I think half of the loss is due to the charter flights expenditure. There is rumour that it costs about $20m annually. It is half of the loss this season. Charter flights are new. W teams travel by team bus before and now they travel via charter flights. They spend in luxury service when W is still in deficit finance.

To protect and grow the value of the media deal, the NBA needs to step in and install a professional management team. The WNBA is on the verge of fostering a hostile workplace and violating equal opportunity employment, and the indications of undisclosed civil litigation. It is unclear how the fiscal aspects are.

Until we get the audited financial for the WNBA, we will not know what the actual loss is. This estimated $40M loss could be after a payment of $50M to the owners, currently 42% WNBA, 42% NBA, 16% Other.
@robertstanford1778

You aren't factoring in additional expenses for travel, hotels, two new teams payrolls, front office salaries, coaches salaries, medical staff, marketing teams, security, etc., etc. Where do you get the 300K number from? If they are losing 40 million from 12 teams, that's over 3 million a year per team. 140(200 - 60 ) million per year from the TV deal will only give each team 10 million of additional revenue. Triple salary cap to 3 million that leaves 7, not accounting for all the additional benefits the players are asking for, such as daycare, pensions, increased per diems etc. That 7 million will be eaten up pretty fast. Doesn't leave much to pay back the 300 - 400 million the NBA has already invested. I think your math could use some work Mick.

Companies will run at a loss if there is growth. Losing money is ok if your market share is growing. The issue with the WNBA is market share has shrunk over the last 20-25 years. Even with recent growth it is still not at 1998 levels. And the way WNBA is committed to chasing away fans there is no guarantee of growth next season. Anyways this is saber rattling. Players threatening a walk out due to low wages, management threatening a walkout due to losing money. Who knows who is right, there literally has never been a more screwed up league than the WNBA, business wise and image wise.

Then why not reliease the actual numbers if teams are skyrocketing in value? Normally when companies are doing well, they want their numbers to be public for prestigious purposes. They are making 140 million extra when the TV deal comes through. Basically 10 million profit per team compared to this year's 3 million loss. Owners are now making the first step to cry so they don't need to pay under a new contract. They could pay roughly 7x current pay and break even.

Maybe owners creating stories of loss because they know they will be going into player pay negotiations with the W soon - laying the ground work so they can cry poor. It may be a good thing Unrivaled is starting this year. They'll have 2 years to get that up and running smoothly and if the CBA doesn't go as planned the players will have an already established US league to expand and possibly step away from the WNBA. They could probably easily transition it to a 5 vs 5 league and also move the schedule to the summer months if need be. I think the girls of the W will always suffer if under the thumb of the NBA. Time to move on if they don't get what they want in the CBA
