I’ve seen Emoni Bates in person when you played against my school (Bradley University). We whooped the shit outta that team. He played in the worst conference in college basketball and averaged 19 points shooting barely 40% from the FIELD. Not only that, Noah Farrakhan was your second best on the team. Real basketball fans know about Noah Farrakhan. This should have a cake walk season for Emoni Bates. If his team won the conference and made the tournament while putting up good numbers. He probably would have been a 1st Round based on media. But, he averaged 19 points barely shooting 40% from the FIELD and his team was the second worst in the conference. Plus the Kent State the winner of that conference, lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament badly. Me personally, if I was a GM, I’m not drafting Emoni Bates at all.

I’m calling it right now once Emoni gets the right mentorship and has that “winning basketball” mentality and knowledge in a couple years I’m gonna be laughing at the people who doubted him and the teams that passed on him and counted him out.

In general I think you make great content, but I feel like I need to push back on the idea that "making Jokic be the superstar" or "making Jokic be the scorer" is a winning strategy for opposing teams. The reason Jokic occasionally had games with fewer assists and more points is because his teammates were not making shots (hence fewer assists) and after being patient and trying to spread the ball around Jokic was forced to take over the scoring out of desperation. I legitimately think that Jokic becoming a scorer is a reflection of his team having an off night (and him never having one) rather than as a result of strategy by the opposing team or the Nuggets/Jokic.

I think Emoni going to the Cavs might be the best thing that could've happened for his career. With Garland and Mitchell being the primary ball handlers it takes a lot of the pressure off of Bates. Not to mention the double teams they demand when driving the ball to the rim. He'll be best utilized as a spot up shooter and cutter in space behind the pick and roll. He won't be asked to come in and run the offense. With Mobley and Allen down low, they'll help if any SF's try to bully him down on the baseline or near the block. All the Cavs will need him to do is score when their offense gets stagnant. If that means coming off the bench to start the year that's fine. Cavs have several other wing players that can be switched in to play defense and wear down the other teams wings. Not saying he's gonna be the next big thing.... But I think he's a serviceable wing that has the potential to be a solid starter in the league in a few years.... Getting a serviceable starter late in the second round would definitely be considered a steal. Also let's not act like him going to Memphis when he was 16 going on 17 was what exposed him. Dude spent 2 years in college just to be old enough to get drafted. He could have done things differently for sure. Could have went to Overtime Elite or played in the G-league... clearly both those options mean more to owners and general in managers.... both woulda likely helped him more than playing college ball. Especially at Eastern Michigan. The gun charges also didn't help. I'd like to think he's grown from his decisions and will improve going forward. Cavs owner being a Michigan guy like Bates will hopefully be able to get through to him and help the Cavs take his game to the next level.

You got it all backwards. The Nuggets didn't play poorly because Jokic was scoring a lot. It was not, "You can kind of lock in on him and take everybody else out of the game." That is silly. How can ignoring everybody else take them out of the game? Jokic scored a lot because none of the other options were working. He is the one constant. When all else fails, give him the ball in the low post. Meaning, he only got the ball when the TEAM was playing poorly. When they were behind in a game.

I love Matt's video and he's not wrong but I do feel like he's oversimplifying the Emoni situation. He uses the trigger word winning basketball. I hear what you are saying but i don't think you are presenting facts and evidence. BUT, you have a valid point within your opinion that i agree with. I remember the Pistons had Adrain Dantley and he was a Black Hole on offense. Once he got the ball everyone stop moving and more than that all the energy of the whole team changed. Because he would all most NEVER pass the ball once he got it. And he would pound the ball and the shot clock would be under 5 before he made a move. But then they traded him for Mark Aguire and put Mark on the bench and started rodman. Then all of a sudden other players started to develop.. Joe Dumars.. Vinnie the Microwave got more shots.. James edwards... the entire team dynamic totally changed and they went on a run of dominating play focused on defense and team oriented offense. .... so I 100% agree with your opinion on players like Adrain Dantley , Carmelo Anthony... they are so ball dominate the development of the rest of your players simply stops and the team game is out the window. However, Emoni Bates is young. And if I had to bet the Cavs drafted him with a specific role that he can perform and still be himself. And that is NOT be a ball dominate player. But the aim to be himself with what he does best catch and shoot.... stand on the wing and knock down shots when Mitchell and Garland are doing their thing. ... And keep the ball moving. You maybe right in he may not be able to do that. I am just saying you have to have a team that can be set up to attempt that. At least we aren't talking about a 9 or 10 year veteran stuck in their ways unable to change. This guy age wise should have been a freshman in college LAST year. He literally should have been in high school is freshman year at Memphis. He is literally 19 years old... my guess is he isn't playing for a few years anyway. And in that time IF i am a organization that drafts him... I am drafting with the floor expectation of "play defense and shoot the open shot" 3 and D guy. ... not a ball dominating Adrain Dantley type player.... he is completely suited for being a 3 and D guy. And he is SO young there is time to crave a role into his identity as a pro...... Like even in practice bench him if he is going iso ala Carmelo Anthony Adrain Dantley style. I can't see a 19 year old drafted in the late second round with his skill set doing anything else. Minute he starts dribbling the air out of the ball he is a bust..... if the ball keeps moving and he is catching and shooting... and playing D... then yes he could be a high level player.

Think about this. Bates won high school player of the year as a sophomore. Just to make that scarier, when he was a sophomore Paulo Banchero, Chet Holmgren and Jabari Smith, the top three picks in last years draft were juniors and Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green and Evan Mobley, the top three picks in the draft before were seniors. And he beat them all in spite of being 15 when the school year started 🤯It's crazy how far he's fallen.

As a Cavs fan I am ecstatic with this pick; personally I don’t see the risk at all at that spot in the draft. We need scoring badly, we have enough defensive first players already on the roster with the style JB employs. We even have a few that are AFRAID to pull the trigger. I think he fits into the Cavs situation nicely, we will see how it unfolds from here! But man oh man so many people are acting like Bates is either LeBron or Kwami Brown. There is a world he’s just an average scorer off the bench and that’s perfectly fine for certain teams. Cavs don’t need another back up center, or draft rights to some kid in Lithuania that may or may not ever come to the NBA… aka Isiah Mobley & Khalifa Diop. I would argue that they contribute even less to winning basketball. At least with Bates you got a chance at some production yanno? And if he’s ass, or a trouble maker then you cut him. But I think people are saying it’s a huge steal because of the POTENTIAL upside vs what you’d typically get at that spot. I don’t think it’s so much that everyone thinks he’s godly or that NBA teams were stupid for not drafting him higher; people just feel he might produce at a spot most people just don’t when they get drafted in that range.

Good insite but you forget that the team surrounding him has a great chemistry. And he has a young extremely talented team which he will have to earn his spot nothing is a given with the Cavs because the Charge has starter players for bad teams waiting for their shot. And they like the Cavs players must play lock down Defense to keep their spot. So on a bad team he can be a me first player but on the Cavs he will be cut if he doesn't play team ball. So he was drafted to the ideal team that has great team chemistry and will make him earn his spot.

I agree with you for the most part. The Joker evaluation was horrible though. The Nuggets barely lost games in the playoffs, so those games that Joker popped off and they ended up losing was more coincidence than pattern. He was getting his points through the normal flow of their offense. His pop off games isn't compared to someone like James Harden where they basically isolate him and he shoots 40 shots on bad fg%. Let not even get into the Kobe comparison. Kobe was a scorer, yes, but he was also an all nba defender. He would also get double digits assist or 15 rebounds if it meant winning games. You are just dumb if you think 5 rings is not winning basketball lolz.
