You definitely called it. I'm a little surprised that Adam Silver is taking a page out of Rob Manfred's playbook, but the Benson family doesn't exactly have a lot of options. Short of building a new arena in, say, Jefferson Parish, the Pelicans might be on the verge of being relocated out of Louisiana. Because where are you going to put a new arena in New Orleans proper? I don't think New Orleans, or for that matter, the state of Louisiana, are overly interested in investing in Smoothie King Center when they already have a lot of money invested in the Superdome renovations (so, you can forget about having the Pelicans playing there while a new arena is being built). As for the Superdome, they already added a limited ticketed standing room section in at least one of the corners of the main concourse; just imagine how nice the rest of the arena would look.

I imagine there are a few relocation options. I’d rule out Vegas and Seattle- the league wants those cities as expansions because they have the money for it. These are the expansion options imo: - Louisville - well known for basketball, can fill the arena, and have a very nice arena for it being for a college team. Considering they’d be the only team, they would not have to compete for sponsorships and the city is likely to contribute more money into the team to keep them. - Raleigh - While there is the Charlotte Hornets, the Raleigh/Durham market has long supported basketball first and foremost. In fact, in the 2021-22 season, across the national NBA games, Raleigh-Durham was the 4th best market, even ranking above Los Angeles. Additionally, there is lots of corporate presence due to RTP, and have an NBA ready arena (PNC Arena). The arena isn’t bad, but is expected to receive a $250M arena renovation starting next summer, with 2 sport books on site as the state has now approved sports betting. Canes also bringing in lots of fans per game and has the NHL’s quickest outdoor game to sellout record & record merchandise sales. - Pittsburgh - Well known for its successful sports programs, where most of which draw great attendance. They have an NBA-ready arena and is a great basketball market. - St Louis - NBA Ready arena and this would fill a gap in that part of the country. The Blues and Cardinals have drawn very well in terms of attendance for the past few years, despite missing the playoffs recently. All of its teams have been relatively successful and are on the more valuable side in their respective leagues. - Kansas City - NBA ready arena (but the city might not be open to it anymore). Chiefs players are more than willing to support any NBA or NHL team coming to the city and have expressed desire for one. This will bring more people to watch those games and especially with the chiefs being highly valued, could bring some $$$ - Montreal - NBA ready arena. Very large market that has sold out almost every single NHL game since the early 2000s (while having the largest arena in the NHL). Would be great for introducing new people to the sport and could grow the game more. - Vancouver - NBA ready arena. Canada doesn’t have any teams on the western side and would be huge for introducing those new fans to the sport. Vancouver would bring tons of sponsorships and the Canucks are VERY valuable.

Relocate them. Do New Orleans residents even like the Pelicans? Seems like they only care about the Saints, there are several better potential NBA cities.

@@Brian00007 Will then they sign family man players, religious like players and players who don't party and are serious about their job on the court and winning and obviously that are willing to play there and not in a huge market. Sacramento/ OKC and Utah have been doing it for years. These teams still will draft great players too. If Kentucky got a team, I don't think it would be like how it was in Vancouver and I can see a few free agents that are from the south wanting to come home, especially former Kentucky players lol 😂

I have a simple solution to this: Move the Pelicans to Seattle & re brand them as the Sonics. We already have the arena in Climate Pledge Arena & there is a large demand locally for the Sonics to return. I agree with Ginger that renovating Smoothie King Center is a bad idea.

I’ll just say the Pelicans Arena is by far the worst arena I’ve ever been to. I never went back. It was very hard to see the court action from the second story. Granted this was the second year they moved to New Orleans and maybe changes have been made, but it was a downright awful fan experience. Gayle is too much of a tightwad to invest on her own and the city’s horrible leadership has bankrupted itself long ago and is still digging the hole deeper. I doubt the city puts much money on the table. I miss Tom Benson.

Get out of New Orleans. The area might not even be habitable in 100 years. Move the Pelicans to Louisville, change the team name, and move them to the Eastern Conference. Add expansion teams in Vegas and Seattle. This way you'll have an even 16 teams per conference. Then either have 4 divisions of 4 teams per conference (like the NFL) or have 2 divisions of 8 teams (kinda like the NHL). This is the way.

New Orleans to Montréal the most sense. Then you have Vancouver in Canada and Calgary for expansion. Only question would be is would the NBA want to do with expansion the same time as the pelicans relocation or beforehand. If the Pelicans have to move it would be to Montréal, Québéc Canada which have Place Bell Centre that would be converted into a NBA size stadium where the Pelicans and the NBA would have a Canadian rivalry with the Toronto Raptors in the NBA

it just doesnt make sense to keep the pelicans in new orleans even if they get the money pooled together due to the insane insurance costs, the declining population and the increase in poverty. it is one of the worst cities in the usa to live in and also more or less is dependent on tourism. 1 bad hurricane can spell doom for the economy and their tourism cash that they bring in. it is not a smart place to invest 1 billion into. plus louisiana is a football town. basketball probably doesnt even beat out baseball in that state either. i think an austin relocation is best mainly due to the proximity in the division plus they need a team there badly. i really like lousiville a lot but unless they can delay the move until seattle and vegas get beought in simultaneously, then a move to austin seems like the quicker and easier solution to keep the southwest division intact. if they do move to austin and we get vegas and seattle in 2025 or 2026, then the nba can just relocate minnesota into the eastern conference.
