I was reading a comment saying ,if it wasn't for Bird the Chief wouldn't have gotten his three rings. Basketball is a team sport. People think that one player wins a game all by themselves. Larry would tell you, if it wasn't for his teammates he wouldn't have won a single championship.

True BUT you can’t deny that in his rookie year with the Celtics, Larry singlehandedly turned that franchise around & made them a winning team again. It’s obvious when you compare performances without Larry vs. WITH Larry.

Yes! That's one of my what ifs for 1987 alone! Shouldve been: 1. First back-to-back champs 2. 4 celtic rings vs 4 laker rings rather than 3 vs 5 3. Another ring won against Magic's lakers !!

Love this man! But this 'Big Three' thing bugs me a little; to me, Denis Johnson was the pure peer of Robert and Kevin. And so many others key players who were there for some years, or whose prominence fluctuated over the '80s (If I started naming them I couldn't stop).

@pbasswil

@@whatubeaccount1 Yeah, and I think that was because DJ (who could've been The Star on many teams) embraced his supporting role with Bird, and was always exactly where he was needed, at the right time. But it's Bird's personality quirk that he was so willing to name one 'Best' team mate, when Kevin, Robert, and DJ were _each_ so very special. Some folks would've been a little more sensitive and diplomatic, but Bird was Bird.

@@pbasswil I was lucky in that I had season tickets behind the Boston bench. To me, the most fascinating guy to watch was DJ - he almost always knew exactly what Bird was going to do next and got himself into the right place to get the ball to him. Massively underrated player, with insanely fast hands. Sad that he didn't get into the HOF while he was still alive and could have been personally given the limelight that he deserved.

Definitely one of the greatest. But the greatest is forever debatable. Too many teams to list but the 1985 Los Angeles Lakers and the 1983 Philadelphia 76'ers were just as good as any of the Celtics teams of the eighties. Good day...

Parish obviously knows he has 3 rings and is in the HOF cuz of Larry Bird, but he almost must pray to the statue of Red Auerbach for orchestrating the steal of getting him out of Golden State and getting Mchale in the same year.

Bird was by far the best player in the league during the early 80s ( I was 76ers fan at the time and always denied/hated that he was better than Dr. J). He lifted his squad like very few ever but Parish owes nothing to anyone for being a hall of famer. Lots of players who played with Bird are not in the hall. Hail Chief on a great career...
