I played sax in the studio session for this back in August of 1974. It was in a tiny studio on the 33rd floor of Rockefeller Center.

Love it. Brings back great memories of my youth. Sadly those days are gone because the networks now would never allow an opening like that because it would waste their precious commercial time.

Growing up in the 70's watching AFC football on NBC was nothing short of pure Heaven. Because of the personalities of the NBC broadcasters and the dynamics of the "NBC Sports" programming, CBS was a far distant second with it's laid back easy going style with Pat Summerall, with all due respect to Mr. Summerall.

Baltimoreshop...I totally agree. Dick Enberg & Merlin Olsen were the best in my opinion. Charlie Jones & Len Dawson and Jones with Bob Trumpy tie for close second. Enberg brought energy from the booth to the viewers at home. As a Redskins fan growing up in Virginia I was hooked on CBS with Pat Summerall & Tom Brookshire and later John Madden. Vince Scully & George Allen were the #2 broadcast team. Don Criquie was one of very few who worked both networks. In the end I always preferred watching NBC's games simply because their personalities were a little more entertaining.

I almost to a theme like the 70s version better than the versions today for every sport. This is fantastic and so is the NBC Wimbledon theme of this era, NBC college hoops, CBS NFL Today theme and and on. They just crrated such a sense of excitement and anticipation

Remember back the '70s NBC would show a lot of the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers games. CBS would run Dallas Cowboys or Los Angeles Rams games a lot, too. This brings back a lot of nostalgia for me...love those old classic San Diego Chargers white helmets with the numbers on them like they do now. Sam Cunningham rushing against the Dolphins. Jake Scott and Manny Fernandez in the Dolphin locker room (shoulder pad sequence), and so much more. To bring those days back again...

Wow this is great. For me the I remember most is that NBC usually did AFC games so my father who was a Dolphins fan usually had a interest in those games. Plus they seemed to usually be later in the afternoon so people were settling in from church.

Until the late 1970's, sports at NBC were part of NBC News. This will explain the "teletype" sound a couple of times in this theme song and why in the video, the phrases "NBC Sports" and "NFL Football" were in the same font type as the title "NBC Nightly News" during years from 1972 through 1975. Indeed, if you found a tape or kinescope of an NBC sports telecast until the late 1970's, it would end with the final graphic in the closing credits noting that "This has been a Sports Production of NBC News". NBC was the last network to make sports a separate division. ABC was first around 1961; CBS did so mid-decade.

I used to go CRAZY over this song while playing cornerback & safety for Deering High School in Portland Maine. There always used to be a Thanksgiving Day game between Portland and Deering High Schools. Somehow Portland High used to beat Deering. We had a great team when I played. It was time for the Deering Jinx to come to an end!!!!! My mother went to Deering high school and my girlfriend Debbie was a cheerleader there. I had so much DETERMINATION to show my girlfriend and my mother I could Play just as good as anyone on that team!!! It was snowing that day and I never wore cleats in the snow. On my helmet, my teammates put Road Runner decals on each side of my helmet. I was the smallest and quickest on the team. Before we took to the field we had a great opening show put on by the cheerleaders and I was so impressed by my girlfriend's performance!!! Then it was my turn to show my talent & speed. The loudspeakers played Rock & Roll Part 2. the game got underway and Portland High School took a 14 point lead. My coach had me playing right cornerback. My family was cheering as I went on the field then I heard this song on the loudspeakers. I SCREAMED as LOUD as I COULD!!! My coach ran up to my mother and asked why I screamed so LOUD!!! My mother replied, " He is LOSING his MIND"!!! My energy LEVEL went "NUCLEAR"!!!!! The next play I intercepted Portland's quarterback & scored to put our team on the board!!! Then I sacked their quarterback to give our team excellent field position. I Intercepted Portland's quarterback 6 times!!!! I scored 4 of the 6 times!!! My Coach had me play wide receiver and none of the defensive backs for Portland could cover me!!! Needless to say, we blew the Portland High team AWAY!!! When the game was over I was Still riding a MAGNUM ENERGY RUSH!!! I had tears in my eyes from SHEER DETERMINATION!!! My mother and girlfriend held me with tears in their eyes!!! My Coach hugged me and kissed me!!! He told me " I wasn't sure you could play but you showed me what DETERMINATION is all about" He then said " SON you EARNED your spot on this team and MORE"!!! Maybe hearing this song before a PATRIOTS game just made me play that much harder!!! All I know is my mother and my girlfriend were MORE than PROUD of me!!!!! Maybe playing in a snowstorm made the challenge even bigger for me!!! That Thanksgiving day was MAGIC for me!!!! My mother told my coach " now you know why my son's nickname is Road Runner!!!! I wore track shoes that had a tread like a snow tire!!! I could get better acceleration and move quicker because my sneakers had no weight to them!!! My teammates used to put a towel over my head when I was on the bench because when they took the towel off my head it was like they unleashed a RABID DOG!!!!! with the bite of an ALLIGATOR!!!

Baltimorehop don't think so.. this is a compilation of the opening theme that was normally used for the opening of the broadcast and at :19 is spliced with the end theme to create this "alternate theme". You can tell the video doesn't quite match the audio splicing. Nice theme nonetheless.
