Colonel Doug Douds USMC (Ret) presented at the National Civil War Museum on November 3, 2018. This video presentation walks through the Marines Corps’ roles and responsibilities via snapshots of its Harpers Ferry, First Bull Run, Drewry’s Bluff, sea duty, and war’s end activities. It will also briefly talk about the U.S. Marine Corps’ organization at the start of the war, its modest growth, eventual decline, and the creation of the Confederate Marine Corps. Finally, it will address the war’s implications for the Marine Corps then and now. Altogether, it is a whirlwind tour that will attempt to capture the Corps’ tenor at a unique moment in its and the nation’s history.
