NDHS SFS19
New Design High School’s annual sustainable fashion May 2019 in the Lower East Side alongside fellow panelists Becca McCharen-Tran of Chromat and Beckett Fog and Piotrek Panszczyk of Area.
It wasn’t until 2010 that Julie Zenobi, now New Design’s Facilitator of Design Education, inaugurated the program. “At the time, they were just using newspaper,” McHayle says of the sustainable competition’s origins. “As their work became elevated, Zenobi expanded their options by reusing unconventional materials like mandarin orange packaging from the lunch room, old-school wallpaper, shower curtains, and recycled jewelry.” It not only allows students the opportunity to work with unexpected raw material and textiles-it also makes them think on a global scale. “It gives students a perspective into the huge environmental and social impact fashion has on the world,” says Zenobi. “These young designers will lead our future and must find sustainable solutions.” - (RACHEL HAHN, VOGUE)
