Simon and Garfunkel, they literally quit music because their debut didn’t sell. Came back because someone released their track Sound Of Silence with overdub instruments. The single did very well, so they came back to music. I mean, I think we could mention The Beatles because how huge they became but they literally had no interest from the US because Capitol US wouldn’t take their music, along with other big labels. Leaving very small labels Vee Jay and Swan to release singles, yet they still had very little attention, selling a few hundred copies of singles, thanks to some college radio stations playing a song or too, to very slow success. It wasn’t until Capitol US finally released their music with I Want To Hold Your Hand at the end of 1963, leading to the First US debut LP Meet The Beatles and their Ed Sullivan appearance. The Beatles were huge in the US in 1964, but in 1963 they were nothing to the US. Lots of books and documentaries leave out this little detail. The Beatles were nearly unpublished in the US. There is actually a photo of George Harrison walking the streets of New York(visiting his sister) without any sort of attention whatsoever. This was around September 1963, That would be the last time a Beatle could live life as a normal human. The complete opposite would occur by February 1964.

I was thinking Simon & Garfunkel’s first album would be here also. It sold poorly, they broke up, and Paul Simon moved to England. Producer Tom Wilson had just recorded Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” and decided to try to give the first album’s acoustic “Sound of Silence” a similar electric treatment, having musicians overdub all the parts. This was done without either Simon’s or Garfunkel’s knowledge. Paul Simon first heard the new version on the radio in England, and the two had an instant hit single.

Arguably, Bowie never completely left theatre arts, with a notable stage performance as Joseph Merrick in "The Elephant Man", as well as notable film acting roles in "The Man Who Fell To Earth", "Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence", "Labyrinth", "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me", "The Prestige", and numerous cameo roles. Rush didn't really take off until their fourth album. They had the self titled album, Fly By Night, and Caress of Steel. They jokingly called the Caress of Steel tour the "Down the Tubes Tour." Their record label wanting the next album to be mainstream with shorter, radio hit songs and said it was their last chance. Rush decided to go out with a bang and record the concept album 2112. I've always heard that Supertramp's first two albums (I think they were the ones funded by the rich Dutch guy) were disappointments before they honed their sound and became massively successful. Alice Cooper's first two albums (produced by Frank Zappa and released on his label) were too "out there" to be successful and it wasn't until they made their sound more commercially viable that they found success on another label (apparently much to Frank's chagrin).

If Alice Cooper and his original bandmates had stayed closer to their musical, conceptual themes and less-polished sound, they likely never wouldve become the runaway yet controversial acts of the early-to-mid 70's and then Alice deciding to go solo, and amp up on the wild, stage-show theatrics that began to wear thin with some of his original bandmates by 1974 and what sort of led to the band's demise, by 1975.

Elton John's debut LP 'Empty Sky' was ignored in Britain and his self-titled second album barely rescued his contract with DJM in Britain. Then the Black Album (as the second Elton John LP is sometimes called) was released in the States and that was his big breakthrough. Cream's debut LP 'Fresh Cream' is a great record and it peaked at number six in the U.K. but only reached number 39 in the U.S. Americans were like, "Clapton is WHO?" The 'Disraeli Gears' album broke Cream through in America. 'Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.' and 'The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle' from Bruce Springsteen didn't exactly set the world on fire, though Manfred Mann's Earth Band seemingly covered half the songs on the former LP. Then 'Born to Run' came out and the rest is history.

The Moody Blues “The Magnificent Moodies.” Not really career destroying but was way different than their next break-through album “Days of Future Passed.”
@davidroberts7282
11 ай бұрын
It took "Knights in White Satin" being re-released nearly 6 years later and to a new, progressive-minded music generation before it became a huge hit. Music fans and even fans of the Moodies like to claim, "Knights" is a pure, progressive rock track. Ive always taken a bit of a contrarian view: honestly, in some respects, it doesn't sound like a 20th century song, at all. Its comes across like a hauntingly beautiful, medieval English folk ballad that was recorded by a group of minstrels deep in some West Country forest centuries ago while watching English and French knights leave their ancestral castles and homes to fight in the Crusades or the Hundred Years' War. A lot of late 60's "psychedelic" songs from British bands come across as very whimsical, folky, ethereal, surrealistic and otherworldly like Donovan, Marc Bolin, Yardbirds, even some Beatles and Stones songs whereas American psychedelic songs tended to be harder-edged, louder, longer and faster tempo-based songs and were kind of proto-metal. Some of the first "heavy rock" or heavy metal songs were more accurately acid-rock. In fact, Led Zeppelin for the first couple of years into their existence and maybe by their 3rd or 4th album were viewed as "acid-rock" band. Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused" sounds as trippy as it does heavy.

Journey - Infinity was a groundbreaking and career saving album. Their first three albums were not selling, even though they had a West Coast live performance crowd following. Because they were more instrument playing/jamming albums but lacked the lyrics and vocal content they got when Steve Perry joined in late 1977, their label Columbia Records was going to drop them. When they came out with Infinity in 1978, things really changed drastically for the better for the band. And it wasn't until 1981, when the Escape album got released, that they became a household name and peaked at their highest point. Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

An album so obscure I've never actually heard it, but it's become legendary: Carole King's "The City" (1968). King had been a huge songwriter with her then-husband Gerry Goffin, but when they broke up she tried for a career as a solo singer-songwriter but didn't hit big until her third album, "Tapestry." Also, one reason Billy Joel's "Cold Spring Harbor" flopped was because it was made for Ampex, a maker of tape recorders which took an ill-advised flyer into making records in the early 1970's. And I love David Bowie's early stuff even though some of the arrangements British Decca saddled him with were really overdone.

Ah yes, the opposite of the "sophomore slump." I thought all 10 choices were spot-on; you even branched out into some genres that most people might not have considered (Britpop, '90s East Coast rap) but which are pretty textbook examples of the phenomenon. Someone else mentioned Elton John's Empty Sky, which I might put in 11th place: it's fine, it's pleasant, but who at the time would have heard it and thought, "Jesus Christ, this guy is going to fill Dodger Stadium someday"? Sort of a related category is "Albums That Aren't Debuts But Everyone Thinks They Are." Even I often find myself thinking, "Transformer, man, what a great way to follow up Loaded! Wait a second ... oh yeah, there was that ... other thing, with the mopey-looking bird on the cover."

Elton John's first album, Empty Sky, was a commercial flop, not even getting released in the U.S. until a few years later. It didn't sound anything like his later, more familiar stuff.

Deep purple and Pink Floyds early albums were nothing like what they would become famous for. Shades of Deep purple had the hit song Hush on it. Their first three albums were more psych 60s pop. Even the first album with the mk 2 lineup with group and orchestra was considered a flop. Wasnt until in rock was released in 1970 where they got their heavy sound. Pink Floyds first 4 or 5 albums werent commercial and very out there. They had a cult following. They didnt release anything remotely mainstream until Meddle (by floyds standards) in 1971. Had 2 soundtrack albums more and obscured by clouds

This is correct about Deep Purple but wrong about Pink Floyd, their first album may not have been a commercial success but by the time it was released they already were an established and influential band in the London scene

McCartney 1, ram & wildlife for Paul McCartney didn't do well at all when they released causing people to question pauls songwriting and status as an artist, it wasn't until the success of the "live and let die" single & band on the run that paul showed he could be a solo artist

Supertramp, Renaissance ( great albuns, though) . On the other hand there are bands that first album is way the best of their career , like America , Jefferson Airplane and Iron Butterfly. And NO, KC and LZ firsts are not their best, it´s only your tastes

As a huge Bowie fan, that debut was very questionable. Very silly album but some of the songs were absolutely atrocious such as “Please Mr. Gravedigger” I do love “love you till Tuesday” and “rubber band” though

The scorpions first album lonesome crow was more psychedelic and was unnoticed. Especially in the US. I think they actually broke up after it was released but reformed with a different line up. Most of the Scorpions early releases that contained Uli jon Roth went unnoticed in the USA until they become popular in the 1980s. I personally prefer the Uli jon Roth era better myself.

Well, you gotta at least like We Are Hungry Men. Silly Boy Blue, and Please Mister Gravedigger from the Bowie's debute! Now if one doesn't like THOSE three songs then, as far as I'm concerned, they're in CRITICAL need of a taste transplant!

Bowie was going through his Anthony Newly phase when he recorded his first album for Deram. Actually, if you look at his career in the 60’s he basically tried anything to get success. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but that first album is complete crap. It’s kind of like The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles, and Fripp, also in Deram, which soundtrack sound like the music from an old 60s BBC sitcom .

Tony Bakes? 😂 Anyway, the sad thing is that, today, there are no second chances. You either hit it big with your very first single, or you're out for good. And even if you make it, one unsuccessful release, and you're out. And it's all thanks to the Internet...
@blunderr6113

Where on earth did you get this idea lol The internet has literally made it so you don't need a record label, and thus can keep releasing music even if the first stuff flops When you needed a record label, if the first single flopped, they'd ditch you It's actually better now
