For the neck humbucker position, you could also try a humbucker-sized P90. A cool option is the Tonerider Rebel90, it's significantly cheaper than SD or Dimarzio but offers very good tones. And since it's a P90, it'll have more brightness and spank than a regular humbucker.

I'm a huge Seymour Duncan fan, but those Tonerider pickups are awesome! I bought a R90 for the bridge position and liked it so much I bought a neck R90 too. I putting them in my Carvin USA Custom Shop guitar. ;)

I was literally about to toss my amp because I thought the clean channel was bad. It was clipping when I used the neck pickup and got worse as I raised the gain. This video helped me realize the neck pickup was too high. Perfect fix. Thanks!

Try flipping the neck humbucker around. You will get a more mid sound and feel. Your lower string get warmer while the top string get more glassy and cleaner

In my case (Suhr Doug Aldrich neck humbucker in ash American Standard Telecaster) the sound was significantly improved simply by adding overdrive pedal before tube preamp. No bassy dull, just great roaring with slight telecaster intonation.

Yep! Adding eq pedals or overdrives can also help cleaning up the frequencies of your guitar. Good tip!

Yet another trick, have done today - to solder neck humbucker not opposite-serial but parallel. Yes, the signal has become weaker, but that muffling-bumbling wanished too!

Hi, Check the Material of you pickup Covers. Crome covered brass will eliminate higher frequencies. Rather use those made of German Silver. Less cost but you need to know how to do.

I don't want to contradict but it's the opposite. The closer the pickup is to the strings, the sound is much clearer.

You definitely lose low end the more you get away from the strings. And too much low end is more mud in my experience. But you also Lose some highs thats right.

@@Gaslight.Guitar i've heard a lot that mud is too much bass. but i guess if people are targeting different things, they'd go for diff settings.... for me it's a nice little '99 HAMER, sounds pretty good, Duncan Designed pickups. but they sound more muddy than i think they are supposed to. it's most noticeable on distortion but compared to another guitar, the cleans aren't as clear and bright either (like next to a little Gretsch Streamliner). i'd definitely like more articulation on the distorted end of things, for some metal (playing a bit of metallica, and it would be nice to clearly hear notes change versus the muddy sound changes). someone told me that the mud is due to the guitar not being set up. but i'd like to know what things to adjust. ($60 is crazy for a setup for me right now, especially since you don't know that the tech is good or not. had a bad exp just yesterday. it's like haircuts... worth the money when it's more advanced AND the person is good. waste of money when they are just ok or suck, and you could do it yourself. anyway, i'd like to learn all this anyway. luthier stuff, setups, adjustments, upgrades is very interesting to me.) tnx for any ideas!

The Higher ( closer to strings ) the pickup , the * Louder * it gets . And the darker and muddier . Lower the body of the pickup , and it becomes clearer , with more high end . For a cliche analogy , the lower the pickup body , the more it sounds like a quasi single coil , albeit with less volume . I've been going thru this with my H-H lap steel . Dropped the pickup all the way down , and barely had output . Then slowly raise back up just enough . Then adjust the pole piece screws . For these , the higher ( closer to strings) , the more clarity and high end . It was a huge improvement , enough to be usable , but still short of enough Twang . Then had lightbulb moment , and added the secret weapon . A basic. 7 band EQ pedal . bump up the top two sliders a lot , small cut on lower freqs , and it's pretty close , for $23 .

If you mean the main body of the pickup , closer to strings is Louder . And darker And muddy er . Lowering the main body will make it clearer , more note separation, and more highs. If you mean the pole pieces ( the screw looking things on the top of the pickup) , then yes , Raising them gives clearer and more highs .

Try turning the pickup around, in order to move the pole pieces closer to the bridge.
