The Akatarawa forest is home to some of our most valued native species, including some very special giant rātā which are believed to predate human settlement.
This ‘old growth’ forest is also now home to a number of introduced species who threaten its very existence. Recently, I went hiked into the Akatarawa forest to assess one of the oldest rātā trees for damage from possums, which threaten their growth and structure.
Regular pest control doesn’t just protect the small and vulnerable, but also the big and mighty. It protects the entire ecosystems that our native taonga species exist and thrive in, and the irreplaceable history and value that they hold.
