Rantasmo takes a break from watching Misfits to explore its predecessor, the racy teen drama Skins, and the problem with having a flawless gay character.
"strength is what makes us likeable, flaws make us interesting" just putting that in my mental notes, it's great advice.

It's been several years since I watched Skins; at the time, the only thing I noticed that bugged me about Maxxie was that he and Anwar never got their own character-centric episodes by themselves, they were always stuck together like a twofer token minority kind of thing.

Very strong points, but I wouldn't go as far to describe Maxxie as "flawless". One of the brief clips you included is a scene where he is initially pursued by a bully, before the bully arbitrarily comes onto him. Maxxie calls him out on how unreasonable this behavior is, but then basically decides, "What the hell," and goes with it. I'd say that's most definitely a flaw, but it's relatable and arguably one of his better moments, as it humanizes him. Overall, Maxxie was one of my favorite characters, if only for the reason that he was amongst the most likable, and yes, definitely attractive.

Good point. Except this character flaw is never explored or brought up again. All the other characters have story arcs related to their flaws and how they overcome them.

Just tossing that out there, Skins didn't decrease in popularity because it's reaching its final season, it decreased in popularity because the third generation of characters were so ridiculously underdeveloped and haphazard that they made very little sense.

I've not watched it, but it sounds like they came up with the storyline first about the muslim-gay friendship, created a gay character for it, then realised they had no character to work with in later series so they had to have him in a passive role.

This is all true but that's also the magic of Maxxie, that he is the most together. He is already out when the show starts, no one really has an issue with it, it's not a depressing matter that puts a cloud on his life and he is just a "normal every day" teenager. Where in most other shows him being gay would be made a massive deal of. Just look at the Skin remake, the first thing they did (apart form making him female) is to have his counterpart struggle with their sexuality and unsure whether they like the same sex or the opposite. So cliched and done to death. I think the fact he is so unremarkable, is what makes him remarkable.

On the other hand, I find that most series simply go over the top with flaws and drama. To be viable, it seems a character nowadays must be orphaned/victim of parental abuse - with a serious medical condition they fail to treat or a substance addict - too poor or too rich - with wrong friends - with someone blackmailing them - with abusive/incompetent/stupid teachers or employers etc. etc. etc. I think series could use a more moderate approach.

The only really big thing that happened to James was a sub-subplot where he got a boyfriend in about six minutes. And that still doesn't count because it was during the stalker storyline.

Great character analysis. I think Maxxie was badly underused in series 2, (probably as a result of the ridiculous over focus on Sid/Michelle/Tony but that's another story). His first episode of series 2 with Tony, and the stalker episode immediately after were both brilliant and the writers missed an open goal not developing him further from this.

Yeah, Maxxie, while likable, was just kind of there as a character, which kind of irritated me when in seasons 3 and 4 when they introduced lesbian characters who actually developed and were treated as more than just window dressing. I thought the show could have benefited from a bit greater focus on Thomas later as well. But I think they were just trying to include all sorts of very complex character development and in doing so, they may have shirked on a few. To their credit though, they did LOADS of awareness with characters like JJ with his autism, Effy's schizophrenia, Cassie's eating disorder and eccentricities, Pandora's joyful demeanor and somewhat neurotic mother, Thomas was an immigrant trying to find a place for his family, Naomi coming to terms with her lesbianism, etc. To some degree, I've known people with all of these issues. So they did cover a wide range, and I applaud them for producing a show which can be equally appealing to teens and adults alike whilst dealing with some heavy subject matter.

Maxxie was easily the sanest character. He had no episode of his own. He was the only one that didnt. The producers who realized this gave Maxxie online episodes. He found a boyfriend, auditioned for the school play and organized a very cute video with Anwar and Chris. None of this makes up for the lack of screen time or his own story.

Although honestly it seems like nowadays among the especially among the pedantic, nitpicking side of Internet criticism you can easily come out feeling that there are some that believed characters shouldn’t HAVE any flaws...like ever, you’re either a Mary Sue or a worthless garbage pile that deserves terrible thing ever in catharsis fics. So I especially applaud the “Our strengths make us strong ,but our flaws make us interesting” speech since most wannabe critics don’t really get the difference between flawed and unlikable characters and basically think you have to be the perfect construct of morality to be a good character

They didn't fix the problem in the second generation of skins. The creators of the show clearly took the fact Maxxie was flawless to heart, because they ended up making the gay couple in the second generation nothing but flawed. They have no real reason to be liked, they cheat on each other for stupid reasons, one of the two is by far one of the most malicious characters I've ever seen on TV.

I think what really needs to be remembered is that Skins is really... a soap opera, with a bit of gritty paint slapped on it. No one is likable in a soap opera because in order to create drama, they have to be horrid to one another. It's just a pretentious EastEnders aimed at teens.

The problem with Maxxie is basically the main problem with female characters in media; at least it's starting to wind down now, it used to be that if a female character was flawed, there would be the feminists screaming MISOGYNY. Eg. Alex from Fatal Attraction.

I think as we develop positive portrayal of gay characters, writers are rightfully concerned about portraying gay characters negatively because that's all gay characters were for a while. Wanna make someone extra evil? Make them gay. The concern is justified because confirmation bias would attribute the flaw to his being gay. Apply any of the flaws of the other characters to Maxxie and that flaw would be attributed to the fact that he was gay. Maxxie had Tony's narcissim? Drug addict? Gay. Anorexic? Gay. awkward and depressed? Gay. In as much as they are boring for a while, it's nice that gay characters get to be the moral authority for a while. Get to be the "nice guy" that everyone likes. And yes, he's some nice eye candy to boot. Maxxie is is a PSA.
