What about #1 & 8? Nicht is going before the adverb in 1 and before the adjective in 9, rather than going at the end. What’s the rule for those situations?

Hi, I would like you to help me understand the following; 1. Negation by putting "nicht" right at the end of the sentence, I have been trying to do this but it very confusing. 2. in the sentence " I have to do my homework", why are the following (positive ) translation to German incorrect " Ich muss meine Hausaufgaben machen" , negative (ich muss nicht meine Hauaufgaben machen).

It is a difference of connotation. If you need to do someone else's homework, but not your own, you could (hypothetically) say "Ich muss nicht meine Hausaufgaben machen, sondern Jimmys." (Side note: technically, you should put "machen" at the end of that sentence, but if feels wrong here.) Obviously, you mean to negate the action "do" instead of the possessive "meine". It is essentially the same difference as "I don't have to do my homework." And "I don't have to do MY homework." Word order is stiff, but inflection is flexible in English.

+Learn German with Herr Antrim 3. Does this mean, if i want to negate the verb i must always put "nicht" at the end of the sentence? Does the nicht at the end of the sentence negate the conjugated verb only? 4. Were my translations in 2 above correct or incorrect? 5. Is " Ich muss nicht..." = ("I must not..."), if this is true it would mean i don't have to negate the verb by putting the verb right at the end?

+RSim Kul 3. Yes. "Nicht" will go as close to the end of the sentence as it can without going after an infinitive or other form of a verb. I can't think of an example of when "nicht" would negate the infinitive of the sentence, so I will say "yes" to the second part as well. 4. Your first translation was fine, but your second one, you should move "nicht" to after "Hausaufgaben". 5. More than likely you need to put the "nicht" closer to the end of the sentence. Ich muss nicht nach Hause gehen. - I don't have to go home. Ich muss nicht jetzt nach Hause gehen. - I don't have to go home now. In both of those sentences, you are negating something other than the verb. In the first, you are negating the destination and in the second, you are negating the time. If you want to say "I don't have to go." you would simply say "Ich muss nicht gehen. I'm not entirely sure that I understood your question, but I hope that helped anyway.

+Learn German with Herr Antrim Just to carry on with negation... Are the following sentences in 6 & 7, equivalent in English (i.e. will they translate to one idea) although different in German in terms of what is being negated? 6. Ich muss zu dem Auto nicht gehen = I do not have to go to the car? 7. Ich muss nicht zu dem Auto gehen = I do not have to go to the car?

Everything was good but why in the 3rd and 2nd sentence the word "nicht" isn't in front of the verb I think you said you have to add it before the verb.
@MrLAntrim

I said it had to be after the verb.
