Still learning about negative harmony myself, but iirc the negative of a dominant seventh chord is a m7b5 chord, which is very similar (the same notes, in fact) to a m6 chord built from the third: D - F - Ab - C (Dm7b5) F - Ab - C - D (Fm6) So it happens that a lot of cadences with a full dominant chord resolving to a minor tonic (V7, in this example G7) are going to be replaced with - not only a minor plagal cadence - but a very Beatlesque ivm6 cadence (or, iim7b5 cadence). That is, G7 - Cm would become Fm6 - C. Can anyone confirm if my thinking is correct?
@althealligator1467
5 ай бұрын
@@GuyDude-hk8uy That's exactly true. Though I think it's worth noting that this isn't just true of what is currently referred to as Negative Harmony, but of symmetry in general: geometrically, the symmetrical image of a shape (in musical terms, a musical structure such as a chord, melody, scale, or even a whole piece) is always the same regardless of where the axis of symmetry is located relative to the shape, albeit in a different position (key or just key of reference) depending on where that axis is. That's just how axial symmetry works, there is always only one image in the absolute for any shape. Negative Harmony is symmetry about a very specific axis which results in the image being diatonic to the parallel minor or parallel major, keys a minor third away from the original key. But as it turns out, the diatonic scale is already symmetrical around the second degree of the ionian mode (D in C major for example), and finding the image of a musical structure around that specific axis will result in that image being diatonic to the same key as that original structure. For example the image of C-G-Am-F, which is I-V-vi-IV in the key of C, about the axis of C (which passes through D and Ab) is Am-Dm-C-Em, which is vi-ii-I-iii also in the key of C; however, the image of that same progression about the axis of D half-flat (which passes through E half-flat and A half-sharp) is Cm-Fm-Eb-Gm, which is _also_ vi-ii-I-iii but this time in the key of Eb (which is the parallel minor of C). That first image was the diatonic image while the second was what's currently called Negative Harmony.
