Neil is a superb musician and a lot of his songs are more aurally-striking than people give him credit for. I think this track and "Dear Dinosaur" are genuinely out-of-this world in terms of how they sound, but people sometimes neglect to mention that because they're fixated on the more "meme-y" elements of his music. "Dear Dinosaur" in particular sounds like a forgotten 60's psychedelic rock song with fantastical but weirdly relatable lyrics.
@demitrischoenwald1436

This is proof of Neil's genius, he's able to make a full song out of the beginning parts of many different songs.
@Komnen0s

That's what I'm sayin'. I don't like classifying Neil as a novelty act because that's underselling his talent. He puts way more effort and thought into his work than most contemporary novelty acts. Lil Dicky and Your Favorite Martian never assembled a big list of disparate samples and combined them together in an ingenious way to create great new songs. I always encourage people to listen to this track as well as "Dear Dinosaur" because they're both 1) creatively, carefully-designed and 2) they sound really damn nice. "Dinosaur" in particular sounds like a forgotten 60's psych rock song about love. The playful, absurd lyrics suit the mellow "Dear Prudence" instrumental perfectly (the line "You feel asleep, I stayed awake / I watched the passing cars" feels a lot more poetic here than in "Walk the Dinosaur").
@moviekid42

Plus the name is The Starting Line. This is the first song of the album, or the album's, "starting line". It's made up of the first, or, "starting", lines of each sampled song. And one of the lines used is, "Reluctantly crouched at the starting line", which features prominently throughout the song. It works on every level.

This makes me appreciate the craft that goes into Neil's music. People always focus on his meme value even though he's a legitimately talented musician. He's good at weaving lots of disparate samples together in order to make new songs. It's always super intricate plus the end result sounds pretty sweet, as is the case here. Also, I had no idea Cake, Andre 3000, and Talking Heads were in this. The sheer amount of detail in Neil's music is incredible.
