Calculus was the first moment of actual enlightenment in my life. I had failed my high school finals for 2 years. I didn't understand shiit, and i refused to understand it as my teachers were busy shoving the formula remembering ScmHIdT into my brain, but my one math teacher told me of a graphical approach. Took me time but and it hit me completely random when I was in the toilet, but understanding the purpose of integral calculus to find out the area under the curve made me a new sense and created a whole new world to me. That was THE REDIFINING moment in my scientific education. 6 years later, I'm a mechanical engineer dealing with car chassis, HVAC for buildings and 3d printing. Sure, i was late to finish the race, and maybe i was a disappointment to most of the ppl around me, but now i know that my scientific and mathematic education will be lifelong. My next step for learning is to apply advanced math through softwares like MATLAB to solve real-life problems and create new designs. Sorry if I seem like a retard y'all. I may be dumb to take so damn long to finish my school and it was damn humiliating, but the the sheer duckn joy of actual understanding, its like weed combined with sunrise at a beach. No humiliation is too high to feel the sheer joy of total assimilation of a concept, to ponder upon its implications.

The best way I learned anything was a from a math teacher at school, it started with algebra, I told him, no I can't do, I don't understand and he said to me, ok, if you don't think you can do it,,, fine,, you limit yourself, be lazy, but don't bother to blame anybody for what you didn't do, and you have to agree with anyone that tells you that you're not capable and will never achieve because you're limiting yourself already, that infuriated me but in a good way to motivate me, I didn't double down on my strengths, I doubled down on my weaknesses and managed to make myself understand things that otherwise, my brain would have looked at it and said, no were not doing that. We are the masters of ourselves and we can do anything as long as we don't limit ourselves.

You hit the hammer on the nail on this one. It's not a question of whether it is possible to learn said skill it's a matter of is said skill worth the investment of my time. If I notice the knowledge gained doesn't equate to the time put in why would I put the time in? You're at the deficit at default by doing so. The wealthiest people on planet didn't start off rich they started with common sense. Know your value and seek knowledge and invest time in what you value. If you're a person like myself who has basic math skills but doesn't like math then why invest more time in math when I can invest more time in English, History and psychology. Or in more realistic terms things that contribute to my passions and meaning on this earth. The most expensive investment on earth is time so you gotta be careful and choose what you spend on wisely.

Because you think you need to have or achieve something to be "good enough" there is no milestone or special skill, you're simply enough. You may be lacking in areas like anyone else, we can always choose to improve. And at the end of the day your value cannot be measured nor quantified by achievement or gained knowledge and skill. your life is precious as is every life and should be not only cherished, but celebrated. you were gifted life and capability to function in this world, live with love, compassion and decency, you will be able to achieve whatever you set out to do if it is meant for you to do. Do not ever think anyone can give you value or take it from you, no one can for we are all equally valuable and equally flawed. What makes us "good enough" lies within ourselves, not without. Love yourself as you would someone you're willing to die for. The person you'd go to the ends of the earth for, care for yourself like that too. I'm not saying put yourself above all other things, I'm saying dont put yourself on the bottom shelf or back burner, if you can put another person before yourself, you can take time to put you first every day. Genuinely love yourself as you are, acknowledge and accept all the good and the bad and recognize the bad does not make you less. It's just homework, we dont like homework but it gets you that good grade, never stop working and never stop loving yourself.

Many people look up to me at work. My many years of experience there (35!) give me the ability to solve most work related problems. However I look up to the people who are better educated or are more forward and decisive than myself. Musicians are a whole other example. I’ve had musical skills for many years and enjoy playing. I played in a band for four years. However there are younger and incredibly talented musicians that I will never compare with. If you’re gonna be good in only one subject at school, let that subject be math because being good in math correlates very highly with a high IQ. Even if one stinks at everything else and is even, say, illiterate, they will most likely do just fine in life anyway because most of life is about problem-solving and reasoning.

In grade school 7th grade back in the early 60s. Kids were not taught algebra. Our teacher was phenomenal. She didn't just throw letters st us to add, subtract, multiply and divide. She taught us how those equations were applied in real life. I went on into high school to become an algebra tutor, to about 25 kids who just couldn't grab the concept. They all passed their classes and understood what they were doing. I myself retired a couple years ago with 3 journeyman skilled trades cards. Millwright, Licensed journeyman Electrician, and Machinist. I helped design and build small assembly machines to end my carrier.

Calc is hard to learn for many. But totally worth it.

This is the truest description of calculus I’ve ever heard. I hated math, and sucked at it, all my life. Finally, after hammering my head against the wall and simply *getting* to calculus, I saw it and wanted to drop out on day one. I stuck it out, and at the end, I enjoyed math for the first time in my life.

Watched a math video on how you can define and accurately predict the inner circumference of a paraboloidal bubble tube by just knowing circumference and height. They always say “Math tells us that XYZ is true” but it’s neat how many concepts can be accurately described with math. I wish my teachers did a better job of relating math to the physical world when I was younger.

I passed three semesters worth of calculus, but don't remember the simplest thing. The interesting thing is that my mental problem solving aptitude is exceptionally high which is why I did so well will other kinds of math, Geometry, Algebra, Trig (practical trig, not the stupid graphs so much). So, the thing with learning calculus is that it relied on rote memorization and learning how to follow a prescribed process, not the same as building one's actual problem solving abilities which maybe come later, but that kind of later was not my career path.

Sometimes it takes a bit to click. Especially in calculus where you have to learn the basics to apply them later. It can be fairly fun at times when you start to figure out how it all works.

Most people who say there bad at math just never had a good teacher help them push through their anxiety instead of making it worse. So many teachers criticize mistakes instead of encouraging what a student got correct and building from there.

It's like standing before a great fog, thick as soup, and declaring you cannot see through it. As you walk through it, your eyes adjust and the mere act of walking through it pushes some away. Then you see more of the ground before you, more of the walls around you and then, as you get further in, the fog dissapates and you are left with a long corridor which you must still walk down, but which is not shrouded by as much fog.

For "visual learners" interested in just dipping their toes into Calculus conceptually, hunt down a copy of _Professor E. McSquared's Calculus Primer._ It's gone through several editions, but the original black and white 1977 one is arguably the most charming, since it kinda looks like something a guy did up in his garage.

i failed algebra in high school for 4 years straight. i ended up barely passing in summer school to graduate. but in culinary school, i had my bakery class before my algebra class. baking is essentially chemistry, involving lots of algebra. i only passed that algebra class because i was given a practical application in baking. it wasnt abstract anymore. everybody learns in different ways.

My experience exactly. I eventually got through two years of calculus, and it became my friend. And it got me through physics. I was a Biochemistry major, tho.
