Been to Staithes a couple of times to take pictures, its very photogenic, its a delightful little place on a nice day whether tide is in or out ( it goes out a long way and leaves the most amazing area to walk on ) But there isn't much there apart from the pub and an arty type shop if I remember correctly. I, along with many others, went to an art festival in Staithes. The people of the village opened up their houses, allowing the artists to exhibit their works. Was an absolute fantastic weekend and an insightful gaze into the present colliding with the recent and more ancient past. Like Neil says, the place is built and every nook and cranny is used to make homes fit higgledy piggledy, an amazing place to walk around. For me, more amazing still is that it isn’t contrived but borne of necessity and not because it looks nice, but beautiful all the same. We have it so easy these days.

Thanks, Neil. I visited that little village when I was much younger way back in '77. Although I was incredibly impressed and enamored by the Yorkshire people, countryside and history, I was still in my school-bred dislike of studying history. My trip was NOT wasted, I loved it immensely, but I missed such an incredible opportunity. You're right about the sights, sounds, fragrances and even the "feel" of the air in places like that.

Been to Middlesbrough, missed Staithes. On the list for the next trip, if only to see where Capt Cook sailed from. My Mum was a Cook and traced her family back to Frances Cook of Yorkshire, who sailed on the Mayflower. His descendant Ephraim was a contemporary of the Captain, and having lost a leg in the French and Indian Wars, was granted land in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where eventually his descendant, Zoe Cook, my Mum was born. Ephraim and Zoe are buried not twenty yards apart in a beautiful spot near Yarmouth. Thanks again Neil for another great letter!

Great episode! I listened while driving first, then watched/listened and enjoyed seeing how much the village matched what I was imagining it to look like. 😊 & Happy belated birthday! 🌟🎆🎉 I love how you often bring up little personal bits that include your wife - it shows how strong your love is! Your willingness to acknowledge your affinity for beauty/judging a book by its cover was relatable, as it was humble. I was slightly surprised to learn that you'd taken a DNA test, considering most of them have fine print where you sign away protections of your data and allow it to be used for, "future technologies," (whatever that might include!?), etc.... But I imagine it's quite tempting for historians not to find out more about their genealogy! I refuse to get a DNA test myself, but my close family members took tests, so I have some ideas to go by... that & an already extensively researched family tree from my grandmother, who was a genealogist, and traced her family back to at least Eleanor d'Aquitaine! She def would have been a fan of yours if she were still alive. 🙏🏼💘

General Sam Houston, Texas Military hero, adopted member of the Cherokee tribe ( he could speak Cherokee, and his 2nd wife was Cherokee) a politician, and statesman, was born in Virginia of Scottish ancestry. Apparently his mother's ancestry was MacDonald of Sleat. His Father was descended from a Knight named Hugh who fought at Agincourt. Afterward, this knights founded "Hugh's town", -- which is why Texans pronounce their largest city "Hugh's -Town" not "House-ton", as the New Yorkers pronounce their Houston Street.
