I'm fascinated after hearing this interview to see how similar .. and almost exact, many of his character traits ... his ideas ... The way he constructs a song .. etc ... etc .... are to my own! As an introvert, one learns through age that He/she is far more fortunate than ever realized in youth. Extroverts don't have these unique skills and abilities. They are too Busy running their mouth socializing .. lol! Most of us go on to achieve a status that would be envied/admired By our HS Student Body Presidents, Homecoming queens, Jocks, etc. ... Neil said at one time that drumming never came naturally for him, he had to work extra hard just to get loose enough to play. In fact, he used to practice for more than an hour before each show just to get fully warmed-up ! And he played "full force" all the time which, in the end, hurt his shoulders, arms and wrists. I just hope that he can still enjoy his well deserved retirement without too much body pains, because he was such an inspiration for me, and probably millions of other drummers too, as a youth. Thanks to George Stroumboulopoulos for being such a great interviewer by asking very pertinent questions and letting his guests talk, without constantly interrupting them.

I agree 100%, but the funny part is how the mainstream music press (which never liked the band to begin with) has always especially despised Neil ever since he had the evil gall to admit he was inspired by Ayn Rand instead of Karl Marx. Part of why he despises press events so much is because he got called a selfish jerk and a Nazi every time he tried to explain his lyrics to anybody without a mind sufficiently large and open enough to appreciate them. Which he rarely found. The Priests of Syrinx are still alive and well.

Along with a number of other people, per the comments below, I too found his revelation of the significance of "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend" to his disposition to introversion. He's not a total introvert of course, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to sit there and speak so eloquently and winsomely. But I understand that he has to often deal with people/fans who adore (in the original meaning of the word, having to do with worship) him, and think of him as somehow "more than human", even godlike, when in fact he is not. And he knows he's not; knows his own weaknesses, doubts, etc. So when one of these adoring fans pour themselves out before Neil, and speak to him as if he actually knows them, fully expecting Neil to respond in kind, they're met with a surprise. It's simply not possible for him, based upon his constitution, to pretend to be happy about it. He shuts down, turns away, and goes to a place of safety. After all, lurking amongst those who truly appreciate his music, are those who of the psychotic stalker type, whose affections are perverted and dangerous. And knowing this, when he finds himself in the presence of such over-the-top drooling, as one person below has mentioned, Neil just might in fact "chuck the finger" at the fan, and bring the delusional worshipper down to earth, with a thud. And so now Neil's a jerk in that person's mind.

my crazy what? signals is their ultimate masterpiece, their police/reggae best. they are more restrained and they sound amazing, some RUSH albums sound thin, signals is full, rich, if they were painters, I would say full strokes and a lush palate. incredible to me that broon left over the album.

I know what you mean... Signals is very special to me. There was a time when I would've called it my favorite of theirs. Now it's gotta be Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.

Type A personality + interview nerves = Red Bull eruptions, I guess. No actual Red Bull involved.

People remark at his drum skills and lyrical skills, but he might well have been the most intelligent and articulate musician of our time.

The man was by far the best drummer and songwriter. Highly intelligent and wrote my favorite RUSH song Red Barchetta

Great interviewer, first time I see him and I like how he got into the nuance of the music and the historical Rush. You can see how engaged is the Professor.

Fantastic interview. Not too much interruption by the host, but those that are there absolutely move the interview in specific directions and only add to the conversation. First rate interview of Neil Peart. And if you've seen many of them, they're not that easy.
