I remember finding this on vhs in the discards and "for free" box at my library. there was no cover but the title on the sticker intrigued me. I went home and popped it in with low expectations. The next two hours I sat mesmerized as if a window to a magical dimension had opened in front of me. The music, the poetry of the dialogue and pacing and cinematography was unlike anything I had ever seen, or truthfully, seen since. This movie is a masterpiece who's mark on my mind will last forever.

This is the greatest film score of the 1990s (at least). I dare say it's difficult to understand why it resonates so much - it wouldn't be inaccurate to say that the melodies are muffled, sparse, repetitive and strange - but somehow it all adds up into one of the most powerful pieces of music ever constructed for cinema.

Every time I listen to this , I hear in my mind the word you just used and that is “reverb”. Reverb is perfect for the film, and therefore perfect for the soundtrack, for which Neil Young could be classified as a “genius”, in the case of this film. The music sounds impending and threatening and makes you feel anxious for the future of the protagonist, as it should. I am commenting on just the soundtrack. The film itself would take a few more paragraphs.

@@corvusthule For anyone who has seen the film , your's is is the greatest comment ever. You know, many have commented about how important tobacco was in this particular Native American tribe , but in the film, the first person who started the conversation of “Do you have have any tobacco “ was a white Anglo-Saxon female ex-prostitute turned paper flower maker girl, who was not thinking about Native American practices. Some times I think it was just a running joke (I know , blasphemy ) from beginning to end. “Do you have any tobacco”? When I first heard this soundtrack, it was like listening to a clinic on how to play solo guitar with a style and finesse that was being taught by a god anointed with the blessings of Jimi Hendrix and Les Paul. Neil Young has demonstrated what six strings can do in a fashion that cuts to the very core of your soul and fills it with a salvation that has been lost for so many years and now has been found. You knew it was missing but you didn't know how much it was missing or that it was gone in the first place until Neil struck that distorted cord and the memories once again filled with carnal desire. Hey, hey, my, my, rock and roll will never die.

Ciao! :-)

I had the same experience. The thing about this film is that every time you see it , you find something new. At first , I thought “This may be some kind of joke”. Then I changed my mind completely. Now , I’m thinking that “yes” there were some inside or outside jokes allowed in probably by the one and only Johnny Depp and I’m not even including the scene with Billy Bob Thornton. And yes, the soundtrack is awesome.

I identified with William Blake when this movie was released in 1995. Now I relate to John Hurt as the accountant.

Nitty Gritty Neil Young's guitar playing truly works for Johnny Depp in nthis film: Dead Man. Love it. Blue-sy and Funky.

Buon ascolto a tutti. Ciao! :-)
