Steve McQueen wanted to marry up, that is to someone who could help his career. He was from the street and she maybe became like a mother figure after some time. The hottest flame burns out twice as fast and usually a marriage cant survive. Good try though.

Neil's book about her life with Steve is a masterpiece of show-biz bio, one of the best I've ever read. Impossible to put down. This show is from after Steve was already a TV star with "Wanted Dead or Alive." When they first got married, Neil was making more than 10 times the money Steve was. Steve was unsuccessfully trying to copy Marlon Brando and James Dean and was constantly unemployed while Neil was working on Broadway, and in Hollywood and Las Vegas. When they paid their first joint taxes, Steve was embarrassed to discover he made only $4000 dollars the entire year to Neil's $50,000, a huge amount of money back then. He made her promise never to let anybody know he was making so little. In LIFE magazine's stars of tomorrow spread Neil was put ahead of Joanne Woodward, Natalie Wood. It was Neil that told Steve NOT to imitate Brando & Dean and try to to bring his own unique off-screen "cool" Greenwich Village beatnik personality onto the screen. At one time they were an ideally matched couple, each burning brighter together, but Steve's post-super-stardom ego, macho BS, male chauvinism, hypocrisy, psychotic jealousy, paranoia and finally violent physical abuse destroyed everything.

You judge the man without understanding the man. I happen to have had similar afflictions in my life though not near his level of abandonment and incompetence as he experienced, but everything you see as an adult is mostly due to unraveling the weight those experiences carry. This is not meant to defend, but alter a perception, that a man's shoes and this man's shoes were a heavy thing to walk in when he would not be satisfied with being a failure. He used his wife in the beginning no doubt, but they built something together and the did love each other. The drugs and excess played a big part and if you read Neile's book, you realize that his hairdresser was a fucking peddler to McQueen and later died by the Manson family. Good riddance. But McQueen wanted his childhood and it was during that high flying time that he was grabbing it without acknowledging consequences. In his heart I believe that nobody cared about what weighed upon him and he used drugs and power to express his contempt. I'm sure if he had a real man in his life who cared about him, his decisions would have been different. I have written a novella based on him and hope to carry it to an adaptation. It would help promoting the great side of a guy who helped so many people but didn't use a PR campaign to promote it. That you are not equating into your analysis. Be very careful how you judge this guy. He was really great.

My former dance teacher, good friend, and "Papa" to my kids is Ken Malone. He is one of the dark haired dancers (the one with the most hair). You have to love 60's jazz choreography.

What a treat! I believe Neile could have become a mega star in her own right but I guess she wanted to be a stay at home mom. We all know he played around a lot but he should have been more discreet about it. Who would not have fallen in love with Steve though. Good woman, talented, good business woman. I saw a clip of her and I think it was a couple of years old. She is still slim and trim. She said of her marriage when it was good it was very good but when bad it was very bad.

Chloe wilson Being "in love" is one thing. Being a masochist to a paranoid male chauvinist hypocrite macho jackass who puts a loaded gun to the head of the mother of his children for one affair when he had had HUNDREDS is quite another. Neile almost got sucked into the masochist role hoping the McQueen she had married when she was making more than 10 times the cash he was would return. That day never came, not even with his next 2 wives. Heroic and "cool" on the screen? Yes. Heroic and "cool" off-screen, anything but.

metamorphosis67 In my comment of 7 mos old I stated what an incredible woman Neile was. Don't women work while they put their spouse through law school, med school. So that is what she did. At 1st I didn't believe he fooled around but after reading this book I knew better and retracted it in another comment! I am speaking of the man, the actor, as one he was fantastic and no-one can take that away from him. So she made more money than he. So what? He fooled around and she was aware of it but still wanted him as long as he came home to her at night. This is all old news. Get with the times.

This is not likely, but if anyone comes here and reads this, could you tell me what she was like on stage. Fosse loved her. The video stuff is not very convincing, but television at the time wasn't that great. Was she a show-stopper? Was there a lot of charisma? Like Keely Smith doesn't come off well now from television of the day, but she was the thing in the 1950s, too. Keely sang with the best and highly respected. Ms. Adams is the same way. TY in advance.

Thnx for posting this. I enjoyed it very much. In interviews of Steve mcQueen's closet friends; they say even after Steve & Neile were divorced-Neile was always the first one he called if he was ill, sad or needed help of any kind. I think she was a good match for Steve and gave him the love & support he never had in his younger life.
