I loved Nell Carter. While she had recognition, I don't think she ever had the praise she deserved as an actress, a singer, and a human being. This video shows how skillfully she could work a lyric and an emotion. Gorgeous performance of this song.

Watching on TUBI TV right now. Nell singing “Amazing Grace” at her father’s funeral & singing “I Can Lat Go Now” were my two favorite performances from this show. Her performing “Mean To Me” in “Ain’t Misbehavin’ “ is my most favorite. Nell Carter had such an amazing, beautiful & unique voice. So heartbreaking it has been silenced for so long now.

I didn't know she was going to be the original Dreamgirl Effie she left Dreamgirls to do Gimme a break instead. Jennifer Holiday mentioned it When she did the Hollywood Bowl. I can't picture anyone else but Jennifer Holiday as Effie but imagine what a different show it could have been with Nell playing Effie. Just the thought.
