It was commented in Dublin at the time, that Napoleon was Bonaparte but Nelson was blownapart.

I was a young child when it was blown up and vaguely remember it. I have often thought that it was sad to see a landmark and viewing area destroyed. I never approved of violence but think the Nelson portion should have been relocated or given to the British. The platform could have continued in use, possibly topped off by somebody like St. Patrick.

It's said that the exact moment O'Connell Street and the city centre began to go downhill can be traced to the blowing up of the Pillar in March 1966.

There's no way that statue was blown up without government approval and organisation. The IRA were just the scapegoat of were allowed to do it knowing that it was what the government wanted. I was only 7 at the time but was delighted it got blown up and was especially glad nobody was injured. I mean how can you blow up something that size in the plonk center of a big city and nobody gets injured? Had to be an organised thing but for political reasons had to be done clandestinely.
