Stone axe tips from an ex paleoanthropology student: - Make the cutting side of the stone larger so you have more weight and it doesn't slip out too often. - Make your hole between two knots in the branch so it's harder to break. - Your axe head should rest on the top and bottom of the hole, not the sides. The sides are thinner and more fragile.

American Indians would often start a fire about the base of the tree, adding a ring of wet clay at the point above which they didn't want the fire to burn. Then the stone axe would chop charcoal instead of one of the hardest woods in the forest. Besides, his wood-chopping technique seemed too random. I hope you were making real sure that the stone was not forcing the sides of the handle apart and was only putting tension on them by contacting the top and bottom of the hole. A good, seasoned wood should be really tough to break that way, even when relatively thin. Having said that, for the love of god, pick better sticks! Those look absolutely hopeless to use. Thick, heavy and crooked, I'd have trouble getting any work done even if sharp steel was at their ends.

Honestly that's not the problem there's plenty of examples of stone axes that are held together by the head being wedged into the handle like that. It's just that she didn't grind the sides down to make it slimmer and chose a rock that was too circular. You want to start off with or shape a rock, to be oblong or teardrop shaped. That way the hole is always smaller then the edge side of the head. If you look at some examples I think it's the Chinese examples that show why I'm talking about easiest though other styles use these ideas too.

@PegasusEpsilon
5 жыл бұрын
He needs to make a copper axe head with the same heft as the rock in the stone axe if he's going to fairly compare them. That tiny piece of copper is easy to turn into a sharp(ish) blade, but it's not an effective chopper, being so light, and it can't hold an edge because it's so thin. Swap the stone for copper, but keep the same profile, and you've got a proper tool. Also sharpen it with a stone hammer, not a grindstone. Copper work hardens, so it'll harden the edge. It's not steel, or even bronze (which he really ought to get to making), but it's a definite upgrade from rocks.

Copper tend to make a very poor wood wedge because of its softness you should use some type of iron wood i prefer to use Osage orange

All the haters in the comments are clueless. They are probably newbies to the channel and have zero appreciation for life itself and for the dedication and hard work andy and his crew put into this entire channel. The real OGs like mysef know better. Andy has been doing this amazing and entertaining work for many years. He started with nothing and now he's working his way to bigger and better content. To the haters, you might feel angry, but it's not because of Andy, it's because something in your life isn't right and you need to get help for whatever it is you're dealing with. I hope you get the help needed and have a happier life. To Andy and the crew, thanks for the very entertaining and funny content. Wolrd peace

And here we are enjoying some FREE content that wouldn't exist without ads or sponsors. Wait, scratch that, after the AdPocalypse, it's pretty much only sponsors that pay video creators anymore. So yeah... it's sad they need sponsors, but that's how career KZitemrs get paid.

Also, chip a groove around the circumference of your stone axe, then make your handle a 'Y' shape and slot the stone into it. Then you bind the 'Y' together and it'll hold it into place. Also, you bind below the stone to keep the handle from splitting. My mother was the exhibit coordinator for Museums of Canada in Ottawa, and I volunteered every year and actually handled many of these artifacts. I'm also an experimental lithic artist who's duplicated many of the artifacts, and have actually made the tools you're attempting.

Note, Min wage is pretty High. I mean back then in stone age. Im sure most did something like just shared with each other. Or made had like a barter system. and did some tradering later on in the stone age bronze age period. Dont think wages came around for a very long time. Think ancient Egypt ancient Greece and ancient Rome time frame is when wages start around. So would be better to use Their wage pricing if anything. Or try to find out what stuff might of been bartered or traded back in bronze age. Not use Current to date Wage prices as they actually mean Nothing. Except that, You are putting a Value on the stuff your making. Instead of just having Fun and learning about the Process and the hard work People endure back then.

Ok ... what i noticed is that you don't have much experience with axes ... if you use both hands. Let one hand slide along the axe in the swing to give it more engery. The sticks you are using are a bit short more a hatched thing. The length and arching of the stick makes a huge difference in how you can use it. Source: was cutting wood for 5 ovens every year for around 7/8 years. Learned from the 80 years old neighbor in a small village ^^

In Brazil, indigenous tribes (but also farmers of old) would just light a small fire by the trunk of the tree they would down and feed the fire throughout the day... Maybe easier than a copper axe?? xD

I'm no expert on the construction of stone axes, but some pine pitch glue might help hold the rock in. Also, you might want to wear a bicycle helmet or something when you use it, because you don't want the rock to fly out of the axe and hit you in the head.

So omg not to be funny but seriously its somthing a group of people call lefting or serving as in the money and fishing pole where left there as a act of kindness to the less fortunate and its somthing where you just leave usable items and some cash any where in the open to be found so the pole was most likely left so they could fish and the money(various) fishing stuff/bait & or food (for homless people in the area)

When you make the celt handle. Make sure the sides of the stone dont touch the wood or it will split. Only the top and bottom, but the sides need to be thick enough to withstand the force aswell aslong as they aren't touching. That primitive technology guy said that in his subtitles.

Perhaps a wide copper head on the axe with a large rock strapped to the back? Think weight and was the reason why that stone tool was so effective versus copper. I guess it was kinda unfair to compare.
@pocketpicker6613

The celt is making contact with the sides of the slot causing the handle to split. The celt should only contact the top and bottom of the slot. Also cutting downwards and not at an angle more than 70 degrees should keep the handle from splitting. There's a dude named larry kinsella who goes in depth on this on his channel.

Hey Andy! If you read this, next time you have to cut down a tree, alternate sets of upward strikes and downward strike. You want to chip out wedges with the first set, then cut the wedges you chipped out off with the other set.
@SapioiT

Andy will probably not see this, or will see and ignore this, but I wonder how difficult it would be to make a handheld circular saw powered by water using a grindstone to cut a tree. I mean, you could have someone on the sides pumping water to power the saw, and possibly cut a tree (or wood, in general) much faster.
