I recently watched your motor guide from 2015, and you suggested to watch "how to balance your blaster". Liked all of them, simple and specific. Then while watching your 2017 motor guide, you pointed out that the stock motors are good enough for IMRs. That saved me a whole lot trouble. Just wanted to ask some questions. Without opening my blaster, will there be a significant difference in using 3 IMRs instead of 2? I'm just planning of using dummies and sleeves. And if I just remove the thermistors on the flywheel and use stock wires, will it still be safe to use 3 IMRs?
@foamdataservices
7 жыл бұрын
You should never remove the thermosistor without a full rewire. It is there to protect the toy components from damage, they can't handle even IMR currents safely. You can't run 3 IMR with them in as they will trip. It's 2 IMR max for no rewire, otherwise you need under 2 ft of wire to do the job, its 8 solder joins and 3 lengths of wire,
@theoldcorporal

Foamdata Services can you give me the link for the rapidstrike full rewire? All i keep seeing is the stryfe rewire. Follow up question, what type of wire do you use for a full rewire?
@foamdataservices
7 жыл бұрын
Watch my RS guide, I only use the BSUK switch kit. Wire should be matched to expected current load. I only use silicone insulated multistrand hobby wire. If you are running a Rapidstrike then YOU CANNOT USE IMR, only packs. The current demands of the blaster, even stock, are too high for 14500/AA size cells.

Can I run Stock Stockade motors after a rewire on an 800mah 2S 40-50C LiPo? If not, what motors do you reccomend for minimal shell cutting and no real modification to the motor cage?
@foamdataservices
6 жыл бұрын
No, stockade motors are awful. You need a barricade cage and stockade wheels. If you are getting a Barricade for the cage anyway use the motors too. The Stockade cage can't take any other motor types, the pancake motors it uses are totally different. Also remember power source responds to load placed upon it, batteries don't push current. Watch my matching video.

In a Rapidstrike with honey badgers in an aluminium cage do I need to modify the case? I really don't want to mod the case but if I have to I will. I also don't want a very high rate of fire(think slightly faster than a semi auto) so with a 2s what would you recommend. Any info would be appreciated.
@foamdataservices

The shell doesn't require cutting for any 130 sized motor. I would use the Meishel 2:0 motors for both pusher and flywheel, wire three switch live centre for perfect fire control. That will give 12dps max and around 130fps with decent precision wheels. I don't like Honeybadgers, especially as pushers, they have very poor torque vs Meishels.
@user-ve1cc6qn6t

Is it fine to use the Honey badgers with 2 of the Samsung 25r 20A cells or are there other better alternatives? I've decided that the 25r 18650's are better in my opinion than a regular Li-Po.
@foamdataservices
4 жыл бұрын
Hair 18650 is nowhere near as good as pouch cell lipo, apart from the fact that it can be discharged lower, making it a tiny bit easier to manage. It can’t put out nearly enough power, you can pull 50A or more out of even a modest lipo and hybrid chemistries are capable of 80A burst. I am not a fan if Honeybadgers either, they are good for small high rpm wheels like the FTW ones but on bigger precision concave wheels torque is king. Also you need a high discharge 18650 cell holder or you have to make your own pack.

Noise is inevitable, the only way to reduce it is use better balanced flywheels set up precisely and a metal or printed cage. I would run Rhinos on 3s as the Artifact motors are totally unproven. Rhinos are fine with 18awg silicone insulated multistrand. If in doubt about wire choice, check the motor stall currents on Britnerf, multiply by number of motors, then check the wire manufacturers data sheet for burst current rating. You want the total load to be at least 10% less than the wires max. If in doubt go bigger.

No, you cannot use 14500 IMR's with modded motors, Rhinos draw too much current. You need either 18650 IMR or a 3s Lipo.
@RoryStarr
7 жыл бұрын
This is quite helpful. How does an MTB Rhino do on a 2S? Is it too much draw? I don't actually care about buying a 3S. What I want is flexibility in the performance. I'm trying to find a way to wire up something will get around stock performance, but could run higher if need be (basically so I can adjust for who I play with). Knowing nothing of electronics, I assumed it was mostly a matter of buying two different lipos. Then I found out the engines are more finicky than that and running certain engines can cause you to tax a battery in a dangerous way. My plan is already to rewire with 16 awg hobby wire, so that's not my concern. I'm not a kid, and I'm clever. I can learn what I need to learn, I'm just lost if this is even possible.
@foamdataservices
7 жыл бұрын
If you want something that shoots stock then rewire, keep the motors stock, then use AA batteries for stock performance and 2-3IMR cells for modded. Rhinos do 95-100fps on 2s depending on wheels etc and 110-125fps on 3s. Any mod motor will give a substantial performance increase. The other alternative is to keep stock stuff for stock power and modded stuff for modded power.
@RoryStarr

I had a feeling that would be the response and rightly so. The IMR path was what most seemed to recommend. My issues are the IMR's limit me, and require me to buy a charger I may only use for a few months before I get annoyed and want to upgrade anyways. I'm guessing the IMR wears on the stock engines no? Durability is reason enough to upgrade. I suppose at the end of the day it's probably cheaper to buy a second stock stryfe. Space was my motivation for avoiding that. Thank you for the response.

Figure it out for yourself- 2x hellcat= 44A, 1x Wolverine= 60A = 104A potential peak load, multiply by 1.2 for 20% safety margin= 125A BURST. Proposed pack is 65c @ 1000 mah so multiply by 65 by 2.2 = 143A max out the pack. Personally I would ditch thewolverine and use a hellcat instead. They are not available in RC equipment, all MTB motors were specially made versions for nerf. Many helicopters use FK180 Sh 3240 motors AKA "Blades" which are shown in this video. Look on the motor case for markings. If yours are unmarked quit being a scrub and buy proper mod motors, there's loads of good ones now.

IMR is a LITHIUM CHEMISTRY, it still requires you to not over discharge it, not leave it unattended whilst charging and watch the load applied. If you are putting in anything other than stock motors, you need the performance of a pack. You can mess about with unsuitable 18650 batteries all you like, they aren't as good as even Nimh. Check airsoft packs out, they all do about 20-25c. If you run 18650 you still need a high power battery holder, you can't put 20A through crap spring connectors. LIPO IS NOT DANGEROUS, this myth needs to die. It's FAR SAFER than over discharging high internal resistance IMR cells simply because you want something shaped like a consumer battery.
@Cole-pq7hu
7 жыл бұрын
thanks, do you have a link to your nimh pack please as i cant find one with that kind of discharge?
So can you run barricade motors with 3 trustfure or imr batteries
@foamdataservices
6 жыл бұрын
The only use for three Trustfires is to put them in the bin where they belong. Barricade motors are similar to the original MTB rhino in spec, they will run up to 3s but are metal brushes so not that durable. They draw about 4A each peak so are OK for IMR. Trashfires can barely manage 2A peak, and Coolook LiFepo is not much better.

great to have an update to this, know where the MTB motors stand outside of the fact that everyone uses them (including myself) and that 2S doesn't have much point; I have ONE build where I'd like a smaller battery, but it won't likely be able to deliver enough current for the 2S motors because it will be too small. Good to know I should just stick with 3S. Side note though, I feel like brushless would be easier than using afterburners. Might still be a hassle at the moment, but all it takes is for someone to come up with an easier way of doing it and then it will become the norm...
@foamdataservices
7 жыл бұрын
Meh, brushless adds nothing but expense and FPS you can't use with most darts. It won't become the norm, you can hit 140 with £20 worth of brushed motors, no ESC, total reliability. If i want to shoot more than that I will use HPA or play paintball/airsoft. If you want small batteries that deliver high currents then you should check out Tattu's 650mah 3s, Tunrnigy LiHv and Graphene. Any motor shooting over 100fps needs at least 20c@1000mah so 2-3s isn't much of a jump. Low profile tray expander are readily available for most blasters now, plus Jase 3D has nice ones for rayvens and demolisher s.
@PAPO1990
7 жыл бұрын
fair enough, but with custom cages and more dart crush, maybe larger flywheels, I'm sure there's things that can be done. As for HPA, here it's not readily available, and it's a completely different skill set which can be a tough mod for some people. Just an interesting new avenue for experimentation, which is always more interesting than doing the same thing that everyone's been doing all the time. yeh, I know what sort of C ratings I need, and have already designed and 3D printed my own battery tray expander for the Barricade/ Stockade I'm modding, just still might be a tight fit for the batteries at the local hobby shop.

You shouldn't use 14500/AA junk in full auto. If you want a small power increase, with minimal work, use a 7.2-8.4v airsoft Nimh and a simple pack hack with the stock loom. Tamiya motors are shit. m.imgur.com/a/iSyXh You can run 2s Hyperion or Meishel motors off a good 8.4v Nimh pack. Airsoft size ones fit the RS tray, they should be under 135mm long. The RS is an all or nothing system, either get a full rewire and real motors from www.blastertech.com.au/ or leave it alone and use the pack hack. The world has moved on, we no longer have to use rubbish like RM2 and AA cells.

The Rhino is a 3s motor, RS flywheel motors will burn out in 3s. You could have a pair of Rhinos on the flywheels, Meisyel 2.0 on the pusher, run it at 2s. That gives you 12 Darts/Sec at 98-100 fps with stock flywheels. Be aware that RS flywheels are trash, swap them for a matched stryfe pair if you want to hit anything.

Don't know if you saw, but there was a post on the Reddit about some new pretty good 180 motors. Maybe you should test them out.

Foamdata Services Lol. Good to know. I was the one to post it. I live in Canada and I couldn't find and MTB motors that didn't cost $20 in shipping. Found these motors instead. They are working very well. 35,000 RPM at 2S with 10A stall. They work fine at 3S though.

35k at 2s is oerfect. You will be making them too hot for flywheel use on 3s though they might be ok as a pusher on 3s. I very much doubt that 10A stall is correct, assume its higher. BSUK ship motors to canada for a lot less than $20.

Foamdata Services Stall might be higher. We tested with a multimeter by holding the shaft still. As you know, multimeters aren't always accurate. Sadly, 2 hellcats from BSUK will cost $30CAD. If I ever feel like making the best stryfe I can, I will definitely pick hellcats over these motors.

You said just shipping from US was $20 so $30 for two shipped is cheap. Multimeter data is not a proper measure of stall.

Any chance of a new one of these being made?
@foamdataservices
4 жыл бұрын
ALPHA I could do, however if you buy your motors from Nerf suppliers these days you can be assured that they will work, it just comes down to which ones you can get easily. When au started these videos bad motors were the norm, now all the OOD and Foamblast ones are good, there’s very few truly awful motors being sold.

Look at the linked data sheet, they have poor torque and consume twice the current of 2 or 3s motors. There really is no need to use them now there is proper motor choice, we have great 2 and 3s options in 130, 132 and 180 size.

Charger- Turnigy S60, get one with the correct plug for your region, batteries are tuned to the blaster, motor set up and voltage. I did a video on how to spec a battery. Buy from Hobbyking.

Turnigy accucell S60 is a MAINS CHARGER, it doesn't need a PSU. Read the description.hobbyking.com/en_us/accuell-s60-ac-charger-uk-plug.html

Whoever wanted a stock motor equivalent- Put a Wanted advert on any Nerf forum or Nerf Facebook group, people throw stock motors away and most modders have tons of them spare.
