anyone can get hurt. that said if you workout and harden your body you will bounce off object better than smashing into them. sound crazy i know but it's real. when i ride and fall i don't fear damage as much when my body is hardened. im 54 and ride all kinds of crazy trail as well as downhill on mountains. i have taken a few hard falls, i've only gotten a minor break in a tiny bone in a finger joint on a hand that took 170lbs of my body weight full force and moving fast. you don't have to lift weights but its great. body weight exercises will get you there "calisthenics". to get your body hard you have to put in the work and rest.

Lower back stuff is no joke. A year ago November, I was riding a roadie century. 108 miles and 9k feet of climbing. Started feeling sciatic pain before the event, but that didn't stop me from riding. After the event, I quit riding cold turkey - was just burned out on training rides. Had a small accident and was left with debilitating sciatic pain. Couldn't sit or lay down for two weeks. not even to sleep. And nerve pain is something pain killers can't help with. Additionally, I could not use my right calf muscles the nerves could not tell them to flex. Turned out I had a herniated disk in S1, L5. a year later, I am doing some light riding mostly on the mtb. Mostly symptom free now. Lots of core exercises and proper stretching. The MTB which I bought before the back injury - I'm even more stoked about it now. 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR 6Fattie S-works. 650b Wheels with 3" tires. Inflate those to ~15/16 PSI (F/R) and it's ultra, magic-carpet smooth. and completely un-phased by rocks, tanbark, gravel, roots, etc. Yeah, as others whine about, you loose a little bit of trail feel with the big tires, but just learn to ride around it. Honestly, the first time I saw the that mid-fat bike, I thought it was the stupidest thing I ever saw and wrote them off mentally until I rode one and learned just how capable they are and was much faster than I imagined. There was one at a bike demo at my local trail back-yard trail system, so after some Santa Cruz bikes and Yetis and the Specialized enduro, I just thought I should try that 6fattie a try if I was gonna spend that much on a bike. Ordered that 6fattie the next week...

Stretching is key or at least for me. I can tell when I'm not actuve enough or stretching enough thanks to the pains and strains over the years. One thing that I've noticed is that my diet affects how I feel overall and that is tied in with the energy levels and how my body heals up from stress/strain, and injuries which life either easier or harder. Good l uck man I'm trying to heal up from strains from work.

For improving lumbar and pelvic alignment, tilt your seat fwd a few degrees at a time until you feel no more back strain. This helped me a ton. Foam roll your hamstrings, glutes and especially adductors (inner thighs). Core and hip strength, yoga, no backpack. Eventually, the sciatica will not go away if you keep injuring yourself. You do not want a back surgery.

Injuries suck but they are always a learning experience. I recently learned that an old cycling friend crushed his face after clipping his bar on a tree. Watching this video, I can't help but to think the whole 800mm bar thing is causing older riders to misjudge these narrow moves.

I went full yoga for awhile with great results but have since condensed it into a 20 minute routine every night while watching TV. Two things I haven't seen below, 1. Iliosacral stretch is the #1 solution for me with sciatica, 2. Acupuncture can be a quite effective immediately intervention for a sciatica flare-up.

I was in the same boat as you last year prior to surgery. Dealt with sciatic pain for 4 years(firefighting and Crossfit poor recovery) I had surgery last March after I lost complete function/sensation in my right leg, but the pain was still there. Was on a morphine drip for 3 days then had a double laminectomy. Woke up pain free and could move my legs. I say all that to offer some advice. I was directed towards Stuart McGill. He is a back guru. I have read all of his books and have followed his protocol since. I am pretty much normal again with some numbness and foot drop but I can enjoy Mountain biking again and pick up my two girls. Be careful with the yoga stuff as some positions can aggravate the nerve. If you are still having trouble I’d read “Back Mechanic” Enjoy your new bike!

I fell this past summer riding a trail I ride a couple times a week. I stalled on a climb, and miss judged the trail, it dropped off a couple of feet, I fell landing on my side and back. I thought I cracked my ribs, road and walked my way out. A couple days later I had a CAT scan. Ribs wers fine but my back was not, four broken transverse vertebrae in my lower back. I am lucky to still be walking and I should be ok. I have been riding since the 80s and have had very few serious falls but I am also getting older late 50s. I have been skiing this winter and plan on riding in the spring as a I miss, I am getting some type of spine protection and I dont care if its hot or anything. I fell on a large rock, if I was moving fast I am sure I would not be walking. I have had my share of injuries skiing and rock climbing but this one really scared me. Take care, have fun, life and our bodies can be fragile.

By far the greatest bike I have ever been upon, stable strong and fast. Climbs like a goat, which really helps the back in ways unnoticed until evening talks around the local establishment or campfire. Always ready to ride next day. I had a shoulder injury at the end of April, a near torn AC joint. I was 5-6 weeks off the trails. Been doing even more strength training since then to fully recover. I still have some pain in certain positions, but the shoulder is stable and it's pretty much at 85% strength, but I'm planning to get back to 100% and beyond during this off season. For about 2 months I've been doing some yoga (thanks to my girlfriend), and I can really see why it's beneficial in the sense that I too have stiffness issues (mainly in my hips) and this helps me to loosen up/relax a bit, but most importantly expand my mobility, so I am thankful for taking this step. I can highly recommend you improve your core strength (2 daily minutes of plank really does wonders, totally eliminates lower back pain during riding, and helps you on the downhills and in a more efficient power transfer to the legs while seated and standing), do some full body workouts, and really put emphasis on warming up and then doing a thorough stretch. I wish you a lot patience, resilience, drive and optimism with overcoming this injury and hopefully you'll be good as new for 2019. Another tip that I can point out to (no matter how weird it may sound), is practice catapulting from your bike in the instance of a crash. The more you tense up during a crash, the more likely you will do more damage to yourself. Just roll with it, or as Bruce Lee used to say: “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend”. I know it can be a matter of split seconds, but if you put more awareness in practicing controlled crashing, you will definitely hurt yourself less. Speaking of your new bike, I am really curious on your initial impressions regarding the Mondraker Foxy you demoed. I am really torn between a Foxy 29 and Scott Ransom. I heard a lot of good stuff about the Ripmo, but I don't have access to one where I live (Romania). Cheers & healing vibes!

I feel for you man! I have a herniated disc at L5 S1. The sciatica can be extremely painful. Last year I received a epidural cortisone steroid injection and it did wonders for the pain. However, I never really did anything after that so it returned a few weeks ago while I was out on the trail. I received another injection and returned riding, but I am looking into yoga now as well to hopefully keep this from happening again. I'm doing my best to avoid surgery. If the pain is unbearable, I'd look into an injection while you look for other long-term solutions.

Dude. 4/12/14, I crashed on a track doing 130mph on my motorcycle. Got life- flighted off. I'm jacked and missing 1/3 of my left quad. I had a nerve study by a neurologist. 50% of my nerves in my left leg was severed. 3/31/17 I was driving in my car doing 60mph and got hit from the rear by a driver doing over 100mph. I got jacked even more. 12/16/18 I was in Florida I got hit by a vette and it went under my SUV and launched the back up and slammed me forward and up. I have to bring meds on my bike ride to this day. Since then I've been over the bars and pumped off the trail. I can be a PUSSY cat or just power through the pain. You want to talk about sciatica? I've got it, even as I type this. I learn to live with it. The more in shape I get the better I deal with it. Just keep on keeping on!

I'm 49 and have been MX'n, BMX'n and DH'n most of my life, broke my neck and lower back, suffered from sciatica because of multiple severe herniated/bulging discs, etc... I've been through a lot over the last 30 years, especially with my lower back, lets just say I can save you a lot of time with your healing protocol. The first advise I can give you from experience, do not join any group classes when you're healing and do not attempt any exercises you find on the internet until you see a pro first, worst thing you can do. If you have preexisting conditions that need attention trying to fix yourself by following some mobility exercises online or going to group classes, even yoga, can cause you more harm than good. Many of the exercises performed in these classes may cause you harm, depending on your injury, you just can't get the attention you need online or in a group setting. Also from experience, when you're injured stay away from Yoga. I did yoga for many years and had to give up a lot of the exercises because many of the yoga poses would cause me to re-injured myself. Yoga is great to incorporate into your overall training, but some back injuries require more focused specific movements and trying to figure out which Yoga posses help or hinder is annoying. Just find a trainer that specializes in sports injuries and mobility, see 3 below. Physical Therapy works great too, but its good in the beginning, when you are recovering from a injury, after that you need to find a good trainer. 1) Start eating a more anti-inflammatory diet, especially during a flareup or re-injury. There's a lot of info online on what foods can help reduce inflammation. Take supplements that suppress inflammation , what worked for me was curcumin, Terry Naturally Curamin Pain Reliever Extra Strength. This will not work quickly like ibuprofen, you need to take this daily as a supplement to load up in your system. The curcumin takes a few days to load up in your muscles, once loaded it will help relax your muscles and help you recover quicker if you re-injure the area. 2) Find a way to decompress your back daily, a decompression table works great or floating in a pool. There are also some simple decompression exercises for the lower back that work great. 3) Find a good trainer with knowledge in functional movement training. The trainer will know exactly what you need after a evaluation. What worked for me was core strength, flexibility in specific areas and a lot of time with mobility exercises specific for my weaknesses. Your body has healed itself, but if not properly trained during this healing your muscles may have developed an imbalancement which can cause chronic issues in the long term. It is paramount to find a pro that can see these imbalancements and correct them. You definitely will not find that with a general trainer nor in a yoga class. You are in CO, if you are close to Greenwood Village, CO go check out Coach Dee at enduromtbtraining.com/ you will not find anyone better! 4) Acupuncture!!!! This was what helped me more than anything, I can't stress this point enough, without it I would not be able to ride at the level that I ride at 49. Find a reputable Acupuncturist who is preferably a licensed OMD (Oriental Medical Doctor) and stick with them. Every time you feel a tweak, even slightly, go for a session and it will be gone! After debilitating back issues and many cortisone injections from 16 to 30 yrs old, I was eventually told by a orthopedic dr that I would need to have spinal surgery to fuse my s1, L5, L4, L3 vertebrae and my riding days would be over. Luckily I live in NY and through luck at 30 I was introduced to a Chinese OMD who treated me with herbal medicines and acupuncture for 3 months, when he was done I NEVER had another back spasm ever again. I do have sciatica issues that still flare up every few years, but one or two visits to the OMD and its gone. After you've treated the area with acupuncture, if you re-injure the area the pain won't be as extreme and the treatments work much quicker there after. When I re-injure my back now, it takes about 1 to 3 visits and I'm good to go. I wish you all the best with your healing journey!

Sorry bro, that sucks. Def agree with BKXC- crosstrain once you are able. I’ve compound fractured radius and ulna, torn both MCLs, have Grade 4 chondromalacia of patella, osteonecrosis of talus with surgery that seems to have worked, dislocated every finger at some point, toenails that have been crushed so many times they barely grow anymore, stingers in my neck at least 3 times, numerous concussions, orbital blowout fracture, rib fractures numerous times, broken my nose a few times, stitched up more times than I can count, had sciatica (although thankfully short lived) a few times like you, and probably some other things I am forgetting. But that’s the price of over 25 years of playing Rugby and living a life worth living. The first few steps in the morning suck sometimes, but otherwise I just live with and keep on keeping on. You will too. They will only hold you back if you let them. Hell, at WV Dirtfest there was a dude (probably wounded warrior from the looks but I didn’t ask and he didn’t say- instead we talked about bikes and the trails and stuff) who was a double amputee out there on a three wheeled hand pedal bike. So fuck yeah- just get better and get out there. I’m 47 now and if you check out my channel you’ll see I still like to hit it pretty hard. Don’t hit as big a drops and jumps as I used to, but I still get air and still bomb it as fast I can. Re your next rig- check out the 2019 Santa Cruz Bronson. It’s a beast. I did a three part review on channel. I’m ordering mine next week. I also really liked the new Pivot Trail 429 for a shorter travel 29er. But I already have a trail hardtail for trails around DC, and I needed a bruiser for the Appalachian Mountains- I like the maneuverability of a 27.5 with big squish to handle the chunk. I might have a bit of a bias toward smaller more maneuverable bike though bc I come from bmx and not road bikes (I hate road weenies). The new Bronson is a better fit for what I want to ride. But if I were to upgrade my around DC bike it’d be that Pivot- it’s a freaking rocket. Btw- I also have a longer torso too and have always liked a long front and even though both the Pivot and Bronson have gotten longer I sized up to an XL on both and love the fit. They both keep the seat tube short so no worries with dropper. Also standover is super short on Bronson- I’m 5’10” and can stand over it with no problem and even lift it while standing over and turn it under me. Heal up and get out there.

I strained my back putting my bike into my car trunk after riding.😂 Your situation is exactly why I dont understand the new trend towards 750 to 800mm bars. I guess it depends on the terrain you ride most. Ive been riding 30 years. The widest bars I have are 680. Anything wider doesnt work well on the trails I ride. I even notice re-routing on certain sections because people cant get their wide bars through the trees.

Man, that sucks! I’ve had lower back issues for almost 20 years and sciatica for about 10. All is good now (knock on wood) mainly because of core strength training with stability and flexibility. If you’re bendy enough you can ride and crash an Ill-fitting bike all day😁

How have you recovered after two years? I had a crash with my BMX and hurt my left ankle and pulled muscles of my left leg and left hand as well. It took about 8 weeks for the left leg to function normally but not 100% recovered yet. Now I feel 99% recovered but some some weird feeling on my left hand and ankle. Now I am cutting back on the maximum intensity workout when I do treadmill and weight training until I feel 100%.

My severe sciatica 30 yrs ago, work related, cured by getting on a road bike. Couldn't walk without pain and dragging my numb foot around. In the saddle you remove a lot of body weight from the lower back allowing the tightened muscles protecting the injured area to relax, strengthen and realign. Been riding and racing mostly MTB ever since. Over the winter I jump on the Jonny G spinner I've had for 20 years 8-10 minutes, 8-10 minutes yoga planks off my knees to strengthen my core and a few reps with free weights. Your back lets you know if you're over doing it. My #1 is a Pivot 429c, #2 a Giant Anthem X. I see you picked up a GT but if I was to get another it would be a Giant. Good geometry, quality and value.

I had pinch nerve issues on my neck (c6 / c7) the recovery time was long but staying positive! Doing a lot of stretches and keeping the body moving physical (not sitting at a desk and staring at your monitor don't count) and I was back within a couple months. I will tell you that going to a chiropractor helped loosen the bones / alignments and going to a acupuncture that knows about nerves will really help you! Whatever you do, don't pop pills as I used to be in the medical line of business and knowing that physicians being suckers / sold to pharmaceutical sales rep to having patients pop pills for for maintenance and not for curing. As for the yeti, cut your darn seat post!! Its been done over at World Wide Cyclery ;) . Get well buddy and hope for a super fast 1000% speedy recovery!

Thanks man! I avoid pills whenever possible. The steroids are just short term to help things heal a little better, after that I shouldn't need anything. I have also thought about going and getting an adjustment to help get any pressure off the nerves and help get things mobile for stretching them out. As far as cutting the ST... Man, I thought really long and hard about it, but I think I need more reach regardless. 469mm is just a bit too short still. When I get onto bike with 480 It feels about right.

Sorry to hear about the troubles Joseph. I have the same problem where I don't chill after a crash and typically make it worse. I'm fond of the Jeffsy. Rode with someone last week who had the 29er version and it was sweet!

I would suggest the Scott Genius. You can run 29 or 27.5 wheelset. 150mm travel. With twin lock you can drop down to 110mm travel for more xc/climbing. 2019 model has a ramp control in the rear shock.

Wow 6’2 with only a 32” inseam you are really going to need a long reach bike. I’m 6’ with a 34” inseam and still wish I could get my seat lower on my Nomad 4 with 170 dropper so I can’t imagine how tall you must feel with 100 and that seat tube. You might be the perfect customer for something like Pole or Transitions new geometries.

Also get a foam roller and use it consistently, it might be painful in the beginning but it will stretch you out, i wish you a 100% full recovery, i had the epidural back injections years ago and for ME they worked miracles, i had a good Doctor and my body responded but i still take 4 300 mg caps of Gabapentin daily I am 66 but in much better than 'average' shape, all my joints are 100%, i stretch, lift light weights, etc. I had a 2019 RM Instinct BC edition that i upgraded with XO 10-52, carbon bars, wheels, 100 gram lighter seat, RSC brakes and a few other things but a Blue trail rider. About a year ago i was at Uwharrie national forest and riding the most difficult trail there which is labeled Blue but more than a few feel it should be Black at least in certain areas and those areas have be careful/dangerous signs posted but anyway its VERY rocky in certain areas and my front wheel got stuck between a few rocks and within a millisecond i was down a ravine 20-30 feet and the bike was another 20-30. When i realized what happened i went down to get the bike, pushed it up to the trail, straightened the bars then proceeded to walk/ride back to the parking lot. I had some bruised ribs i assume as i couldnt even sleep on 1 side for at least a few weeks, i am 100% now fortunately. A guy on youtube with a Yeti 150 that lives in NC was at Uwharrie and crashed i think on the same trail and needed plenty of stitches on his lower leg immediately after the accident. About 6 months ago I ended up selling the bike in 1 day as a freak thing so now looking at a 2021 SB-115 T-2 with XO. If i buy it i will be riding the tamer trails there and other places, i would rather enjoy the ride and push myself physically than ride something too dangerous or way beyond my skill level, it was the huge and loose rock garden that got me so sometimes things happen and if you ride with Alex and Brian they both ride serious Black trails which for plenty of people is beyond their skill level, I watch them both. Trail riding is fun but there are other ways of staying in shape that are much safer in a controlled environment and dont require traveling hours to get there either.

Personally I've found too high a saddle can aggravate the hamstrings... too low knees. So if you've compromised on optimum saddle height to get the bike to fit elsewhere chances are your doing damage or not helping it. Biggest mistake you can make is get obviously injured and not know when to quit... we've all done it but it can lead to lifelong issues.
@TrailFeatures
5 жыл бұрын
Very good points. I was able to get the saddle high dialed in, but with only 100mm of drop on such a big bike it was a bad setup. The new 2019 GT sensor I got is a much better fit overall!

get a big 12 x 15 reusable ice pad, freeze it, wrap in thin towel, place under lower back and lay on it. works wonders. as for bikes, your never gonna find a frame that fits, I would recommend getting a custom, one off frame built, transfer your components over. your a thin guy, your do not need those wide bars, even more so since your riding in heavy wooded areas. as your learned the hardway. I have had my far share hardways..raced MTB for over 20 years.

I've ridden quite a few different bikes at this point, and as far as mid travel 29ers go you have to take a look at the Norco Sight, it is absolutely fantastic, it's very well rounded at a great price point. The C9.3 has a stellar build kit with a DVO diamond, which once dialed in is probably the best air fork on the market for less than most companies NX build kits.
