Not until the invention of KZitem was I finally able to see the speed boat in this game. Because I could never get that far.

I had gotten to the boat a few times, but never made it to the point where the boat docks again. I was expecting... more than what there was.

The trick is to drive really slow. Collisions don’t kill you then. Easy to make it to the boat.

I could usually get there, and I could sometimes finish that segment, but the cruise boats (the boats that torpedoes) are very tricky. I would pull to the side and stop whenever I heard them, and lay on the machine guns. They would pass me, then scoot in front of me and get shot before loosing (great verb!) a torpedo at me. It was a delicate maneuver!

One 7 Decimal 2 Eight don’t lie, you mean in the thousands of times you tried, lol. Crazy difficult game, as were many of the old school games.

I can't believe all these years later. That I just now realized I played this game when I was a child on my ants. Pc, I used to play this lego island 3D pin ball and the bionicle matinee back in the day

what is crazy/interesting is the Spy Hunter car is based on a real one. It's called the Isdera Imperator and was partly manufactured by Mercedes Benz.

Y'know, I used to play this game on the C64 all the time. I never realised it had a win-condition. I always figured it was just infinite.
@link_7777

It is effectively infinite. The map is roughly tree shaped, but the end points loop back to somewhere. Visiting the entire map made sense for a TAS, but there are also a couple of other reasonable goals for RTA speedruns

I can’t find a TAS for the arcade version anywhere. Someone should definitely do one.

There was a code for nes version that would give you up to 10 extra lives at the end of the initial count down clock. It worked 60% of the time everytime

What happens if you keep on the bridge to the right instead of going to the speed boat on the left?
@link_7777
3 жыл бұрын
It will probably make more sense if you look at the map in my tasvideos submission notes, but in this route I skipped the boat in desert area 8 opting to take a right and go to area 3. Later in desert area 7 I take the boat (areas 9 and 10). Were I to skip the boat there as you suggest my choices would be to go left to area 3 or right to area 2, both of which I already visited

Hey if they decide to do a remake of the original Spy Hunter for the NES, they should add a special "motion blur effect" whenever a car goes fast! You would definitely get the feel of how fast you're going.

@Phillip Grimsrud haha jeez I thought I was just bad and this game gave me so much anxiety when I was 4-5 years old because I got well passed this but never beat it. Never looked to see a full playthrough until now I'm in my 30's and finding out from this post. 😆

You never made it to the snow area. Might that be included in a future run? I mapped out this game. You can find the maps here: nesmaps.com/maps/SpyHunter/SpyHunterMapSelection.html
@link_7777
4 жыл бұрын
The snow area was not included because it is not a unique area. When I researched the inner workings of the game I found that the snow is just a modifier that changes the pallette and the physics, it is not a unique part of the map. If you look back at your map (nicely done by the way) you'll see that the snow area is the same as your area 3 (excepting color). It also looks like your map is missing area 10, a short chunk of desert only accessible by leaving the water area. See the mapping information I posted on this forum www.speedrun.com/spy_hunter/thread/4amjm

I remember getting this from my parents as a birthday present, playing it for maybe fifteen minutes, and then agreeing unanimously that it was a gigantic unplayable ripoff before returning it to the store the next day. (I got Mike Tyson's Punch-Out out of the deal, which I consider one of the biggest wins of my childhood.) Make no mistake, the arcade original was already pretty terrible. It seemed that Bally Midway was actively attempting to make _the most irritating video game in existence._ Can't scratch most of the enemies with your primary weapon, the one actually good weapon showing up once in a blue moon, lots of soft targets which serve no purpose but to wreck your score, you die from going too fast, you die from going too slow, you die from misjudging your Road Lord-bash, you die from misjudging a turn, you die from steering too hard, you die from not steering hard enough, you die and you die and you die and you _die and die and die and die and die..._ yeah. But at least you got to sit in a cockpit and see the flashy icons light up and turn a snazzy wheel and move a gearshift. The NES had none of that. It was just constant danger and death from everywhere. (It didn't help that those razzafrakkin Mad Bombers showed up like twenty times as often.) A completely beautiful run for a completely ugly game. Here's to TASing.
