But what about older FM chips, for example in Sega Mega Drive/Genesis?

Good question... For all i know, the YM2151 generates instruments using sine waves inside each operator... But i'm not sure what about the OPN/A/B/2 series... but it think it's the same wave, but with SSG-EG effects. With OPL series, it's a bit more difficult. As the OG (YM3526) uses only a sine wave, and it's succesor (YM3812) doesn't support 4-OP mode despite having a few waveforms.

is it just a sine wave with a high pitched saw?

It's a triangle wave with rotated phase.

That "Sine wave" would be the YM2151... That's the OPL3, they're both different ;)

If you know what you're aiming for, then yeah. Never tested the YM2414 though, so i'm not 100% certrain.
