When we had a problem with the wire connections my husband immediately went to the furnace took off the bottom plate and found the 4 wires running from the thermostat. Then he wrote down the wire color and the letter the wire connected to . WENT BACK TO THE THERMOSTAT and connected the thermostat in conjunction to the color of the wires and how they were labeled in the furnace. It's a sure way of being positive that the thermostat is wired correctly.

At 5:20 you have shown us wiring that included the blue wire. For the life in me I could not get the wiring right even after watching myriad of KZitem videos, official and fan made. Thanks to your diagram I was able to solve this mystery and everything is now working :) Basically my red was in Rh, not Rc, and my blue was in C, thinking it was a common wire, instead of the star. Thank you for saving me a phone call to a technician :)

The C wire does not supply power to your Tstat.. the R wire does that. The C or common wire is basically the neutral side of the circuit.

Now its working with yellow (Y1), Green (G), White (W) and Red (Rc). I am still not sure if I need the black wire just to avoid any future complications. Please advise. Thank you.

maybe not since the nest customer service had advised you already not to use it. Although i would just make sure that the bare copper is not exposed when you tuck it in behind the wall so that it does not accidentally touch the terminals.

your old thermostat was actually wired pretty cleverly. The W (heat) call was jumpered to your Y (cool call/compressor). So when it asks for heat it engages the compressor without the reversing valve O activated and you get heat. When it asks for cold it engages the reversing valve O and your Y and you get cold. Is your unit actually producing heat now? Would think you would still want to have that jumper setup in your nest like you had before due to the way its wired in your old thermostat.

Yes. it's working fine after the technician came in and connected the common wire. The instructions say remove all jumper wires when you connect to nest.

In the other diagram they said it was there, but didn't show it. If you have a multi meter these are kind of interesting to see in real time what the thermostat is doing. Use your continuity tester and see what connections are made.

I added a Honeywell RTH6580WF to my home recently. I discovered no c wire. Without knowing what all it involved, I found the blue wire tucked into the wire bundle as it had been cut off since not in use. I stripped it and applied it to my thermostat. Still no power. I then went down to my furnace to see the blue wire was not hooked up either it was just wrapped around the same wire bundle going to the thermostat. I stripped it and hooked it to the C terminal on the furnace. Now the C terminal had a white and brown already attached going to the AC. But you can hook more wires to the C. You can hook the 3 right into the terminal or you can bundle them together with a 4 wire called a pigtail then you only have one single wire hooked to the C terminal. User preference. So don't just assume because you found the blue wire in your wall or wire bundle behind your thermostat that its connected to the C terminal in your furnace. You will be best to take the panel off your furnace , find if a C wire is connected and determine the color while making sure it's the wire bundle going to the thermostat.

Hello Juan. Thats what I can't determine how the contractor found out. He didn't even use a multimeter. I. Assuming they already know the confoguration of which of the step down transformers in the air handler provides the 24V. I'm sorry I cant answer your question directly. But that's exactly what I don't know how he found out which wire to tap into.

What would cause the nest to cause my furnace to short cycle? i installed my nest and when i emailed nest support to see if my system was compatible i was told to wire to the white and red i tried to turn on my furnace and it would turn on.. then off shortly then on then off.. I installed my old thermostat and my furnace works fine. so i'm not sure if the nest support gave me the right set up.. but something isn't working correctly. Thanks in Advance :)

The first thing that I learned is that making sure you know the kind of AC/heating system you are installing the nest to. Is it a heat pump? Gas pack? Split system? Nest has instructions to wire them differently. So I would start with that. Then figure out which color wire is using what function so you can direct it to go to the right terminal of the thermostat. That’s usually what the confusion comes from just like what I encountered.
@Downfallofusall91
4 жыл бұрын
@@homerentLV I couldn't find what type it was i believe it's possible a split system when i was talking to the furnace expert when he was servicing it he said that i can run ac through my system as well (it's only used for heat) forced hot air. i swapped my nest back out for my old thermostat to make sure that it wasn't my furnace. It has been a hassle, there's a green wire in my bundle of wires but it was never hooked up to my old thermostat as well as I didn't see a green wire anywhere downstairs for my furnace.
@homerentLV
4 жыл бұрын
If there’s a condenser unit separate for your furnace then It seems like you do have a split system. Don’t worry about the extra wire because that might just be part of the bundle that was left unused. Nest support can send a tech but you have to first troubleshoot with them. Now that you have figured out your system type you should properly be able to describe to them through the phone what you are going through. Key thing right now is that when you connected the old thermostat your furnace still works 😂
@Downfallofusall91

It does I put the old thermostat back on the furnace still works.. I ordered a c wire adapter to plug into an adapter so I can feed the 24v the thermostat needs. It was leeching off furnace which was messing with it (I hope) the only difference between my old thermostat and new one is that the last one had batteries in it. So getting the C wire to power the nest and im hoping that's it. If not I'll be contact the nest support 😂 let's hope for the best though.

Just installed a Nest Thermostat without the C wire. In my case I have 4 wires, white, yellow , red and green. It has both AC and gas heat. It is winter time now so I have had the heat on but I did test the cooling and it worked fine. Do you think I should be worried about getting the C wire installed? It has been only three days since I installed it and so far it is working fine.
@hillboy2001
5 жыл бұрын
From what I read. You want to install the C wire if you don't want to fry your ignition box in the HVAC. It may not happen over night. But few months down the road, you might have a $400 problem. I was planning to install the nest gen3. Like you have four wires only. I have done a lot research and found that people were having issues without the C wire. Such as power cycle, odd behaviors from the nest, and a fried ignition box. I also chat with the nest support about the C wire issue, and they don't seem to give out direct answers. Just some standard script saying C wire is not required. If I were you, I would look for options getting the C wire added just to be safe.
@caseyward4091
5 жыл бұрын
I would add the C wire. Without the C wire the Nest thermostat briefly cycles power to either your heater or cooling system in order to power itself. These brief power cycles are hard on your equipment and over time will cause problems. I only had 4 wires myself, lacking a C. I bought some 5 strand thermostat wiring and will be rewiring my system. My wire run is fairly simple since it is a straight shot down into the utility room of my basement. Hook the old 4 wires just the same as they were, and then the new C wire to the C terminal on both your thermostat and heating/cooling unit.

I think Im going to take Hillboy2001's advice and look into getting a common wire. My HVAC is old and has already had some issues. If anybody system fry out it would be mine. Since Im renting I dont want the owner coming back to say hes not paying for the fix because of something I did.

you don't need a C wire, take your Fan wire and wire it to C on the nest, then MOVE fan from the furnace controller to Common, no need to wire a C, the only downfall is you won't be able to control the fan without hot or cold on, but who does that anyway.

Hi@@gunsfan4ever I have not tested this way as suggested by chris edwards but it seems like could work. The only thing is i don't want to mess with the furnace controller and it is on the roof of my condo (i don't have access to). But at one point of the conversation with the nest phone support rep. She had me temporarily put the cooling wire (yellow wire in this video) to the fan terminal of the nest (G terminal) then manually turn on/off the fan on the nest. This way at least I have cooling at home while waiting for the appointment with the nest technician to arrive (i had our appointment scheduled a few days out). Having to manually turn on and off defeats the purpose of having an automated system but i don't want to burn alive 😂
@ChrisEdwardsRestoration
5 жыл бұрын
@@gunsfan4ever , it works, your just removing a manually controlled fan wire and re directing it to be the Common, 90% of households do not have a manual fan control on the thermostat, the IFC controls fan on or off when heat or cool is needed, this is all automatic, whens the last time you just clicked "fan" to on, i did once in the last 12 years, and it really didn't do much for me. so redirecting the fan wire to be the common is fine, just label it as redirected with the included stickers in the instruction booklet and you will be just fine. there is ONE feature of the NEST on Economy mode where it will turn off your AC compressor and run the fan manually to supposedly save money but it only runs for 10 min max, so not alot of savings vs turning the unit off when cool.
