Advice from a soon to be mom of 2: -Bins inside the dresser when he’s little little. Don’t waste your life folding his clothes! By around 6mo they fit on the hanger. Hang. It. All. -Get more changing pads. Trust me. Just do it. Whip off a diaper and they pee instinctively because cold. -Diaper bag: organize a basket and keep it in the car. Open basket is way less stressful than a closed bag. -Having their first aid in the top dresser drawer is easiest. It’s all together and doesn’t get mixed up with adult stuff. -If you haven’t already, look into elimination communication. Again, trust me. -While they’re pooping the newborn black poop I really really recommend disposable diapers. I can stomach a lot but we lost 2 flats because I just could not. -Diaper basket in your room is perfect. Imo changing tables are a waste of resources, it’s way easier to change them on the bed, couch, floor, etc. -Zip up sleepers only until out of the fourth trimester, maybe a vest top onesie underneath if it’s cold. Buttons are cool until it’s 3am and you’re tired and can’t see and have to redo it 4x before it’s right. -Minimal clothes= maximum laundry. Prepare for a lot of washing. It’s really not that bad once you get into a routine!! Good luck Hannah, I’m so excited for you! Can’t wait to see the little guy when he’s here if we get the privilege ❤️

You are nailing it! I just had a baby 4 months ago and I have a few tips but you are going to do great. I love how minimal you kept it: 1. Organize baby clothes by size (not size on the tag, but how big or small they look). Trust me, it’s very annoying rummaging through piles of clothes at 2 am when all you want is to find a small pair of PJs. If you only keep the 0-3 month clothes is a little basket that could work too. That way you know anything you grab is fair game. Clothing tip- my two favourites are onesies with pants and zip up sleepers. I love loved baby! Great brand. I also really love second hand anything for babies. Makes so much more sense. Muslin is just a type of cotton FYI so they’re typically large cotton blankets. The stretchy swaddles you got will be great too. 2. Cloth diapering- I was so excited. I did research well before I even got pregnant as I was really excited about the idea of cloth but it was more complicated than I anticipated. Firstly, my baby was tiny. It took her a little while to fit into her grovia newborn diapers. Secondly, they were not getting cleaned properly due to our hard water and so they had a buildup of urine. When that happens the baby can get a horrible diaper rash. Unless your baby is chunky and upwards of 9 lbs, the grovia and bum genius AIOs won’t fit for a little while. Also, they need to be prepped about 6-8 times before using them (prepped means washes) if they are organic cotton. Cloth diapering is definitely worth figuring out but just know that almost everyone has to do some troubleshooting and when you’ve just had a baby, that’s a lot of pressure to put on yourself! So buy some seventh gen or natty eco diapers for the newborn stage if you feel it will help you :) 3. Ask for help. Let people take care of you. It takes a village and the guilt is constant but you have to let that go. Your meditation practice will really help you! 4. You got this. Trust your mama instincts. Really. Oh! Lastly. Takingcarababies. When you are exhausted and desperate for better sleep, it will change your life. 100% no crying it out, breastfeeding friendly, attachment parenting friendly methods for improving newborn sleep. My daughter slept 10-12 hours a night at 10 weeks and I 100% know that TCBs was a big part of that because before we took it she slept 2 hours at a time. That’s all! Hope this was helpful.

Awesome advice, thank you. I’m due in March and planning on doing like 80/20 cloth diapering. Another hint is to look on your local buy nothing/mom group for disposable new born diapers. Sometimes people buy too many or have big ol’ babies so they’ll give them away for free.

@@nanaronhano337 yes I anticipate this as well. She’s long and skinny. I do hope to use them eventually and I’m sure I will! We will also be moving and getting a better washing machine when she’s around 1 so I think that will also change things for us. I’m so pro cloth but found it added a lot of stress. It was not just laundry... it was rashes and stink and ammonia. But that’s because of our crazy hard water and terrible washer that adds no water.

I had a breast friend pillow made for twins and would sit in my rocking chair and nurse my son-- he'd fall asleep then just lay there and sleep forever while I rocked him without my arms ever cramping up or fixing a sliding pillow. It was SO comfortable. Eventually I'd have to get up but it clips behind you so you can walk around holding the baby and just sit back down without having to re-adjust....it was AMAZING!!! Favorite thing ever.

Hey! Certified professional doula here! I think it’s great that Ellen is going to be a support person for you with all the knowledge and experience she has! I just wanted to let you know, as a doula it’s really important for me to advocate for the doula career as a whole because a lot of people don’t take it seriously. I went through a lot of training and studying to be certified and sometimes when people just call whoever is helping them a “doula” it can downgrade certified doulas roles and training. Not offended, just wanted to pass along that information because it’s really important for us as doulas to be taken seriously! Can’t wait to meet your baby!
@breel4769
3 жыл бұрын
Honestly though, the requirements are incredibly low… it’s like 2 days of training. Ellen could probably technically be considered a doula. At minimum you need 16 hours of training and attend 2 births. Soooooo 🤷🏻♀️
@lauramartin3910
3 жыл бұрын
How do you know Ellen isn’t certified?
@rachelm7359
3 жыл бұрын
I’ve been a doula for 18 years, with multiple certifications. I feel so opposite of what you stated! I think there is value in “professional” training but also value in lay people, who have lots of experience. My grandma is one of 18, all born at home. Once she was 4, she was present at all the her other siblings birth born after that time. She was who I wanted and needed for support while birthing and she is definitely a doula and beyond! Does she need a certificate? No! Birthing and women supporting each other goes back so far and to limit definitions doesn’t make sense. That being said if someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience or certification and just self identifies, and is charging or not providing adequate education or support is another story... and I’ve seen certified doulas even do this 😅
@aliknorr2273
3 жыл бұрын
My training was much more extensive than that. And their are some trainings that don’t require as much or teach as well. But I understand all of your points. Maybe it just depends on the area I live in too. I’ve experienced so many people call themselves doulas just because they’re a friend of a birthing person. And our hospitals tend to discredit us because others will call themselves doulas and go outside our “scope” And I just don’t have positive experience with it. I also think that this is all more relevant with hospital births. But I wasn’t posting to try to start anything or discredit all of the knowledge Ellen has. I think she would be a great doula. But Hannah has a big following and I felt compelled to share my thoughts. That’s all. 💗

Hi Hannah, so excited for you! I worked at a baby care center where we supported cloth diapering, we had a mom who started with similar larger cloth wipes. I’m sure Ellen would have a lot of experience and insight, but having smaller wipes is very handy, especially for peeee. She cut up a T-shirt and it provided like 30 3x3 wipes and they were very useful, and made it so we never ran out. Also great for that final cleanup after a big mess.

So excited for you! Been quietly following you for a long time, but I’ve got to throw my unsolicited advice in because this is my favorite topic. I had a system down by the time I had #5 almost 3 years ago (we’re done now lol). 1. I got a cheap nursing rocker with footstool for baby #3 off Craigslist. Total game changer. That, combined with a good nursing pillow (which I put an additional pillow under to bring the baby right to my breast) absolutely saved my life/back during newborn and cluster feeding sessions. I’m a minimalist like you and I resisted this type of extra furniture but my solution was to sell it off again immediately after being done with it. 2. GIANT insulated and lidded straw cup. I found and still use the “reduce 50oz lidded tumbler with straw” it’s a stainless double walled mug. I needed so much ice water when first nursing. I still use it every day. It can be hard to use a typical water bottle and none of them held enough for me. 3. I second whoever suggested disposable diapers for the first few weeks. You will have so many new things to adjust to and cloth diapers can be a poor fit until the baby fills out a tiny bit. I also second the person who suggested more changing pads but even just adding a towel on top. She’s right-they pee the second you open the diaper. I anticipated this and just caught it in a basic cloth diaper (another shout out for Green Mountain diapers prefolds- can be used as burp cloths, diaper pads, and diapers!) 3. For clothing for the first several months (winter babies) I just used a long sleeved onesie with a zip up sleepsack. Made changes so easy! 4. Be ready for your hunger to come roaring back and plan accordingly for night snacks! Bars, or whatever is easy next to where you’ll nurse at night. 5. Have you considered Neville as a baby name? 😂 not actual advice I was just watching deathly hallows last night (we’re an hp obsessed family-audiobooks on all day-and I love your HP content) and I thought “that would sound so good with McNeely. I should bother her with my unsolicited opinion because if there’s one topic that people love advice from strangers on it’s baby names” 😝on that note-all four of our parents groaned!!! When we announced our first daughter’s name. They are all amazing, supportive parents so this was out of character. They now all apologize every so often because they LOVE her name (I won’t share it here, but it’s a classic name that was mostly unused at the time) and everyone they tell it to compliments my name choices...so name your baby whatever you want any don’t listen to anyone’s advice! Lastly, have an amazing labor. The moment of my first baby’s birth was the absolute best moment of my life.

Hannah you're so funny! I think that the only way you could be more last minute is if you are buying the baby items on the way to the hospital . Lol! That's the total opposite of me, I was buying baby stuff before I was even pregnant! So happy for you.:)

I made my registry minimal as well and noone even used it. They bought whatever they wanted for me and my child and didn't listen when I asked for only what was on my registry. 😔 lord bless these people though! I also just reorganized my dresser for my son (he's 3 months old). I have smaller drawers but I did night time clothes in 1 drawer, regular onesies in another drawer, and then bottoms, tops, and jackets in another. Socks are in a separate smaller drawers, too. Then diapers and extra wipes are in a drawer. :)

Also maybe don’t let Eric feed the baby until around 6 weeks when your milk levels out! It can affect your supply. There are other ways dad can bond with the baby ie can bathe or shower him xx

Do you have a PO box? I just had a baby boy 2 months ago but he grew really fast and is currently growing out of his 0-3 month stuff. I'd love to send you some of the clothes he grew out of. Most of it is either bamboo or organic cotton. (I'm vegan too by the way and have been for over 5 years now) Much love from Pennsylvania ❤️ I can't wait to watch you grow as you embark on this journey of motherhood.

I had my baby in February. Demand for cloth diapers skyrocketed when COVID hit. That's why you're having trouble. It was not like this before.

I got my cloth diapers second hand. A true zero waste way! You could see if you could find a couple on Facebook marketplace to hold you over until yours get delivered!

Lol I would never think you're a slob! I haven't been pregnant but I've watched multiple babies at once and I was lucky to get a glass of water! 😄 Good job it ain't easy!(when they're on the inside or outside!) They are wonderful though and it's all worth it!! Even after the struggles of that job I would still have my own in a heart beat!

So exciting, congratulations! I just had my second baby May 23 and I loved getting “the stuff” organized. I would get a nose Frieda instead of the bulb syringe, random suggestion 😃

Buy lots of sleep suits, quick and easy to change, newborn babies poop soo much and often the nappies leak & at 2 am you don’t have the energy to be changing tshirts and shorts. So very excited for you. You will figure out what’s best for you :-)
