You know that feeling you get when you're walking in the woods or meadow and you're subconsciously careful not to step on someone? There's a beetle crawling here, a mushroom growing there, a frog sitting there. You feel relieved when you finally reach dry sand or a rocky riverbank, because you can walk freely again. Or can you?
Of course not! Damage can be done even in such seemingly desolate places as the banks of drained ponds, gravel banks of rivers, sand pits or rocky edges of fields. Indeed, these are exactly the habitats that the little ringed plover chooses for nesting. Like other waders, it nests directly on the ground, and if we're not careful we can easily squash the nest. The four speckled eggs are so perfectly camouflaged that tracking them down is pretty difficult, even if you know for sure they must be there. So if you like to walk along the banks of rivers or ponds, be watchful and don't let your dogs run loose.
But how can you spot a nest when it is virtually invisible? Simple - watch the adult birds. The plovers may not be able to stand your presence at the clutch and will run away, but they will try their best to steer you away from the nest. They will let out a warning cry, run around on the ground nearby and try to attract attention by any means necessary. Often they will even perform a feigned wound trick - they will hang one "broken" wing to the ground and hobble clumsily away, hoping to attract a potential predator and lure it away from the eggs. So if you hear the screams of plovers in places like these and the birds start flying around you, it's wisest to just turn around and walk somewhere else. And if you happen to be worried that you won't recognize their voice, just watch today's video. Mrs. Plover will be happy to demonstrate her call :-)
