A wild female Testudo graeca graeca excavates her nest. We have had quite a lot of questions about nesting sites, and especially what kinds of substrate tend to be selected for nesting sites. This short video illustrates this very well: it is typically quite sandy and loose, infiltrated by small stones and grits. Usually (as here) a site is selected that is immediately next to, or under the cover of, a small bush or plant. It is probable that some fine roots also infiltrate the nest site, which provides some added stability. Nests are usually excavated between May and June, and the eggs will hatch as the first heavy rains arrive from mid-September to October. The bird heard calling here as she excavated her nest is a Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops) which are quite common in these dry, scrubby habitats in Southern Spain.
