The timeless Nestlé Alpine White "Sweet Dreams" Commercial from 1986 was shot in New York City by J. Walter Thompson. The style was based on the early 20th century works of American painter, Maxfield Parrish. en.wikipedia.or...
The commercial was a live-action representation of Parrish's Ecstasy, Dinky Bird, and Daybreak.
Musician/composer Lloyd Landesman created this amazing and memorable jingle. You can find this information on Lloyd's Vimeo at vimeo.com/lloyd...!
'Faith No More' did not write or record the jingle for this commercial, they merely covered it in live performances.
Maxfield Parrish Biography by Ralph Fletcher Seymour. Todd McDurmont is the first guy to appear in the commercial.
Interesting trivia:
The commercial was shot January, 1986, upper west side, New York City.
I was new to the city. I just signed with Elite Model Management.
This was my second national commercial booking.
My sequence took less than 45 minutes to shoot. I was in makeup and wardrobe longer.
The mammoth studio was cold in NYC. It was cold enough that the candy bars were brittle. So brittle in fact, you never actually see me take a bite, nor do you see the bar. We had no choice. Pieces of the bar would break off. Not too sexy!
Anyway, it was no big deal. Just another booking. Just another commercial. As a model in NYC, you book a job and move on, not realizing the impact of what was created. NAW was just one more appointment.
The commercial ran for three years and would have run longer but sources indicated (true or not) that Nestle allegedly never consulted the Maxfield Parrish estate to use the famous artwork as a backdrop. So the commercial was eventually pulled from rotation. Too bad. It was one of the biggest, most iconic commercial of the 1980's and I was very lucky to be part of history.
The success of "N.A.W." was a combination of Maxfield Parrish's art work, as a backdrop and the haunting synthesized music. It all came together is one amazing commercial. Those people at J. Walter Thompson were brilliant.
Subsequent Alpine White commercials just didn't have the magic. They all fell short of the original. This commercial is a rare among past and present TV commercials, and very stylish for the 1980's. It remains timeless! I'm glad I was a part of it.
