You probably had a better experience than manga readers then, I'd imagine. Manga readers had lofty expectations after already experiencing the story once. It was already visually impressive in terms of detail and art style, so they anticipated absolutely mind-blowing, fluid fight chorography. That's really the only value an animated version of the manga could add. The problem I find is that in order to create that value, the animators would have to have taken several liberties when it came to how fights progressed... the anime paralleled the action in the manga to a T. it was a slideshow of the manga, effective -- but to me, that suggests that the manga's action just wasn't as cool as they imagined it to be. despite how many manga reader felt while reading, the manga's chorography was not all that great. heavily bolstered by reader's imagination. had a lot of cheap flurry attacks to communicate going 'all out', a lot of attacks that are named solely for hype and not because they do anything special/unusual, etc.

Then reality hit a wall and somebody have thrown a million and tought that it would suffice to make a great animated series... damn. So many people in movie industry think that making animated movies is far easier to do than normal movies and in some aspects they are right.. but mostly not. When each frame needs to be drawn and put together and redrawn and put together again it might be a tremendous task. Especially for action oriented animations like this in which each detail is important and so is the pace of each episode. To nail it in every frame and second of this series its damn hard where action is center piece.

@@SpadeDraco I disagree. The issue is it is hard to match Adam v Zeus and Ripper v Hercules But honest to go Tesla v Belzebub was a banger about Hope for the future and despair about the past. Shiva v Raiden was a fun brawl and Qin Shi Huang vs Hades was two badasses duking it out. Has the manga not been able to reach the peak of it's most hype panels, yeah. Did it fall off? Nah both the fights and the art are still slapping most shounen out of the water.

@@yannicklarafunez4768 Ripper V Hercules is NOT a good fight. People only like it because the characters themselves are initially charming. The whole exchange is just herc repeatedly powering up (in ways that have ZERO affect on the dynamics of the fight) charging straight at him and getting clowned. Like 5 times in a row. And we're repeatedly told how underhanded Jack is being despite the fact that Jack explains to Herc exactly how his Volund works after the clock dial shenanigans thus making 3/4 of the fight completely fair. The whole thing is moronic. And that's not even getting into all the extended flashbacks that tell us things we already know about the characters.

I found it a disillusion also. I only discovered the manga a few months before there was talk of making an anime out of it, but while the manga managed to captivate me - which was surprising, since it had little to no worldbuilding, plot, story, and even characterization - the fights were just...awesome, on a unapologetic level. You know what treatment (and style) I think it should have had? Jojo's bizarre adventure. It had all the earmarks of that. Instead, we had some meager watered-down dull simulation of something that had a very vague resemblance to the manga. For something that has to have everything from its fights, it had awful fights. Which made the entire anime awful. Animations were bad, pacing was bad, the structure and representation was a mess, and the fights were crappy... nothing felt epic. Stopped watching it midway.

I don't know how much Netflix actually fronted for this anime, but your Tom and Jerry comparison got me searching to see how much one of those shorts cost to produce, which was apparently about $50k for each short. I couldn't find the exact year this sum was attributed, so I split the early years period and calculated from 1950. That's uh, ~$620k for a 7 and a half minute short, with a production time of about 6 weeks. Now, I could be crazy, but I'm pretty sure the budget for each episode of an anime is well below that figure, for an episode 3 times the length, and put out in half the time. Frankly, I'm not even remotely surprised at how bad it looks if anything I searched up real quick is remotely believable.
