I’m sorry you were ill and I’m glad you’re feeling better! Identifying as a ring was probably helpful in your recovery. This was absolutely brilliant. The historical accuracy is knocking my socks off. I’m pretty sure the same people responsible for the costumes and armour for Rings of Power are doing this show too. Will Smith’s kidnapper has definitely engineered a masterpiece here. I’m delighted to find out that there are going to be more episodes! Your picture selection to match your words was outstanding as usual! I am glad that so many people in Egypt have expressed their outrage regarding the desecration of their ancient history. now that the first episode has aired, they have a lot more legitimate complaints such as the story and, as aforementioned, the costumes, hairstyles, armour, jewelry. Thank you very much for the video! 😄🙏💐

It was pretty stupid, especially the unnecessary focus on race. They could have just told the story of Cleopatra, but instead they made it a racial thing complete with girl boss moments because Cleopatra obviously doesn't have the gravitas in her own rights. But I have one issue that keeps popping up, how does netflix have any money left? Surely after failure upon failure, they can't keep churning out utter garbage
@dronesclubhighjinks

@@letsreviewcrapwriting I know! I don’t understand how they keep finding money to produce this kind of “entertainment.“ Sometimes I wonder if Hollywood is just a big money laundering operation. That would certainly explain why major studios continue to make TV shows/movies so badly that it’s like they’re not even trying to make a profit. For example, Peter Pan and Wendy, and the animated movie Disney released on Thanksgiving weekend - it’s something to do with family and the main teen character was LGBT. They hardly even bothered to advertise it.

Cleopatras father Ptolemy XII was illegitimate and only became Pharaoh after his father and then half sister had died. Being illegitimate meant he was probably not fully Greek and likely of mixed Greek and Egyptian heritage. Cleopatra became Pharaoh upon his death. There is no record of Cleopatra’s maternal line. Neither her mother (supposedly Cleopatra V) or Grandmother is confirmed. It makes sense that her mother was mixed (African and Greek) especially as she is the only Ptolemy to learn Egyptian.
@billjacobs521
8 ай бұрын
@@David-hc4xh What you're saying is technically, possibly true. But look at the leaps you're making; her dad was illegitimate, okay, so that means he was part Egyptian? Why? There were tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of Greeks in Egypt. And the royal court has ties to Syria, the Persians, Rome, and Greece itself; it's just as likely he's mixed with one of these. Likewise, her mom isn't confirmed...so you just ASSUME she's mixed-race. Meanwhile, everything we have depicts her and describes her as pale and fair, and she came from a line that was so obsessed with purity that it was incestuous, really suggesting they probably weren't boning alot of blacks and popping out obviously mixed-race babies and putting them on the throne. Furthermore, even if she was partially Egyptian, Egyptians aren't Sub-Saharan African. Yes, there are some black people in Egypt, and yes, there have been ties to Kush and other geopolitical entities that existed in Ethiopia going back to the earliest history of Egypt, but the Coptics were fairly isolated and formed their own ethnic group over thousands of years. I mean, saying they are "black" because their ancestors 3 thousands years before the show takes place were strongly tied to Ethiopia is like calling Ashkenazi Jews "African" because their most ancient Semitic ancestors came from the Maghreb. So if she was mixed race, it'd probably be a little bit of the darker-skinned locals, not like black Africans from Eritrea. I mean, really, if she was that dark, it would have been an extremely prominent feature documented everywhere, and likely would have caused her issues in ruling her own people and dealing with neighbors, as even back that, blacks were not typically given a fair shake. So yes, it is entirely plausible that Queen Cleopatra was not 100% Greek, possibly even had some local Egyptian blood in her, but the likelihood that she was as black as Queen Latifah is virtually nil and requires one to take every possibility to it's most extreme without supporting evidence. There's a reason even the experts cherry-picked for this show didn't point to any solid evidence to support their point (and got other historical facts wrong but never mind that) and relied on "Well, maybe kinda sorta it could be this way perhaps we don't know!"
@David-hc4xh
8 ай бұрын
@@billjacobs521 I think you make some interesting points. Cleopatra indeed may have some Egyptian blood in her ancestry. Whether it makes her black or not depends on your political views on race. For example in the UK, any one of colour of African descent could be classified as black. In the US, Egyptians are legally white, regardless of skin colour.

Some people have family trees. That chart of a family 'squid' is a reminder about 'royalty' which I despise and only 'historically' can I stomach. Thank God for HBO's ROME. That Crap Writing is most entertaining and a perfectly good version of Cleopatra. No. Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra is NOT entered as a contestant with as much spectacle and fantasy as this modern version when said and done. Cripes! The maternal line of Cleopatra has not been proven at all with some suggesting her mother was Cleopatra V, making her 3/4 Greek and 1/4 African. There is a plethora of evidence; studies, iconography, accounts from Romans, Greeks and archaeological finds to support the fact that ancient Egyptians were black. DNA of Egyptians today have sub-saharan DNA.

My biggest complaint with the series is that, if one closes one's eyes, one could imagine the dialogue coming out of a "Dynasty-like" series of the 21st century. The script is unconvincing (although the historians they use in the documentary moments are very knowledgeable) and paint a more convincing portrait of the era. The acting is similarly flat, I'm sorry to say. So far, there is no one who comes across as convincing, and her father saying - on his deathbed - "I don't trust any of them" - is decidely an unlikely manner of speaking 2500 years ago. Cleopatra sounds similarly like a 21st century citizen, unsophisticated and ordinary in speech. Ditto Julius Casear and all the advisors. It is disappointing that Jada Pinkett-Smith okayed this script in favor of one which had amore convincing dialogue, consonant with the speech of Egyptian/Roman era. This is in direct contrast tothe Netflix series 'The Diplomat' which has absolutely scintillating writing and pacing (the actors in Cleopatra speak much too fast, another trait of 21st century speaking, which I highly doubt happens in, say, Shakespearian plays). Arsinoe reminds me of Fallon in Dynasty: the child with a 'chip on the shoulder.' And Julius Caesar has met Cleopatra for all of 15 minutes before he is in a kissing scene with her. WHAT is the rush?!? Drawing it out so that they banger for one episode would seem more in keeping with two world power jousting with each other for advantage, probing each other's weaknesses. And monarchs would not need to not speak fast: they have all the time in the world and everyone hangs on their every word, so the dialogue should be paced MUCH more slowly, which would give "authority" to every word they utter. It seems that the dialogue is tailored to the short-attentionspan-crowd, for whom everything happens in 160 characters (text messaging). It causes the series to lose its "gravitas" and, as I said, and rush, rush, rush.Most scenes sound like something out of Dynasty: someone utters a pithy "screw you" line, pivots and walks out of the scene. One sincerely doubts that ancient times were like this. Everything in the series has a 21st century "feel" to it. It is pleasant enough, but not particularly engaging. I'll leave all the ethnic battles to those who care more about that than a good screenplay, and excellent acting skills.
