The third (and last for the year 2020) virtual, socially-distanced Neukölln Klezmer Session!
25 musicians (or so) and a singing trapeze dancer join together for an epic collaboration on our dear friend and colleague Michael Alpert’s timeless Yiddishland anthem “Klaybt zikh tsunoyf” (“Gather Together”).
This song has always been special to us, but even more in these days. The lyrics (which you can see below in English) speak of the joy of being together as family, even though we may come from different worlds, cultures, and backgrounds, and about how sweet it is to sit with friends around a table. Strong words always, but even more poignant now.
For an ending, we added the first two sections of a lovely bulgar named “Rumania,” as recorded by the great clarinetist Dave Tarras on his classic album “Tanz!”. It’s a fitting, joyful way to end this last virtual Neukölln jam of the year.
This time we finally got a real professional to edit the video for us! Film-maker and photographer Magdalena Hutter has been our friend and comrade for many years, and we thank her for her hard work from the tips of our toes!
This video was premiered during the Shtetl Berlin 2020 Online Festival of Yiddish Culture. To learn more about the festival, please visit www.shtetlberlin.com

KLAYBT ZIKH TSUNOYF (Gather Together)
Words and music by Michael Alpert, written in 1983.
ENGLISH
Gather together, sisters and brothers,
And let's rejoice that we're Jews.
Enough crying with wounded hearts,
We're bound together like family!
Though I've come from across the world,
You are dearer to me than anything else.
So let's live it up 'til the break of day
With heartfelt songs & full bottles of wine.
To make a toast with friends, oh, it's sweet.
When songs are sung, the feet tap along.
A drink with strangers is also good,
But with friends, it's sweet, like with family.
A shot of booze can be a real treat,
But to sing a song is truly sweet.
So sing along, dear comrades,
And forget your worries and troubles.
In this world of wrongdoing and bloodshed
It's easy to stray from our true goals.
In such a world, many become lost.
I do too, sometimes, until I remember:
That happiness depends on oneself,
And our fortunes lie in our own hands.
So join in this song, dearest friends,
And let your hearts take courage from it.
