It's crazy when you think about all of the things people spend this kind of money on and then bawk at spending it on a microphone. People will spend $5k+ on a TV but not $1500 for a top of the line preamp.

It’s perceived value I think. Think of all the things that TVs do now, plus the range of entertainment it can give you. A microphone is still just a thing that captures sound waves in a way that other equipment can make use of, no matter how many valves and doobliedoos it has in it.

Well put. After I got the 103, I put it head to head with my Rode NT1a. For a lot of uses like singing, and voiceover, the far cheaper Rode would be perfectly usable. For KZitem, and most home studio use, the Rode does a great job, with zero complaints. Careful EQ and a decent interface will get you very good vocal recordings with the Rode. The difference, with the 103, has to do with undeniable smoothness in the highs and much clarity in the low end. I have always struggled to find mics that make my (somewhat quiet) singing voice sound balanced. The Neumann simply makes me ecstatic, EVERY single time I listen back to the recordings. It never gets old.

I love this mic. I bought it when it came out about 20 years ago (mine is a nickel plate). Best all-rounder. Spend the money on the shock mount, it's worth it. Yeah it's expensive, but short of the higher end Neumann's, This is really a sweet spot for a truly professional mic. Nice review.

For years I thought I would never get a TLM 103 or other mic over $700. But then I spent several years listening to my own voice and realized that the grate in it sometimes hurts my ears, couldn't fix it through mic technique, processing, or any of the other mics I tried, and then on a whim listened to an old promo I recorded on a client's TLM 103. The grate in my voice sounded sexy. My volume and pitch spikes didn't make me flinch. The low end didn't sound overbearing to the point that it made my voice sound fake. Alack, I really want a TLM 103 now, paired with a couple of other very expensive pieces of gear that I don't need. I shall make the most of what I currently have in order to fund it all~ Thank you for your thorough reviews! The 103 is a very useful microphone, and a very reasonable entry to the world of Neumann. I hate to sound like a broken record, but you will use this microphone as long as you live, and with great success. It is unlikely to appreciate like higher priced Neumanns but that’s a really minor issue. I can’t think of any use that disappointed in the least with this. Expensive?? Imagine how many cheaper mics you've bought, used for a while, and then put on the shelf when you've come across another one that's more enticing at the moment? How much would all those mics add up to? Whereas the 103 is a mic for life. It's different than a U87ai you also bought for $3K+; but it's not necessarily _worse._ You'll never regret having both. Whereas, you could keep them, a pair of SDSs, a handheld dynamic and a broadcast dynamic, and then sell _all_ your other mics, and never really miss them.

Great video, beautiful mic for sure! Trialled one of my buddies and it's just classy, particularly on more soulful vocals (I'm a topline singer across many genres..) BUT!!.... test drove it on a more gnarly explosive vocal take, you know gritty hard rock where the vocal smashes in at high velocity with some YELPS for good measure,... Chris Cornell (Obv a dollar store version from moi LOL) meets Dave Lee Roth kinda!! ... my comparison mic was an SM58 and was def. my preference for that particular Hard Rock track!! Sat better in the mix, softer edges on the sibilance ... then I compared it to my SE Gemini, the TLM wasn't that different, maybe slightly smoother on the top end but not much in it!! ... at this point I was sonically confused so had a nap! Guess my rambling point is different mics for different applications...and a subjective preference!! Keep up the good work sir! :)

Sounds great (as one would hope). It may be interesting to pit this one against the likes of Rode NT1 (maybe NT1a and NT-USB, too), AT4040 or AT2035 to name a few. Incidentally, the TLM103 is almost 20 years old at this point, and several more modern models actually boast an even higher dynamic range (AKG C414 XLII/XLS: 8 dB(A) min, 140 dB max, AKG C4000B: 8 dB(A) min, 145 dB max, just too bad the C4000B appears to be rather colored and it's discontinued to boot). That said, it still is very good. Looks like the TLM102 has very similar electronics with a capsule that's about 5 dB less sensitive.

Love my TLM 103 for Voiceover. Find it too bity on your electric guitar. For acoustic guitar I prefer an old C414EB.

I have the two modern C414’s and the amount of gushing I’ve heard over the vintage C414’s I’ve looked at them, and some of them are sold for so much I just can’t justify it.

Please review the SE Electronics Z5600a II. I don't find much about it in the internet.

Do you cover your microphones (with plastic bags or mic sleeves) when they're not in use? I just recently got the TLM103 and was wondering what you use to keep them away from dust.

At 2:35 is your gain not set at 2 as opposed to 7? The DI knob is at 7 - you're going into the XLR (Mic) which is 2 no?

Hello, Which mic stand do you use in your video? I was interested in the Ultimate MC125 but I have the impression I will not be able to to put the top part of the mic sky side.

Sound wise, the 103 and U-87 are not that much different.
