Hi Dimitri, I've been following you roughly for a month, and I'm enjoying your videos tremendously! Thanks for sharing the insight of the industry so transparent as possible! As many other people I could use some advice of career path's. Currently I'm studying economics, and I'm planning to take my bachelors degree next year. And thinking of either proceeding towards a Data Science Masters programme or Economics Masters programme with Econometrics specialization. Which is more advantageous when trying to become a quant?

In my opinion the number one skill is statistics. I would look at the courses for the two degrees and see which one has more statistics and mathematics. When in comes to data science degrees, I'm always cautious because there are a lot of programs who skip the hard math in favor of just learning pieces of code.

Hey Dmitri, The video was very interesting, even if I couldn't grasp everything because my knowledge of mathematics isn't quite there yet. I was wondering if you could answer a question about college for me? I'm hoping to get into Temple University for a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, if I wanted to get into the "quant" field after college, which would be a more beneficial minor: statistics or finance? My aspirations are to minor in both, but maybe I won't be able to. Also, do you have any thoughts on Temple University? I've heard that they're known for their business college. Thanks again, your videos are very concise and informative and I found your journey of a career insightful to what I might be able to do with mine. Keep up the great work, and your channel will continue to grow =)

I was once interested in the same field so I got some advice from an ex BAML, Tower Research Capital quant while I was in high school. He told me most of the 'Finance Stuff' can be learned at work so it's by no means essential to take courses on it. He said it's rather important to have a solid math and statistics background with a respectable programming skill. Temple University is most known for it's Insurance program and I haven't heard much about other disciplines. Also top firms require a degree from high ranked university so you might want to think about doing a PhD in a top university. Let's see what Dimitri thinks though.

@@coreanoquant Yeah, unfortunately I dont have the credentials to get into a more prestigious school for undergrad, but I'm hoping to transfer into one for graduate school. Is a masters worthwhile? Or is going straight into a PhD a better path? Edit: didn't realise Dimitri already made a video about PhDs

sigmoid function or logistic, same thing i believe. this network is capable of optical character recognition too

Yes they are the same. There are a bunch of activation functions and structural changes you can made to increase the complexity. From what I've read convolutional neural networks are good for image processing.

That's awesome! Can I know which book to refer for this mathematics?

I referenced a variety of books and websites as well as tested it against code. A good book to reference though is, "Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning" by Bishop. If you are looking for a free resource check out "Deep Learning" by Goodfellow, Bengio, and Courville. www.deeplearningbook.org/

Hi Dimitri, as a quant, what programming language are you using in your job right now

I wish instead of an excel sheet that you had a diagram of the neural network with all the neuron and connection weight values displayed.

Dimitri This formual in A9 absolutely refuses to work for me =MMULT(B2:D4,F2:G4)+H2:I2 with or without open / closing curly braces or any combination of parenthesis. I have copied it from your video. I also tried to access the file from your google docs but tells me I need permission. I just wanted to look at the formulas. Actually this worked: =MMULT(B2:D4,F2:G4) in cell A9 but when I add the bias the formula just gets copied seemingly as text in the cell

@@DimitriBianco Got it. THANKS! I worked around the problem bu just using regular multiplication and addition formulas and everything worked. But now I can look at your files and compare with what I did. BTW quality explanation and enjoy viewing. Everything is clear for us vision impaired and the voice is articulate.

Realistically, fuck you. Dmitri has worked so hard to make this an easy explanation and you completely shit on his greatness. Dmitri works at 2sigma as a quant and makes 700k a year you just sit there in your mothers basement playing league of legends with your ass-like brain.
