This brief commentary answers the question of whether or not neuropsychological tests of executive functioning (EF) are necessary for or useful in the diagnosis of ADHD. It provides a summary of the evidence against the use of such tests due to their low accuracy at detecting the disorder, low correlation with ADHD symptoms, and limited if any relationship to predicting impairment in major life activities. Clinicians should stop using EF tests as the basis for diagnosing ADHD.
