If someone asks what "post-metal" is, I just show them this clip. It is everything that subgenre should be. It has the punk attitude, the doom-inspired crashing and crushing heaviness, it has the post-rock light passages, it has the meditative but mildly disturbed atmosphere...all these bands, from Isis and early Intronaut to the more melodic stuff like Pelican, The Ocean, and Russian Circles, would not be here without Neurosis. And none of them have played it more intensely. While they go for the spacey vibes and mellow tones, Neurosis is an out-of-body experience of pain. A pain so exquisite, so mind-numbing, that it becomes transcendental. A pain that makes you touch God.

I don't think I'll ever understand how Neurosis made it into the bill for Ozzfest '98. Every other band their was either Ozzy, Slayer, or something that sounded like Coal Chamber or Sevendust. And here we are with *proper* metal, ripping everyone's faces off in the middle of the Summer at the Glenn Helen Pavilion (now the Honda Center at Glenn Helen) in San Bernadino. This, and Sepultura were the highlights of the entire tour.

The date I saw did not have Slayer or Sepultura (though Max was in Soulfly at this point, so their peak had past) - we had like, Marilyn Manson and Pantera. Other than that, really a shit show of bands like Powerman 5000 and Coal Chamber, etc. Neurosis really were a highlight - though Type O Negative were also a good live band per usual and reunited Black Sabbath were pretty unfuckwithable, even though it took hours of waiting through everything else to get to them.

it was a very long time ago though, more than 30 years. however, his past of self abuse, heavy drugs and rough life caught up with him. He stared the abyss long enough that finally he couldn't hold it anymore. He became himself what he feared the most. He has to pay for his action, but I understand the reason behind what he did. Do you think that all those songs wrote themselves? they came for a very very dark place unfortunately.

Heaviness is a great thing, but metal being 'heavy' is never what attracted me to it, it has always been the emotions and atmospheres that metal can conjure up, and the DARKNESS of it. Neurosis make fucking dark music, that creeps into you, and although heaviness can aid the process of creating 'dark' music, these deathcore bands need to learn that it is not the only way to make dark and bleak music, or at least transferral of emotion to the listener

There are few songs where the studio version can't capture the emotion and raw power of how it's played live. This is one.

@EyesofNeurosis A band can only take the style of being aggressive and in your face for so long before it starts to get old and Neurosis knows this.So for the sake of their own musical sanity's they tapped into a new sound and exploration of musical ideas that a lot of artists today would never dream of or are daring enough to do.They have pretty much found a middle ground where atmosphere and aggression can co-exist and I completely support their future endeavors with this sound
