It's a photo by Simon Marsden, depicting a statue from Toddington Manor, Gloucestershire, England. I've read somewhere around the web that it represents Thomas Becket. It has been used in several bands artworks (Kult Of Azazel, Elysium, Animal Hate, Neurosis, Darkland, Mon'strum) and you can see it in the opening of Dracula Dead And Loving It

The song from the beginning is also featured throughout a horror movie from the mid-80's called Crawlspace. It has Klaus Kinski (always crazy and awesome) in it as a crazy landlord/Nazi doctor that kills college kids. Pretty heady stuff. The song is credited as "Hebrew Lament"

Now that we're enlightened about the singer of this version of the lament in the beginning, I wonder if anybody knows about the origins of this lament. As someone already noted, a (different) version has been used for the soundtrack of "Crawlspace"(1986). In the credits it's called "Hebrew Lament" (performed by Alessandra Moscati). In the tracklist of the soundtrack composed by Pino Donaggio it's called "Martha's Lament". Are these classical hebrew lyrics? I didn't find anything so far...

No, the album credits just state that she provided additonal vocal parts, but doesn't say where. Anyway, I listened to the album today again and, in the song Lexicon, I think I can hear some sort of vocals, sounds more like kind of moaning, and it could be this Erika Little. If it is, it doesn't necessarily have to be her in the intro of Raze The Stray... the mistery is getting thicker by the minute. I'll turn the internet inside-out and I'll get back to you if I find anything out!
@Pleurotus
15 жыл бұрын
Maybe so. What I really mean is that, only because they don't have a guest vocalist when they perform the song live, it doesn't mean that they couldn't have one in the studio when they recorded it. Also, since you seem sure of the fact that it's not a vocalist but a sample, could you indicate me where else in the record I can hear this phantomatic Erika Little singing? It is probable that they just like sharing album credits with friends and relatives but, again, I might be wrong...

Let's talk a minute about the meaning of the song, it's amazing, but there is a very specific point to it all. The idea of what it is to 'raze' or burn to oblivion. I feel like they were ahead of their time to a degree but it's important to understand the environment this comes from. Oakland in the early 90s was dark, dirty and drug ridden; meth and crack being god. That is the world this emerged from, the old Phoenix Ironworks became a utopia for groups such as this and that dirty drug induced darkness is pure here in a way that only one from Oakland can understand. The longing in your heart for transcendence, the ultimate goal for all who partook of Oakland and the Phoenix Ironworks abandonment of the time.

Mmm... I believe DrSrdvid is right. It's not a sample. I think they recorded it with a guest vocalist, some Erika Little, her name's in the album credits. And, since there's no other song on the whole record with female vocals, then it must be this one. But I might be wrong....
