Hike around Neuschwanstein Castle in the Allgäu: From the Alpsee over the Pöllat Gorge to the Marienbrücke and to the viewpoint on the Tegelberg Mountain.
Have you ever visited Neuschwanstein Castle? If so, how did you like it? Maybe you were even inside? Share your experiences in the comments.
I'm very excited as we approach the castle. From below I look up in awe. We'll be in Schwangau in a moment and then I'll take a closer look at the castle, which could have sprung from a Disney film. But first it's off to the Alpsee.
The lake, which is not far from Hohenschwangau Castle, is one of the coldest bathing lakes in Germany. It's not particularly warm on the day of my visit anyway. Nevertheless, there is a bit of a bathing feeling. At least I would like to march barefoot into the waters. The wind makes it look like waves are rolling towards the shore. And even if, of course, you can't feel the vastness that you have by the sea and there is no salty water in the air, it reminds you a little of the coast.
Then we continue to the entrance of the Pöllat Gorge, over which we want to climb to the castle. But as soon as we reach the water we see that the hiking trail through the gorge is closed. The path through the gorge would run along the rock the whole time and you could always keep an eye on the wild water. So we have to change the plan at short notice and take the normal route up. In theory, you could go up there in a horse-drawn carriage.
Finally we stand in front of it and I am amazed at the castle that looks so modern. It almost looks like a set that was only set up for a film. It glows colorfully with the autumn trees. It is surrounded by imposing rock walls. The location of the castle is awesome. But you should have the best view from the Marienbrücke.
We pass souvenir stands and we make a short detour to the entrance of the castle. By the way, you have to buy tickets for the visit below. Neuschwansteinn Castle is also not that old. In the 19th century it was built by King Ludwig II on the model of an idealized knight's castle. Nowadays it is much more of a tourist attraction.
We have to queue at Marienbrücke. Many visitors want to enjoy the view and we have to wait for our turn. In return, you can look out over the washed-out basin of the Pöllat Gorge from the bridge and observe the castle from a distance. It's a great perspective for photos.
We follow the hiking trail towards Tegelbergkopf for 20 to 30 minutes up through the autumn forest. Then we come to a great view from above. And best of all: the higher we hike, the fewer people are on the trail.
We stop at a great view point. It's going down steeply. So we have to be careful. But the view is worth climbing the few meters further. Because we now look over the Allgäu Alps, see Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein below us and look at the Alpsee, the Schwansee and the Forggensee, which can be seen between Füssen and Schwangau.
We visited the Forggensee at the end of the day at sunset. That's another really nice mood.
