The Donnelly River near Manjimup in Western Australia’s southwest, is a magnificent fresh water river and lifeblood of the local ecosystem. Rainfall in WA’s southwest has been declining for decades, and that’s why in 2019 the revelation of plans to dam the river and sell its water - the Southern Forests Irrigation Scheme - was met with fierce opposition. For several years now groups such as Save Our Donnelly River Association and Don’t Dam the Donnelly have actively campaigned to stop the SFIS from destroying the river, which needs all its winter water flow to survive the hot summers and sustain the people, forests, birds, animals and plants that call it home.
