@@lukewatson059 Yes it won't have direct impact, but as louis rossman says it's not just right to repair that's going to fix all the problems it's the consumers who will make a change. If parts are available more easily then more people would be intrested in fixing their devices or getting them fixed as repair costs and time will be lower. Once that happens people when buying a new product will consider reparability too which will slowly force companies to make their products more repairable. It's a chain of events and right to repair is first step towards it.
@3Clod

fact is the technology involved is very delicate there and the device needs to be secured from curious customers who would damage it and then just trash it (thus dealing even more pollution) or complain the product is crap because it didn't whitstand the blows of their jackhammer. Apple's policy has always been dedicated to protecting their product knowing the average consumer can't be trusted, so if anything doesn't work it's due to their engineers and they can control the evolution in a more efficient way. I tried to change a battery from one ipad once, following a thorough tutorial and was very careful yet... the wifi didn't work anymore. I'm sure I didn't touch anything wrong and yet the device was suddenly trash.

A few things, 1. you could probably repair the smart connector, might be a bit shoddy but worth a shot IMO. 2. don't be afraid to heat the battery up, you can also use a paint scraper, or a thing metal spatula to cut the adhesive, it's done frequently and has been discussed 1000 times, it works, i would use an iflex. 3. you're missing a plastic spacer for the home button. I would've super glued the metal disc. When I do home button's on ipad I also apply a bead of B7000 around the bracket, helps keep it in after heavy use (read: kids) 4. the magnets, you could've sacrificed the original casing by deforming it and you would've been able to remove all the magnets, as well as extreme heat, like 150-250C. 5. the adhesive on the wifi cables is a TERRIBLE idea, if it ever gets opened up again it's a mess, especially when it wasn't there to begin width and hasn't been standard since the ipad 2. 6. electrical tape looks weird, Kapton tape would be an appropriate solution. 7. There is a 3M brand adhesion promoter people use for a really good seal, while no necessary for the frame, i would advise to use it for the home button bracket, and switch to the tesa black adhesive, instead of the red, it's thinner and holds on a bit better.

There's a special place in hell for the Apple engineers that signed off on the stupid & difficult to repair design of this iPad.

@@Flandz420 Apples hardware innovation is only on the chip designing. Rest all so called innovations are Creating problems by them and solving it to make profit, Like removal of headphone jack, Next lighting port Then updates will be subscription based in future 😂

I really enjoy your videos. Your standards are just amazing and stand by similar ones when trying to repair my stuff. Every store I know will not take their time to use adhesive for displays, will miss you screws, and are overall mediocre.

I think Apple engineers are between a rock and a hard place, they need to make it too hard for third party repairers but not so hard that their techs can’t fix them. If in doubt add more glue and you can bet your boots they have the perfect solvent that releases the glue in seconds. Great repair.

I've done quite a few full housing and display replacements before and heating is your friend when it comes to iPad glue. heating up the rear housing slowly usually a hot air gun at spots that you are trying to remove the parts from loosens the glue enough to nearly peal a way the components.

Would be interesting if you could find an Tab S7 or so for repair and comparing its repairability...

I just finished one of these today took 25 minutes. Very easy repair. Heat it up with a hair dryer and the glue comes loose easy if you can touch it without burning your hands its not hot enough yet. The prying on the battery will shorten its life a lot. Poke a hole in it with a tool and it can catch fire. Ask me how I know with the burn scars to prove it. I do this everyday all day though. It’s better to go on eBay and buy a complete housing with all the small parts and pieces already installed. Switch the battery and the circuit board and put it back to together.

watching this ipad in this state makes my heart ache... me and the previous owner of my iPad 4 gen have been insanely careful with it, I can't imagine why would someone take poor care of their devices

I agree that you would have to have a lot of alcohol to remove the battery. I’d have been drinking all the way through the whole process! But I think it’s great that you are able to persist with this kind of restoration and possibly shaming Apple for the way that they try to put off repairs on their products. Top job 👍

I always used hot air blower for glued in ribbons makes it easy. I have retired from fixing tech sick of apple locking components via software.. So much easier to garden!!!

Love your videos Hugh. Any recommendations for buying a phone on a budget here in the States? I have an iphone 6s plus that is finally trying to die on me. If I buy something from you, would it work over here?

I bought a cover for my apple iPad but it wouldn’t switch on or off the tablet. I figured out what was wrong. The magnet in the cover was the wrong polarity. I waved a strong magnet over it and it changed its polarity and it works fine now. Hugh, before you take out magnets on these iPads mark them with a felt marker first so the polarity will be right. That’s why they probably dident work for you.
