I have extremely sweaty hands (palmar hyperhidrosis) and I've been lifting since 2021. Imagine lifting with zero grip because the dumb-bell or barbell constantly slips and rolls around in your hand even when you're giving it your all to grip the weight. Due to "gym cred" and not wanting to look like a "pussy," I've never worn gloves. This led me to injuring my wrists because all the weight carries onto my wrist as the bar loses control in my palms(slipping and sliding). I've tried chalk and liquid chalk, it doesn't work(imagine chalk turning into white mud in your palms when lifting). Recently this year, I decided to give in on being looked down upon from wearing gloves and got me some gloves. My lifting experience has changed tremendously. Less prone to injury and better quality of lifting. In conclusion, maturing in the gym is to not care what others think and do what is best for you. At the end of the day, you are in there for YOU, not them.

Don’t worry mate I’ve also kicked my ego to the side and start using gloves for my sweaty hands. My gains from pull ups have been dog shit because our grip gives out waaaaay before the lats ever will. And sweaty palms makes us overcompensate the grip leading to them tiring out more and quicker and leading to injuries like tendonitis or making carpal tunnel worse. This goes for a lot of Lats back exercises. The grip will give out first before you feel that burn in the lats. Hangs with gloves vs Hangs with sweaty palms is a big difference. Pull ups too

@@user-ve8pl2eq8q I went to a dermatologist. It’s actually a pretty simple self diagnosis as well. If your hands are consistently pouring out sweat and even other parts of your body such as feet, armpits, etc, then you probably have hyperhidrosis. Other reasons may be that you have a hyperthyroid problem or diabetes but that’s why you need to see a doctor for blood work. If you struggle with shaking people’s hands, steering when driving, writing, or even typing as we speak, you most likely have palmar hyperhidrosis.

You will of course get some calluses but you can peel them of carefully with a blade or a scrubber. There are also loads of skincare products for climbers that losen up the skin, making it tough but still flexible. Cracking occurs when the skin is thick but stiff.

@@l_fieldy6635 Liquid chalk is the best thing for deadlift. It's like 10 bucks for a 250ml bottle, and you only need to use a drop about the size of a large pea each session so the bottle will last you a couple years. Depends how much you're deadlifting, but if it's 180kg+ I'd def recommend chalk. Also if you attempt to pull above that weight with gloves on, you'll quickly come to understand the real reason why people recommend not using them. It has little to do with soft hands, the real problem is that leather/fabric material against a metal bar is about as slippery as skin to begin with. Gloves protect your hands, but they don't reduce grip failure due to slippage in the least. Chalk on the other hand pretty much completely eliminates slippage. Your grip will only fail with chalk as a result of actual forearm muscle failure.

1. You fix callouses with proper grip technique and grip strength 2. Gloves reduce grip strength, and they tend to make it harder to feel how your skin folds on the bar, so they thend to make the callouses worse 3. To lift weight exceeding your proper grip strength, use straps. Though it would be better to improve your grip form/strength. The standard deadlift record stands at 460.4kg (1015lbs). There is tremendous grip strength potential in all of us, far more than we will ever physically lift. If you need to use straps, incorporate grip strength specifically in your training, so one day you wont need to.

Gloves increase effective diameter of the bar making it harder to hold on to. It also reduces grip security because no piece of loose stuff between your hand and the bar will make grip better

I had to get gloves because the pull up bar at my last gym didnt have any texturing or grips on the pull up bar. One molecule of sweat and it was a slip and slide.

Why do people think lifting without gloves is a flex? It's not
@NotMyAccount

It would become a limiting factor. For example I wrap my fists before bone strengthening them by punching a wall because with my fists wrapped I can hit about 70-80 times before my skin starts to bleed. Without my fists wrapped I can only do about 20 reps

Imagine being stupid enough to unironically tell people not wear gloves while handling heavy steel bars with grooves etched into them. My guy why would you NEED tougher hand skin when you could just wear a second skin over your hands? Just makes no sense

I use them over winter as the cold weather tears my hands up even when I'm not lifting. Personally I prefer the grip without them but no issue in protecting your hands.

You don't get calluses that bad if you hold the bar properly. It's the bar sliding against or pinching the skin that causes them.

My job causes many abrasive callouses to form on my hands, for this I use men's lotion often, like 2-4 times a day just consistently rubbing it in. For the most part it keeps my callouses smooth and operable.

tbh if I were to go to gym, I’d rather not sacrifice softness of my hands. It is kinda cool but I don’t think my potential family would enjoy the sandpaper of a touch, there are other things that show the masculinity better than rough palms like shoulders, biceps and other more visible areas

I was very into powerlifting for a lot of my life, and have similar looking hands… I havent deadlifted anything in probably a decade, and they still look like that. Once they reach a certain point, it doesnt matter how much you moisturize them or cut them off with nail clippers (thats how I manage it), they just come back. It actually really sucks sometimes because if they get pinched wrong it feels like you’re trying to make a fist with a needle in your palm.

(You probably have but) try soaking your hands in warm water til the skin softens and carefully scraping the skin with a blade or similar tool. It will grow back but should be manageable.

If you arent going to wear gloves, you need to start shaving down your calluses with a file or sumn shii because the bigger the calluses get, the more often they rip. Its counter - intuitive but when you think abt it, it makes sense. Wear gloves or dont, its up to you in the end.
