I have 3 kids at home and married and my district manager at the time basically was telling me I needed to be there like 12 to 13hrs a day for like 6 days a week. I got on other employees for not doing their part and it's still my fault for their actions cause I was the manager!! Hey, you can drag a horse to water but you can't make it drink!!! Sue for overtime and backpay. FLSA states that to be qualified as exempt your job must be majority office work. They were sued multiple times in 2010 and lost every case. The company steals between 12k to 35K from every store manager every year. Check with an employment lawyer, even if you are no longer with the company you should still be able to sue for what they owe you. Our DM promotes SM based on how well he thinks they can work truck meaning he's intentionally setting them up to get taken advantage of and he is aware of it. I mention this to most store managers I meet. Depending on how long you've been with the company as a SM but you might remember SMs having to clock in and out for a time, this was in response to the lawsuits. After sufficient time had passed they left SMs clocked in and soon after required 48 hrs for all SMs, though not necessarily internally as I noticed when our SM was on leave we only received 40 extra hours, about a year later we started receiving 48.

I worked as a sales associate for 3 years. Started out making $7.25/hr. Worked 12 hour shifts 5-6 days a week (we were only open for 14 hours a day). No free time. Any days I had off I usually got called in because of a no call no show. One time I was abandoned by everyone else so they could go get matching tattoos and I had to work the Saturday night rush myself. Always got sent to other stores that were short staffed or were being remodeled. The most miserable company to work for. I had to beg them to allow me to leave for a funeral for my grandma and agree to work 7 days in a row after I got back ( we were talking 3 days off max.) By the time I finally had enough and quit I was making...$7.75/hr. How that company has not been investigated for the way it treats it's employees is beyond me.

I love shopping at Dollar General, but have lately been reading about the problems within the company, regarding proper store staffing, especially. This is a very wealthy company, and they could afford to have more employees working at the same time, so shelves would not look picked over, and the store wouldn't be such a mess. I give all the props to the managers and employees who have to deal with this nonsense. With that said, I want to mention that the employees of "my" DG, where I usually shop, are sweet, friendly, and helpful. I adore them. I think the manager, Amanda, is really good at what she does, and makes the best of tricky situations. Thanks for posting this! Glad you got out, and I pray your new business is doing well! 💖

They leave their trash everywhere and steal us blind. DG doesn't care about the security problems either. But all those empty shelves... No fault of the new SM that was doing her training and then on a vacation to get the rest of her belongs ~1200 miles away....Where is corporate in all this to assist in maintaining their stores??? I've noticed the company is looking for 23 ASM's within a 15mile radius...along with just about every other position in each store! I shop at DG weekly and have noticed carts & U-boats on just about every endcap regularly, some of which are overstock carts, not for new planograms or re-shops. For the fact that I've worked retail in the past...I get the struggle! I have wanted to help on occasions, especially when the item I'm looking for isn't on the shelf!!! Amen to that one. Totally agree. Every person has to be on board in order for the store to succeed. The SM basically has to micromanage each person to make it happen. The DM has to be a bit involved, too. The stores are definitely hard to maintain. But, look at mine: I'm in about as bad of an area as they come. I still manage 250 outs or less and one RT of TONS on average during scan weeks. But it's a 70-hour involvement to keep it that way. Even with those so-called SWAT hours. About to move onto something worthwhile myself.

New reply, a year later. We have a new manager at our store, as our old manager was put into another store. It is now a nightmare! If the manager doesn't do their job the whole store will go to hell. Our backroom is so packed all the time that we can't get to our breakroom or the rear emergency exit except maybe one or two days a week. The manager does need to direct and micromanage stocking procedures. Saying "work freight" is not enough. I hate my job now.

So glad the DG I work at is a smaller one, I would not be able to handle a store that size, my feet hurt enough at the end of the day.. but dude every stock room is that bad, I blame our truck drivers honestly, every day I leave the store the back is clean and organized, I come back after truck and it's a mess, it's normal and it sucks..

I work for DG, the store I work at I am a keyholder for is actually really clean. It took a long time from what I''m told but if you are anywhere higher than an associate you should work as a team. Remember it's not just you who can make it better it requires your whole team working and striving to fix the problems.

At least you have a stock room. lol. Ours is half of that stock room. Only time it looks that full is on truck day. Sorry this is such a crap store. You really need people dedicated to work. if you don't have a good team to do exactly what you say as a manager then you will dig yourself into a hole. I love the work but not the pay. I love doing stock. I love seeing an empty stock room and clean floor. what I hate is that everyone buys product out so quickly. lol and the customers that make a mess every where. drives me up the wall. lol.

Ive been a SM for DG for 6 years and basically been a fixer with a stores that looked like this..BUT the end result makes it worth it...the problem with most SM is that they want to put the work into fixing the stores and retraining the employees. Most has an avg of 7 employees so you should never expect for the store to be ready...but some of the trashy stores you see is or was on the store managers.

After working at a dollar store called Just A Buck for 4 almost 4 years was terrible. Not my first job though but it wasn't the best. I had until the end of January of 2017 to leave that job and to find another and I was like nope not going to spend 3 more months of this. Despite the fact I was a hard worker my pay was low. Got in trouble for helping my own best friend in which both of us got in trouble for. Even my own best friend was getting paid more then I was and he was still new. Of course I'm not mad at him but at my own job. I know some people will say it's just a job well let's just say after my experience there never going to work at another dollar store job ever again. I'm happy with the job I have now.

Just putting some more information out there: Sometimes dollar general has a company called drive line come out and do resets on the shelves. This is often only for specific products, but if you have someone from driveline that doesn't care they will ruin your other spots and it will cause even more confusion. I once had someone from driveline destroy our entire laundry section and just left it in a bunch of carts because they didn't want to put the product back. If dollar general had driveline handle ALL resets and not just some, and really held them accountable, the shelf pricing wouldn't be nearly as bad. Next I will comment on the stocking issues. I never got to a level where I saw or dealt with the trucks that would come as far as records go, but there seems to be an absolutely massive amount of over stock at all times. If you work at one of the smaller buildings with less room in the back and on the sky shelves you are screwed. Even in the bigger buildings the backs are almost always full. The moment you start to get some headway, you are bombarded with more stock, and the cycle continues. Our staff just cannot keep up with all of the new seasonal items, NCI home that rarely gets reset, and it just makes workers feel like they're getting nowhere. On the topic of wages and responsibility, there is a huge gap between the positions. I've been offered to be a keyholder and even assistant manager many times and I have always refused. The added responsibility gets you a whole 30-40 extra cents. Not even a whole dollar more. It's ridiculous and I feel bad for every keyholder that gets pressured into the position. The managers make salary and by some accounts it's alright but still not fair for what the company and the district manager expect of them. District managers are even worse, they're trained to get the most effort out of people by yelling at them and making them scared. They will press the store managers into saying they'll write you up if even one thing on a giant list doesn't get done. This is the main reason why these stores have such a high turn over rate, people don't want to be disrespected and they quit. I've had multiple coworkers walk out only two months after dealing with the district manager. To customers, I am sorry that things such as our coupons and dot sales do not work at times, good stores will try and price override for you and make it right. But please don't blame the workers, we don't have anything to do with that side of it. For my coworkers, don't let the company tell you that it's your fault for the way the stores are. The constant staff changes make our managers have to retrain new people all the time and it's never enough time to avoid some mistakes. Stay strong.

Honestly I feel like if they don't want to hire regular full time staff they should at least hire some temp employees to come in and help put out as much product as possible until everything is caught up then once that's done they can go back to their usual staff. Makes more sense than only depending on 1-2 people to stock the entire store and also do everything else in addition.

I was at a Dollar General almost two years ago and the cashier there was a guy who told me he was working to supplement his income since he was a musician (played the saxophone). It was a day where I found a can of disinfectant and some toilet paper. He then told me how the day before, they only had one can of disinfectant left and two customers had gotten into a brawl over it, culminating in him having to call the police. He was ready to quit because of how this store was, similar to this one in the video, and the clientele that come in that act like spoiled children. We have to make a living, but working at a place with this stuff happening is not worth it.

It ain’t a joke, trucks upon trucks upon trucks and sometimes those trucks give you things you don’t need (because you’re overstocked on it). Example being we get a ton of white distilled vinegar, problem being that our home location is full and the sky shelves don’t look any less full. We also have a lot of it in the back because we just got too many, DG is crazy, also trying to have two people in the store doing the work of 4+ people is just unrealistic.

I just started working at a dg and I hate it already, the manager and other employees are really nice but I think the manager and assistant manager are too lenient with the other employees because they're good friends I guess, it seems they can get away with shit that was said not too do in the cbl training videos. One guy was sitting on crates right in front of the manager, the stock room and bathrooms are a disaster, bottom line is it's just so messy and really fucking cluttered, it's so understaffed, I worked until closing the other night and it was a mess, and I'm just thinking so are we going to clean up before we leave or what, even though I was tired. I even asked the assistant manager if I should at least clean up a little before we leave and she said no it's ok. It's also in a shitty area lots of tweakers come in there and steal shit and people that wreak of alcohol. The manager was also telling me that creepy people have come in there before and have touched other female employees inappropriately, and guys have also come in the store multiple times in one day to basically harass female employees, trying to friend them on Facebook and shit. And it scared the shit out of me when she told me this stuff. I have bad social anxiety so I talked to the manager about it she was understanding and said that her and the other employees will look out for me and try to help when I'm overwhelmed, she did say the one thing she was worried about was the creepy guys that can come in and could try to touch me or hit on me and make me uncomfortable. I'm thinking like oh thats fantastic, now I'm even more worried. And I don't feel safe working there, I don't think I should work somewhere where I feel unsafe, and have to worry about meth dealers, tweakers, and possible being sexually harassed. The only reason I'm going to try to keep working there is because I don't want to disappoint people in my life, my one friend says we'll every job is difficult, you just have to tough it out. Ya I understand every job is difficult when you first start out but I don't want to work at a place where I don't feel safe, and have to deal with being sexually harassed while I'm trying to do my fucking job. That seems perfectly reasonable to me but idk what's wrong with my friend she just doesn't seem to understand I just don't know what to do honesy it sucks.

I’ve never worked at DG but I just left the store today and the aisle are so narrow because there are carts of stuff in the aisle filled with boxes that haven’t been stocked! It’s not just one store but every DG I go to is over packed and there is only like 2 workers trying to do everything-stock and register. This isn’t right! As a customer I can’t even walk through the damn store... and it’s not the workers fault. They need to hire more people ASAP bc it’s not fair to the employees or customers f* corporate managers don’t care!

Well seeing as you have about 100 outs over your core stocking gap. Which is a minimum of 300 outs I'd get to stocking. You can also damage out all your expired food, as well as pet food. Sell by dates apply to all products s with on on them. It wouldn't be that hard. Had 45 roll trainers before Christmas and then January hit and we are back down to 6.
