Looking at the size of these things, it looks like it's begging for an Amiga laptop project (at least for the 1.1 version). The 1.8 with the PiStorm seems like the ultimate upgraded Amiga for those of us who made the mistake of letting our vintage hardware go back in the day.

Great video. My Minimig v1.2 has the PIC ARM replacement board and the piggy-backed extra RAM soldered to the existing chips (perfect for running WHDLoad of a large HDF image). The 1.8 seems to incorporate these as standard, but that CPU replacement board just blows me away. I still think it is a shame that nothing became of the FPGA Arcade as that allowed AGA on a slightly larger board (I have mine in a X500 case). The beauty of the early Minimig is that the board is so small you can put it inside a PC keyboard and make a very light and portable OCS/ECS machine.

Im surprised they bother with the 3.3v to 5v level shifter to drive a 68000, and just don't either integrate the Arm A7 directly or just have a pi socket removing the need for a pistorm and having that build right in. But the 1.8 is super cool regardless!

Currently havn't finished that ReAmiga due to the chip shortages. This was the main reason I ordered the A500 mini, and wanted something that looked like the Amiga even though it's alot smaller. This seems like they should make one without the level shifters and build in everything to plug in a Pi3, or PiZero2w upside down. Did anyone else notice the level shifters that get up to 5 volts only for the PiStorm to level shift them right back down. Also, I am guessing that FPGA they could fit whatever logic the CPLD from the PiStorm is doing. The other thing I don't understand is why the memory isn't in a single chip. Anyway, my current setup includes Amiga Forever 2006, but I really love Icaros and Amilator as well. With the price of MiSTer rising, and the basic instability and constant state of development of the V4 Stand Alone - this certainly has a strong appeal. Also, did you say it is running a genuine Motorola 68k cpu? You kind of rapid-fired the introduction and I didn't quite follow that. Of course, all the chip shortages that are affecting everything else will certainly have an impact on this. I tell people all the time, though - unless you have a particular nostalgia for the REAL hardware - an FPGA solution is the way to go - and if your sweet spot is the Amiga - this isn't a bad way to go at $150CA. I mean - lots of people are going to shell out about $130 for the Amiga 500 Mini - and this sounds like a far more authentic, cycle accurate, FPGA Amiga experience than the SoC running Colanto emulation on the Mini is going to deliver. But, I'm buying one of those too - because the more of these projects we support, the more we're going to see people making products for our market.

PS2 mouse and keyboard, why not a DE-9 socket? On a modern machine USB would be expected, but nope let's do USB- C and PS/2 combo lol :). I am guessing FPGA would be closer to the real thing than the WinUAE... Is this true?

Jesus wept! $63 shipping?! And that's the cheap option! For the top end $230 I'd expect french maid silver service with a happy ending! Their website is unclear what's included with the v1.8 board. Clearly the 68000 physical CPU is included in the v1.1 and v1.3 boards, but the v1.8 only mentions a cpu socket which SUPPORTS a physical CPU. Do they expect us to run an FPGA based CPU out of the box with the option of providing our own physical CPU or pistorm?

the 1.1 is basically a ECS A600w 2mb ram, the 1.8 is a 50mhz A2000 with a real 64pin 68000 socket, you can run all sorts of accelerators in like a TF530, vampire, pistorm, etc... WAY worth it. now its still being developed,. so we will get new features with new firmwares. for free!

Hey Chris, awesome vid as always! Very informative and funny as hell “cold shower, give her a tug” These Minimigs are very expensive now and they only take USD’s on the site.. Can you please do more setup vids, content, cores and games on the Minimig v1.1?

Yup $380 USD... Amiga RETRO tax in full effect as of Sept 2022. Everything is expensive now days. PISTORM? PiStorms are at least price controlled but RPi 3's are unobtanium unless you want to pay. A setup as shown in the video can hit about $600 or so by the time you're all done. Thankfully I got Rpi's before the price increases.

Not sure why they went for 4 mb only; wouldn't be better to add more memory at that point? Even to just run WHDLoad you need 3 MB on average I think. 8 MB would be sweet, but 4 is better than 2 :D So what is the advantage of this board versus a Pi? Beside being FPGA, is there any advantage of spend more for this board compared to the good old Pi4?
@ChrisEdwardsRestoration
2 жыл бұрын
i think that was the original limit, now that the rock star programmer Renee is on board the fpga code can be adapted, and upgraded. 8mb chip would be nice like winuae/pimiga does, it is nice to see something with a 68k socket... i dont know if any one is better than the other, its just nice to see and support new Amiga stuff. and i have an obsession so.....

@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Would love to see a socket-based 68K but sadly the only thing you can find around is the small SMD package type at best. Running it with the pistorm is really impressive; it is expensive but it is in the price range of the Vampire, or even cheaper; and this one look much better than the Vampire, even if it does not have all those bells and whistle (which are a waste anyway on an Amiga; but to each their own) Do you know if they have plans to make an expansion board for a real Amiga? or will it be a standalone as the previous versions?

Minimig 1.8 is amazing, im getting one
@wskinnyodden
2 жыл бұрын
That 1.8 is underwelming in 3 ways, number 1, no RAM slots (SO-DIMM, SIMM what ever, RAM slots are crucial, preferably two "types", so you can actually keep the hardware close to the original by separating CHIP and the rest of the RAM phisically), number 2, that outdated FPGA should be upgraded to a newer model with more resources available on it, mainly to futureproof the device and enable more hardware things to be implemented, such as SCSI controllers and maybe even the Zorro bus, which brings me to the third way, like every solution in these days (aside re-amiga) this does not have any BUS expansabilitiy possibilities, which limits the use cases. Let's say I'd want to run a Video Toaster or a re-implementation of such a device, none of these new solutions enable this unless you use the real hardware from back in the day, this is frustating and limits future possibilities that could result in the rebirth of this amazing architecture. This is frustrating!
