I can appreciate that you like the ‘Deluxe’ amps as I am one of those guys too... but Im really not sure the way that you set it up was conducive to getting the best out of it at all. I think you were absolutely right to say that the 10inch speaker is a real factor in the difference in sound between the two. But to me they both sounded pretty bad... I just think you might want to look into the mics and placement and the way you EQ them and of course the use of the volume control before writing it off... I played through a couple of the ‘hand wired 64’s 18 months ago and just couldn’t get a bad sound out of them.... For once I am really going to say I dont think the Fenders were the problem here. Think about it carefully, but I am a big believer in you absolutely should use what you want and if that is the 64 Deluxe Im happy with that but Im not sure the sounds you get are going to improve too much if you dont look at the ‘other factors’. I enjoy looking at the guitars you buy but I do find myself skipping the ‘sound demos’ you provide.

You'll want to set the bass pretty low with a humbucker, and not sure what input you used but input 2 gives more headroom. Edit: Listening to the individual demo section now. With Fender Blackface or Silverface amplifiers you need to have either the Bass and Treble higher than "4" for the preamp to start working. Looking at your settings I think that's why it wasn't waking up till +2 Volume. You had the Bass at 5 and Treble at 4, at those settings your preamp tone-stacks aren't hardly passing any signal to the output section.

Love your work, I agree with some comments in the comment section about doing a sweetwater thing to find you a great amp for your channel but just a word of advice, don't get sucked into sales hype of the point to point hand wired amps, if the components and amps are the same it will make no difference if it is on a PCB or if it's point to point, in fact most electronics manufacturers allow for a 10% variation in measurements with any component as it doesn't matter as much as you'd think. I did an advanced diploma at Chisholm institution Australia in electronic engineering, I want to build my own guitar FX pedals and vintage tube amps, all point to point hand wired mind you, not because they sound better but they sell for more money. true! the best amp I have ever had time with, and I have had time with a lot was the messa boogie road king 2x 12" combo open back. the options are endless. my favourite amps tend to have el34 power tubes, just my 2 cents.

@martincloud1323
3 жыл бұрын
Personally, for the sound demos, I think the best setup is to have two amps. First - a clean, Fendery kind of amp. This amp should have a lot of headroom, so the more watts, the better. That means it will break up later. Then you should have an amp for distorted sounds. In my opinion, nothing is better than a Marshall. If you want a combo, the DSL series is pretty nice. Or, from the high end, something like an Astoria.... Or you could go with the Marshall Studio Vintage or Studio Classic. Basically a Plexi or a JCM800, but less Watts. But don't go for a combo with these, they have 10'' speakers, that are too weak and thin. And then just probably experiment with mics, mic positions etc... Anyways, keep up with the great content, just wanted to help a little bit with the amps if you want... You are helping me with interesting guitars, so why not give you a little bit of a tip on amps :-D
@hkguitar1984

While I'm not much of a fan of a single 10" speaker I'd like to add that you need to back the guitar volume back a bit with the smaller amps. At the end of the day though you should be able to get great clean tones out of that new amp. Don't expect much clean tone out of any amp with the guitar cranked all the way up to 10. Just saying that has been my experience.

Give your princedom sometime I'm a long-time user user of an original 1965 Princeton reverb amp. First off they don't have a lot of Headroom only about 3 and 1/2 on the volume. But you can turn the treble and bass way up. Also you might want to consider breaking those tubes and speaker in by playing it for a while that's very important. Also they come with I'm not sure how good the tubes are on the hand-wired but usually a retube is needed the groove tubes are no good if that's what they put in it. Also you might want to pay attention to the speaker sometimes you can replace the factory speaker with a Neo which will give you more Headroom. The sound of it is creamier and more textured than the deluxe for sure if I were you I try to give it some more time and play with a little bit. Consult a good amp Tech that you trust. I hope my comments help enjoy the show great job trigly

I have a true 65 deluxe reverb ( not reissue) that isn't quite as good as the princeton but decent except that sometimes a tube or two will fall into the bottom. Plus I bought it used for $40 . When I bought my Telecaster around 2014 I test drove a reissue deluxe reverb. Two things struck me. It has a slightly different sound that I found wasn't as good as my 65. Also you couldn't shut off the reverb on the other channel. Well another thing was that it wasn't nearly as heavy as the original which I attribute to non tube circuitry. Not that its totally bad.

I used to have a princeton stereo on chorus red knob. Even though it was solid state, it sounded great. I could get most any tone I wanted and had chorus and reverb, with clean and distortion channels.

You may have some luck replacing the Jensen speaker in that Princeton with a Celestion Gold 10". They can get you a little more headroom while maintaining that Fender sparkle and twang.

16:52 What kind of deal with Fender doesn't work out anymore? Didn't know you had an arrangement with them, especially since it seemed like you've bought most of the Fenders yourself.

I just posted the same idea. There are no honest reviews that I know of, just sales. Not that it's not entertaining,but Austin's opinions are bought and paid for and about as worth as much as an asshat . I'd assume most people expect this, he's a guitar salesman. Used to be a used guitar salesman., ;) Probably used cars before that. ( just kidding obviously, but it feels the same)

@@guitarocd9984 LOL, true. Most the time my guitar volume is rolled back between 4 and 6. It surprises me how many young players just keep the guitar volume at 10 all the time. Strat or Les Paul into my Marshall cranked the guitars never go about 8, maybe 9 if I'm feeling froggy!

The lower watt Fender amps are great for Stratocasters but tend to get buried with hotter humbuckers, especially with a 10 inch speaker.

You should find an old 60’s Kalamazoo Gibson GA-35 RVT in great condition. I had one when I was a teenager but it needed restored. Besides the pops hisses and buzzing every now and then, it sounded amazing! Still by far the best reverb I’ve ever heard.

Maybe consider checking out those cream blackstar tube combo’s. They have a ton of headroom, beautiful reverb, and a separate overdrive channel. Something to think about 👍

@troglys guitar show if you want a good amp that also has built in reverb go with a Fender mustang amp or Fender mustang micro now me personally I find myself using a fender mustang V2 it's all right like yeah I like it but I feel like sometimes some of the others from that line of Amps a good but there's also Line 6 Amps there's this one that I like it's kinda cheap for an amp like $200-300 but IDK the model what I do know about it is that I really like it a lot

I have the 68 Princeton Reverb and a les paul is quite muddy through the 10” speaker. When I run it through a 2x12 cab it seems to respond very differently. Overall I like the amp but I’ve been considering the deluxe reverb for a little more headroom.

I think your mic placement needs sorting pal. It's picking up too much buzz, which usually means it's too close to your speaker, making it hard for us to ascertain how good it might sound in your studio. Mic placement is a bitch to get right for recording. Hand wired amps are snake oil sales imho. Get an Orange, any model pretty much but the Rockerverb's are pretty damn good & you're golden. I'd take the 'Pepsi challenge' against anything with my old OR120.

I loved the pictures of those Smokehouse ones...But seeing this one I am oh my lord that is such a BEAUTIFUL guitar. And if I didn't have my 2014 Traditional in Honeyburst I would buy this...But yeah can't do it. AS with the Amps...look into Bogner. I have a Shiva 20th Anniversary combo and love it, there is 2 versions of the Shiva combo, with a few different tubes that can be had.

Big manufacturers still want to use rosewood fretboard but today you can't find a decent piece of rosewood!! It's always not enough dark for rosewood, I mean the color difference between indian laurel and rosewood are too subtle to pay for that...

I hear ya Trogly, amps are season to taste..I got a Princeton myself, but I did not like it either..it wasn't for me. I recently got a Fender Deluxe Reverb and I'm still getting use to the tone of that amp..and on that note I've stepped away from buying/ collecting guitars (I have my Gibsons) and I lately have been focused on Amps. A good amp can change your guitar's tone dramatically, it can really make your guitar feel like it's come alive as well as change your playing technique. So keep searching for your amp that suits your needs... you'll find it.
