At last! I've been waiting for a feature like this for years

yep me too. I was using an add-on called Draw Xray, but it wasn't working in Blender 4.0 and as I was figuring out why, I came across that retopo feature.

I know draw xray, I also used it, but it annoyed me that when using "grid fill" it crashed every time in every version of blender. Also, huge respect for the creators for these functions! And to you for showing this! :)@@jmundart

I wish that worked for me. What other settings do you need to enable or disable in addition to retopology in order to make this work? I'm using 4.0, and clicking retopology alone doesn't do anything to hide those backfaces. It just makes the mesh blue and somewhat transparent - the distracting backfaces are still there.

I do mess around with the slider but at its default it does work so I don't change it often. Make sure the mesh you are snapping to is visible, when you go to isolation mode using the / key it does turn transparent. Other setting I use is, snapping with face projection turned on and I also use the shrinkwrap modifier.

Also make sure in the, Properties panel > Object > Viewport Display - In Front is not checked. Maybe that could be the issue

Yes, yes... I was turning on "Face" under "Snap To" because that sounded like what online tutorials were saying (but using previous Blender iterations). That made things act goofy. Using "Face Project" or even "Face Nearest" under "Snap Individual Elements To" makes everything work as expected, as far as I can tell. ...Thanks!@@jmundart
