This might sound overly philosophical but I think sometimes pets make us so emotional because they’re a constant reminder of our capacity to love. There’s a particular intimacy in taking care of someone or something else’s basic needs. It’s a responsibility but also a privilege to learn about the self-sacrifice and patience required of you to take care of another living thing. It makes us better humans to love something else unconditionally literally whether it is a partner or a cat or a little tomato plant. Your emotion seems like overwhelming gratitude to me. Thank you for sharing it with us ❤️

Our cat was our "pandemic baby" and he had separation anxiety so bad we had to get another kitten (not to replace him, we now have 2 cats, Poncho and Pooh Bear) but it helps if you put a blanket or shirt that smells like you and your partner in his space or even sprinkle a few treats and toys around in a smaller space. He is sooo cute btw ❤️

My son got a kitten that had bad separation anxiety. Two kittens are hard work and expensive but it was the best thing for him to get another "baby" to go with his first one. They love each other so much! I will even take both to the vet even if only 1 has to be seen just because they comfort each other so much on the ride there.

Calcifer is ADORABLE! Agree with Emily's advice - kittens are used to having a litter, so they are very cuddly and clingy. Your scent makes a big difference, as does having a fellow kitten to play with. When we got our first kitten, she needed so much attention that our vet suggested getting her a friend - that was one of the best decisions we could have made (your mileage may vary; only do it if you're up to having a pair). Of course, that started a trend, and we have 5 now, but you don't have to be like us. :) I can see from how you interact with him in videos that you have great cat mom instincts (such as patiently moving him away from where he shouldn't be). He's a lucky little guy!

I agree, two cats make for happier kitties. My situation was different. With travel time to/from work, I was gone at least 10-11 hours a day. Getting my second kitty made my first kitty practically stress-free. Except for thunderstorms with a lot of high winds. He turned into a yowling nightmare when high-winds happened. 🤷🏼♀️

top tip for new kitty parents, especially indoor cats is start playing and touching their paws as much as possible both front and back so they get used to it. This helps when it comes to cutting their claws (just the tips - it doesn't hurt and is needed otherwise they get overgrown) if you start it now less likely to get mauled later on lol.

Hi Emma! My sister and I adopted a stray cat during the second lockdown last year and if I think about her too long I get very emotional too. She makes me sooo happy and I want her to be safe and happy and loved always. I think having a pet to take care of is an undescribable feeling because they depend on you a lot so you just want them to be okay at all times and while that is amazing it's also a big responsibility. I have to remind myself that she's as safe as she can be right now and that I will try to keep her that way for as long as I can. Cats are so beautiful and smart and loving; Calcifer is very lucky he got such a lovely human to be his mum

I used to have a cat named Gumby and he wasn’t my first cat but he was my first cat that would be truly mine and I was only allowed to have it because it was my birthday. My mom didn’t really like cats so we had to keep him outside and he was doing fine until he wasn’t. One day I found him outside and to his side he was bleeding and you could see something bit him. I sat down and started crying next to him immediately because I thought about losing him and all he did was be there for me and it made me less sad. I tried my best to take care of him the next few days. I was around 12 when this happened and I can say the feelings you were feeling at the moment were the ones I was feeling then and it’s terrible but incredible to care so much for such a wonderful creature like a cat. Especially ones that don’t mind your presence.

Hi Emmie... I'm a huuuge reader too and been following you about a year or so. I am also a practicing Herbalist and over time I have found that physical symptoms very often have emotional roots, and as I was listening to you talk about Ozzie it occurred to me that the acne is literally things coming up from the depths and being processed and excreted by your body... I also thought about how you just came back from BC... clean air and a break from the rigid demands of an ordered life (part and parcel of "normal" life in the modernized West)... there is a component of grief to coming back to regularized life patterna from such a glorious trip like the one you just took. I guess my point is to do what you need to do physically and to keep following the emotional trail of discovery (about your inner workings) wherever it leads-- I think your instincts are right on!. So much love for you and your path in life... I absorb so much of that Way from your vids. 🧡💛💜💚💙❤

I love you Emma, your videos are the best part of my day as sad as that sounds. I'm also in love with my cat and it's kinda hard to see her and know that she might not be there after a few years. What really helps me with those thoughts it's just to think: every single moment I have present with you, I'm gonna fully enjoy and be fully aware of you. You can't control how they go, but you can control the time you have with them, so making her the most free and the cat with the most love in the world is my priority. Anyways, love you emmie thanks for your videos and I wish I could give you as much happiness as you give me. For now, I have to content with leaving you comments that you'll never read and be a shapeless number that you'll never know.

I've finished 3 more books recently (which is a lot for me lol - 7 books this year now, aiming for 15). Those books were The Temple of the Golden Pavilion (5 stars), Gyo (4 stars), and Mrs. Dalloway (5 stars, instant favourite). And now I've started reading Battle Royale and I'm really liking it. Also, I love Calcifer! He reminds me of my cats when we first got them, they were so hyper all the time. But yeah, getting back into reading after an almost month and a half of not doing it has been fantastic.

Pandemic puppy over here- there are great resources on positive reinforcement training for separation anxiety in dogs that worked for us, I wonder if any of those would work with kittens? It’s like, where you “practice” leaving and then wait outside and come back and give treats/rewards for calm behaviors. I’m 100% clueless about training cats and kittens though 😬

I've been here since the last year, I was such a baby reader of classics basically birthed by Emma's passion for classics and literature in general, and I am a toddler reader now lol. I, too, discovered and developed a passion with literature thanks to this channel--- I am a toddler reader, since I am not yet literate enough to fully grasp the canon, but for the past year, I improved a lot in many things big and small; my writing is more well expressed now, and it is a big deal since English is not a native language of mine. I also improved my analytical skills and idea development and just expression in general that really helped me with stuff, and I am really grateful that I have randomly stumbled upon this channel a year ago and seeing how this channel now continues to grow and expand to people that may or may not also a soon to be a passionate human being to words written in paper that continues to influence culture. (sorry for the ramble lol this is just an appreciation or my love letter to this channel and to Emma and how her vlogs and reading helped my silly little gay self wander through silly little books and completely enjoys it)

I came back from a country where stray cats were everywhere and they are very resourceful. Dogs are kinda of dumb, I don't think they'd survive alone very long. If you leave while he's sleeping and he wakes up with you guys not being there, it freaks him out even more cause he thinks you're gone for good. train him to know that when you leave, you're coming back, don't say goodbye or make a fuzz about leaving either. Trust me is it way worse if you leave without him knowing. Idk about cats but if he can get that upset about you leaving, it may work to leave for very shorts periods of time (with him noticing you doing so) and coming back, in that way he'll learn that it's okay and that you're to abandoning him :)

Calcifer is a baby, he has lost his Mum and his siblings and everything he knew. He is in a strange place that he doesn't know with people he doesn't know. You and your partner are his family, when you leave he's on his own. He's tiny and he doesn't know much about the world yet. It's understandable that he's scared to be alone. He doesn't know that you're coming back. He will learn this in time but it's very early days. As he settles in, learns more about you and your routine he should start to feel more secure and with your love, patience and care feel more confident and able to trust in you. I agree with others about leaving a piece of your worn clothing for him when you leave. Also that a feline companion would be good, a litter mate from his own litter would have been ideal but only if you're able to afford it, not just now but when they're older. Some cats reach the end of their lives in good health but many get chronic conditions like hyperthyroidism which requires long term meds (or treatment with radioactive iodine), need dental work (often extensive), or echocardiograms of the heart etc, all of which is very costly. Pet insurance is essential if you don't already have it, it gives peace of mind. Calcifer is a lucky little chap, he has loving, committed humans who will care for him for the rest of his life, not all cats and kittens have that. ❤

Hear The Wind Sing & Pinball follow the same nameless character as from Dance Dance Dance & A Wild Sheep Chase. might be worth revisiting them with the added context - loving the new vids, congrats on 300k 0:)

When leaving the house, DO NOT leave when he is asleep, if a baby it's sleeping in their bed and wakes up to find himself alone, is not easier, it is only terrifying. The same applies for cats. So, please, before going out, actually talk to him and tell him you'll come back a few hours later, the animals actually understand and appreciate this, and later on he will be less scared to be left alone, because he'll know you're gonna come back to him. I hope I helped somehow! Love you and your little baby kitty!

Virtual hugs to you! When you have unrequited desires as a child, they will surface when you become an adult, for better or worse, they'll get their day in the sun. It's never too late to have your own feline friend.

2:06 Ohhh, a friend of mine had this with her dog where it would just go crazy if she left the room, so she started doing this thing where she'd make a show of leaving the room but then return immediately multiple times and eventually the dog learnt to be more calm - don't know if the same might apply to cats as well? 18:21 I was recommended sudocrem back in school and it's been my go-to ever since
