Technical apparel in the leisure industry is going through a revolution. With increasing knowledge and awareness of the environmental damage caused by ‘forever chemicals’, brands are moving into a bold new era of green technical materials.
Of the old school technical fabrics, Gore-Tex ShakedryTM was renowned as one of the most innovative, while Castelli was one of the first partner companies to be granted access to this wonder material. The brand put it to good use in the Idro Jacket. This became one of the most sought-after products in the peloton and is still regularly seen on riders no longer sponsored by Castelli.
Now, though, Gore has pledged to remove all PFC products from its fabric range by 2025, with 85% having already been discontinued and replaced by PFC-free fabrics. Shakedry™ bears a PFC membrane, so it’s one of the fabrics which has now stopped being made.
Luckily, alternative fabrics are rapidly being developed to withstand the punishment of our inclement weather systems, in the process resetting the bar by which waterproof jackets are measured. And so, the Tempesta Lite Jacket enters the market.
New from Castelli for SS23, this packable jacket uses PFC-free Gore-Tex Active material to achieve class leading waterproofing and breathability, while its lower back uses Gore-Tex Topo stretch fabric for a close fit.
The use of the latter material ensures that, if you have lots of items in your jersey pockets, the jacket will expand to accommodate them, rather than growing taught and becoming restrictive around the shoulders the way other jackets can do. An additional benefit of including stretch fabric is that it makes the jacket more flexible, allowing it to fit a wider variety of body shapes.
The Tempesta Lite’s cut and finish has been refined to promote rider comfort in rainy conditions. A ‘laser cut’ collar sits flush against the skin to prevent cold air or rain from progressing down the neck, whilst an extended drop tail fends off road spray, even when you adopt aggressive riding positions for prolonged periods.
Internal wrist gaiters will integrate with your gloves to create a seal between your skin, gloves and jacket, a feature that will keep you comfortable on cold, wet days and be especially appreciated in the colder months. Meanwhile, a waterproof YKK® Vislon® zipper will help to seal out even the worst driving rain, finishing off a jacket designed to keep you dry, whatever the weather.
The Tempesta Lite is Castelli’s current pro-level waterproof rain jacket. With its new fabrics, neat features and green credentials, it solidifies Castelli’s reputation as a cutting-edge foul weather clothing specialist.
