There definitely was a battle back in the day between ST and Amiga users. I got my Amiga in 89 (batman pack) and the ST was already established. I had friends who had both machines. And although i respected the ST you could see that even with ports, the amigas superior sound was being utilised, and graphical tweets were added. Then when the full use of the amiga were starting to be used the inevitable comparisons would start. The only come back ST owners would have is "yeah but it has midi" which a lot of them didnt even know what it was let alone use it. The fact is, these machines were bought for games and the amiga was better at them. But its worth remembering, the ST was always a cheaper more affordable machine. But the battles in my circles went from 89 to about 92. Funnily enough my ST friends were around my house to play games more than i was around theirs. Says it all really.

Don't forget that the ST's 68000 CPU was clocked a bit higher, meaning that it was generally a bit quicker with 3D polygonal games - such as Frontier Elite. However the difference was marginal at best.

ST was not bought for gaming only nearly as often as Amiga. Especially in Germany it was seen more as a computer for small business, an alternative to Macintosh. Besides things like Cubase, Desktop Publishing was a big thing on the Atari thanks to Mega ST line, a dedicated laser printer and professional software like Calamus. There were hundreds of professional quality apps available for the ST ranging from managing a gym customers to CAD, 3D modelling to rather expensive research analysis software for engineers.

Fellow Australian here. I have never owned or used a Spectrum in my life, but I have ordered The Spectrum because I want to try it out, I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival and I'm excited about the full size Amiga product that RGL are developing, even though, again, I've had very little experience with the Amiga. I have used what I think was an A500 in the early 90s, but I don't remember very much about it.

In 1985 Commodore was concentrating their sales effort for the Amiga on large corporations. The were not marketing it as a game/home machine. They thought they could compete with the PC in the same market. I worked in a major international bank IT department then and we had a few pre-launch Amigas lent to us for assessment. We played with them a bit but continued forward with PCs as we had already a large investment in software by then.

babylon 5 was produced using amiga for video editing and special effects. Disney used them for various theme park visuals, even as long as a decade after they went out of business. Atari ST owners seem to be obsessed with Amiga sales much more than Amiga owners. Is it perhaps because Atari fans know that the Amiga is a true descendant of the Atari lineage and the ST was a list-minute rush job when Tramiel lost the Amiga to Commodore and Tramiel (and Atari fanboys) never got over it? They're maybe insecure that the ST is an Atari-in-name-only. The direct Atari hardware lineage goes Atari VCS->Atari 8-bit->Amiga->Lynx->3DO (sorry Jaguar)
@Nebulous6
11 күн бұрын
That and Atari was already privy to the Amiga's chipset specs, graphics modes, and theory of operation prior to the Atari ST beginning development. Those who say that Tramiel didn't know about this since it was prior to his acquisition of Atari may have missed the part where Tramiel's son presented him with the file on the loan details from Atari to Amiga. Certainly with that loan agreement would be the reasons for the loan and the documents for the intended 68000-based Atari home computer project based on the Amiga chipset (complete with details of the Amiga-Atari meetings in which the Amiga dev team explained the inner workings of the Amiga hardware to the engineers at Atari). That neatly leads into the rush job that you mentioned (since Atari suddenly no longer had access to the Amiga chipset).

The key on the Spectrum, like with the ZX81 and Atari 400 were never as bad back in the day as people say now retrospectively. You could code quite quickly on Sinclair keyboards because of the keyword shortcuts. Of course with TheSpectrum, you will probably be able to plug in a USB keyboard if you like.

Speaking as an American, the ST here outsold the Amiga until the 500 came out. The ST sales fade was slow. About a third of the ones I came across in person (so not counting buying online) were STEs which didn't come out till 1989. The Amiga didn't start getting better looking games than the ST till about a year after the 500 came out, and that pushed Amiga sales far past ST sales. The Amiga sales fade was fast here. VGA graphics on the PC started to become common in 1990, and that is what killed both the ST and the Amiga. By the time the 1200 came out the Amiga market in the US was almost dead. Of the Amigas I have come across at least 80% were 500s, 10% were 2000s, and the rest was all other models. In a perfect world the Atari and Commodore would have looked at the 1987 release of VGA on PC and Mac, and realized that they needed to compete.

There's no technical reason why a flashcart for the 2600+ & 7800+ can't be produced that has a menu but presents the selected game image as a single ROM. The principle is the same as Slot-2 flash carts that allow the Nintendo DS to play Gameboy Advance games natively.

@@ThisWeekinRetro The CPU must signal the cartridge's ROM chip over the address and chip enable lines and receive data back over the data lines. @terrylaze6247

The 1980s lead platform being the Atari ST in a lot of cases caused nothing but worse games other than a few early 3D games where the slightly faster 68000 clock made a difference. Having played a lot of my childhood ST games on the Amiga recently, I'd rather not remember the ST sound. Maybe that is rewriting my personal gaming history. I guess without the ST the 16-bit market would have been too small to support ANY software development in the 1980s so we should be thankful! Team17 were coming!

A cheep way to get homebrew on an ATARI 2600+ is to buy a "32 in 1 game cartridge" which works fine, and do the mod to take an Eprom that will switch between 16 4K games. Not exactly a FlashCard solution, but if you use an Eprom that can be erased it is a sort-of swappable solution.

Spectacular find on the Amiga 4000T. Because there are multiple SCSI drives in there, I suspect it was indeed a non-linear editing machine. Interleaved SCSI drives were a technique of increasing the frame-rate. Even without the RTG card you can now run cool stuff like this on there: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2KOZtYx_pGuHqoI As for the ST vs Amiga, to be fair, Tremiel locked them down in court long enough to release the ST first. The Amiga hardware was already demoed at the summer 1984 CES. Ironically, the Amiga's essentially an amped-up Atari 800, so.... I recommend checking out every interview and talk by Joe Decuir to uncover more of the truth regarding the Amiga's history.

An Amiga sounds more interesting - but the market ? Are secondhand Amiga 500 expensive ? (£150 working seems a ballpark figure.) The Amiga needs a lot more memory than a stock A500 had. Having games run without faffing around would be cool. Hopefully it would have acceleration options and other popular upgrades.
